Muschamp would be a good hire...and if Kirby Smart had left for a HC job, Muschamp would be the first guy I'd want as DC. As a Bama fan, I'm not excited 'bout the possibility of Muschamp coming to AU...but then again, I wasn't excited to see y'all get Ellis Johnson a couple of years ago either...

The bigger question is, if hired, how long will Muschamp be there and does he have the personnel there to run his defense? While Johnson wasn't a good head coach, he still knew defense and he didn't become stupid all of a sudden. While I can see why he was let go, 2 years isn't a lot of time to install your defense with most players recruited by the previous DC (who ran a different scheme)...

I think Muschamp would be the best hire AU could make right now...and even if he isn't there long, he'd have the D playing more aggressive while he was and he'd have an instant impact on recruiting...

I would be thrilled if he stuck around three years.

I would be lying if I said I would not be sad if we don't get him at this point.

How did Muschamp all the sudden become the end all of defensive coaches? Multiple programs are giving him savior status. I see a good coach, but not some incredible guru he's being made out to be.

Because he has had good defenses everywhere he has been for years. His recruiting impact will be huge and from an AU perspective he brings an intensity and passion that Auburn has not had on the defensive side of the ball since he left in 207.

It has been so long since I was excited about any Auburn defense.

Yes he would. But even more important would be who he can get on his staff. Position coaches are just as important as Coord are. Thus the part of Feldman's tweet about staff issues. If Florida can keep Durkin and Robinson, Muschamp's hiring will not have as much luster to it.

I thought Van Gorder was pretty intense.

FYI: 1 play < Multiple plays

Which is what the poster you "attempted" to disprove said. Thanks for playing along however!

Gus has put up enough O plays on saban to fill a 90 minute documentary. Does that make saban/smart bad D coaches? What was it......298 yards rushing last year and 456 yards passing this year?

At this point the mark of a good defense (against elite offenses) is getting stops in the red zone and basically holding momentum for a quarter or two while your offense goes on a run. I honestly thought top 5-10 type, elite defenses would be able to hold out but at this point I just don't think it is possible. Not against schemes with QB's who can run and throw and are in schemes that present that option every play. Add in receivers that are hard to guard one and one (and forced to be guarded that way due to the QB/RB/Option run threat), and you have to have a once in lifetime defensive talent structure with great CBs and fast DL and LBs to contain it. Tough.

It really is basketball on grass.

Meh. I don't know. It is always changing.

Arkansas seems to be on the right track and I think they are like cricket on grass (as in it takes five days to finish a game)

At Auburn, it's about getting a DC that can make stops happen, period. Our D was gashed game after game. Auburn is not lacking in talent to that extent. There were holes in Johnson's D that were painfully obvious. People talk about Gus running a gimmicky O. The truth is, Ellis Johnson runs a gimmicky D.
