May have been self imposed to get ahead of the NCAA looking at real estate in knoxville after the Kiffin/Pearl eras, but there was some other probation things like less recruiting hours or something.

Iirc we were 2 schollys down (to 23) for a couple of Dooleys years. Which made it difficult for him to fill the cupboards after he had to break the news to players kiffins "promises" won't be kept. Dooley didn't have the liberty of 30+ scholarships to offer like Jones walked into.

Like Dooley or not the guy took on the biggest part of the mess that the Hamilton/Fulmer/Kiffin fiasco left behind. I will always think that the Dooley Era was more about fixing/stabalizing UTAD as a whole than just UT Football. Jones just has had to focus on UT Football thanks to Dooley being the stop gap.

Teaching young men proper etiquette is an issue that a HC may have to handle. Shows how bad it was.

Imo Dooley did better than most give credit when it comes to development. Better than Jones has. Ie Dooley handed Jones one of the top OLs in the country with NFL talent across the board. Jones made them look like absolute crap. People like you blamed it on Dooley, and players for being overrated instead of seeing it as a Player Development issue on Jones end. Now we are seeing Jones lack of player dev.

Honestly we aren't going to get anywhere as your Dooley hate clouds your memory of some of the solid games that UT was in. They kept them pretty close back then, and not giving them away like Jones does.

Majors props as a player did not extend to him being a coach at Tennessee. I was an undergrad 78-81. The worst record in 75 years came under Majors. 4-7.

I would expect a old person like you to know that was Johnny's first year at Tennessee after he inherited a dumpster fire as bad or worse than what Dooley left. Bill Battle undermined everything Dickey had done to turn the program around in the late 60's and drove it off a cliff by 1976.

Once Fulmer replaced Majors the program immediately began to show great improvement.

You're aware Majors went a combined 29-6 in his last three full seasons as head coach, right? Probably not but I thought you should know.

I never liked Johnny Majors. He never showed me much.

And yet you LOVED this robotic, cliche regurgitating red faced cuck we are currently stuck with and continued making excuses for him until the Vanderbilt game while the rest of us on the VOLS board lol'd at you.

Majors also just disappeared for what, 20 years? Fulmer did much more for UT than Majors did. He should get more recognition.

He does. Fulmer won a national championship and walked into a very good situation due to what Johnny Majors left him.

Nope. It only felt that way because he didn't recruit offensive linemen and he had a ton of attrition after his first year.

Hell, Aaron fricking Douglas could have been an All American, but Dooley made him quit, then he transferred to Alabama, and then killed himself.

Aaron fricking loved Tennessee, LOVED IT.

When Kiffin announced that he was leaving to the team, Aaron stood up and said

"Go win your fricking championships at USC then, bitch", and walked out, followed by Eric Berry.

Dooley broke that kid, I'll never forgive him for it.

Aaron Douglas was always going to frick his life up, tossing Dooleys name into that is a little weird lol. Kid got caught several times in HS with pills and weed, but Quarles just swept it under the rug

The reason I'm asking is because while I could maybe see Aaron Douglass doing that, I didn't think Berry was as angry. I can't remember for sure, though.

Then why was he fired? The spark plug for that success was - Phil Fulmer.

The program didn't as well as it -should have- under Majors. I thought that "in the moment" and once he was gone, things got better.

Why not? Now, since he clearly is not much of a game day coach, he needs to go. But he will probably win 8 or 9 games a year indefinitely.

Johnny Majors had success because of Phil Fulmer. That is what people saw and that is why Majors was bought out and sent on his way.

He didn't say anything in the meeting, just walked out. He was pissed, but he didn't curse anyone out or anything like that. He's got more control of his emotions than most.

Derek Dooley had a better first year than Majors did. Majors still holds the dubious distinction of the worst record since 1924.

You can call Majors "Mr. Tennessee Football" all you like but he hung around way after his welcome was worn out. I'd move that mantle to Al Wilson any way.

Majors had quadruple bypass surgery in August and was back on the sideline 26 days later because it was clear the team did not reach its potential under him -- but it DID under Phil Fulmer. Majors promptly lost to Arkansas, Bammer and USCe.

And was FINALLY he was sent on his way, thank God.
