The author makes it sound like Jay Jacobs got in the ear of Provost Boosinger and offered to subsidize the program which resulted in over turning the poli-sci faculty's vote to remove the major.

Correct and he goes on another tangent rather than the one right in front of him. They offered to subsidize the program, so one would assume that it was a financial reason for the cut, not an academic(which is where the author goes). Is it so much of an issue that the AD provides money for curriculum? Courses that are valid, yet not profitable enough to be sustainable without other revenue streams.

“If the public administration program is eliminated, the [graduation success rate] numbers for our student-athletes will likely decline,” a December 2012 internal athletic department memo said. Wow.

Major Universities have program tracks for athletes...who'd a thunk such a thing. Maybe we should start checking into a General Studies major? Oh yea, and no matter a chosen major all students have the same core curriculum.

Yeah, and why are your faculy & staff willingly participating in interviews and leaking internal office memo's, emails, and the voting results of the academic departments to the WSJ?

Why were internal athletic department memos shared with outsiders?

I love the hypocrisy in this thread. Like the rest of y'all's clown colleges are producing rocket scientist out of your football teams.

Yeah. That's the only part that is iffy on the whole article. It's really a non-story, but that quote doesn't sound awesome. Again, not bad, but that quote sounds like the rationale is about keeping grad success rate up and not on best education possible. NBD. Happens at a lot of places.

Yea, anyone who has been on campus at the colleges with Major programs in sports understand the academic side of things can be jealous at times. Not everyone working at Auburn has Auburn's best interest at heart.

AU needs to police themselves a little better. Auburns's willingness to throw their own university under scrutiny and leak private inter-office information to just any ole hack journalist is ridiculous.

How far-reaching does that go though? Memo's within the athletic dept and inter-office emails, information about meetings with the provost and directors, etc. shouldn't be leaked to the public when it negatively impacts AU academics.
