Auburn said the decision to save the major was Boosinger’s and that the provost changed his mind because the new dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Joseph Aistrup, asked to keep public administration open.
In an interview Wednesday, Aistrup said he felt it was important to preserve a pre-professional program with at least 100 majors. He said he decided to try to improve the program by giving it more resources. “I didn’t know there was a single student-athlete in the program,” he said. “It was not even on my radar screen.”

From a 2007 al.com ARTICLE that highlights the issue everywhere.
The class was easy enough for Ahmad Childress, then a University of Alabama football player: Write about football. For three credits one summer, Childress said, he and five teammates composed an entire football class that required only instructing a football camp for kids in Gulf Shores and writing a four-page essay.
"That was the whole class. I got an A," Childress said. "Yeah, it was a little weird, but sometimes you've got to do what you've got to do to be eligible."

This happens at every school.

"It's a safe home for athletes to be eligible for football and other sports, too," said Childress, the former Alabama defensive tackle who was a general studies major. "You really don't do too much work. You're basically taking notes in class."
Childress said he was made aware of HES general studies by advisers in the athletics department.
After going on academic probation when his grade-point average fell to 1.7, Childress said he used easy general studies courses and electives to increase his mark to the 2.5 the university said he needed to play.

Great efforts have been made to save small, unpopular academic majors at Auburn and other universities. Example being Aviation Management. It was also on the chopping block at Auburn, and it was saved,
Thank God for that. Baggage does not load itself on planes people
Majority of Aviation Management Majors end up as Airline Pilots or Military Pilots. At one time it was under the School of Engineering and was one of the most successful aviation programs in the Country. Second only to Purdue.

Auburn started testing for synthetic marijuana -- more commonly called "spice" -- on Jan. 27, 2011, three days after the testing company the school uses made the test available, according to Jacobs' statement At the time, spice was legal in the state of Alabama and was not banned by the NCAA. The state of Alabama banned spice in October of 2011, and the NCAA added it to its banned list in August of 2011, although the NCAA did not implement testing for the drug until December of 2012.

Nice job on the spelling and the topical article

So...should I be worried? Are any of my friends in Auburn (I'm not this semester, sadly) in trouble? It sounds like the plains might be burning again. Or is that burning smell of idiots trying way to hard to rub their only 2 brain cells together to produce intelligent thought?
My God, people, if you all think this is some big indictment of Auburn, please remove your head from your arse. In all of athletics, every university has the skate-by major for athletes. I'm sure even Vandy has one. Vandy's SB nation had an article and discussion about this which basically came down to laughing about the different easy As have been in place down the years. Is it a problem? Absolutely, but it's damn sure not one to start throwing stones at Auburn over.

Hey, I'm just trying to stay on topic, much like the AU fans who decided to deflect the story towards Alabama

Why are you deflecting about your spelling?

LSU's "public administration" route is sports administration, which makes me cringe when friends that aren't athletes tell me they're in sports admin

Not really.
Let that sink in.

Many large schools do. Surprised it was on the chopping block.
