I'm not from Mississippi and I knew who he was in high school. He's generally brought up when school integration is taught along with Little Rock.

I'm wrong here, I can see how the leader of the school could take away the song bc the perception is the stadium is chanting it.

This is what you should have posted when I gave you the chance to amend your previous assertion...

Really, I don't think your average Joe from Connecticut or New York cares about something that happened in Mississippi 50 years ago. I live in Mississippi, and the only time I hear about it are in history classes and in articles I read from Ole Miss faculty and students.

You living in MS really skews your perspective. It's kind of like your in a vacuum. But, I'm all for UM playing Dixie with a TSWRA flourish.

Most people look at MS as racist like people look at San Francisco as all gay/lesbian. It's not completely true but an argument can be made.

what is it that you study (I can guess and thought that would be a good job during these times ... nvm jk) but seriously?

Since we all know what school I'm from, I don't want to burn any bridges by getting too specific. I'll just say that the field itself is lucrative, but again, the courses in no way prepare me for a job in my field.

Though some majors do a good job of preparing students for careers, I would say some are horrible; and in nearly every case, if you cut the BS classes, the students could all graduate in half the time owing the government much less money.

And there are kernels of truth to each stereotype.

I know several people from out of state, and the topic of racism rarely comes up. What I catch a lot of crap about is our low quality of education, obesity rate, poverty level, and religious beliefs.

Then you never got to know Ole Miss. We aren't ashamed of ourselves. We're ashamed that a few jackasses were allowed to do something so shitty 60 years ago.

I'm not ashamed of a single, solitary thing about OM in 2012. Well, maybe basketball. But that's it.

People nationally probably don't even have any idea who James Meredith is, and if they do, it's only because Ole Miss constantly brings it up.

You'd be surprised.

Get out of Mississippi more and ask people what they think and "know" about Mississippi. You'd see why these perceptions are important if you did.

I don't know about the students, but the school itself seems pretty ashamed. Ole Miss has spent years destroying longstanding traditions out of fear of a negative image.

Your band can no longer play Dixie

Your band can no longer play From Dixie with Love

Fans can no longer bring rebel flags to football games

You replaced iconic Colonel Reb with the most generic mascot on earth.

How is saying the South Will Rise Again racist?

Was not the south destroyed after the Civil War? Did it not rise again despite the best efforts of the north? I never thought that phrase had anything to do with race. It was just an expression of pride, but I guess it is now racist.

Oh well,it seems that everyone must bow to the ignorance of the masses.

Sure would help with keeping people in the stands. Don't think i'm the only person that used to really look forward to this.

Also, that nose cave stuff sounds like it's coming from a really, really cool guy..

Actually we still play it 3-4 times a game.

No. Statistically the bulldog is the most generic mascot on earth.

I didn't realize how bad parking was until I lived off campus.

I remedied the situation by parking on campus early in the morning and just hanging out all day, like 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM.

Since I was writing a thesis for the Honors College, I had to be on campus constantly anyway so it actually worked out. Still, getting on campus during lunch time, for example, is terrible.

Do you think I find a Bulldog to be a unique mascot? No. Neither is the Tiger, which is a mascot now shared by 3 SEC schools. Colonel Reb was something to be proud of though.

In a vacuum or in a different context, you're right.

Problem is that the chant is one of the mottos of the Klan. That ruins everything.

Well that's not how it's used by, again, the Klan or the post war Dixiecrats.
