How close was Dooley to being fired after the UK loss? Very close

From what I've been told, there was a sizeable faction of boosters who were (sincerely) talking about handling it as soon as the team returned from Lexington.

A few others tried to stem the tide by reminding everyone of the cost involved in such a move, and in response, personal pledges were made to cover sizeable portions of not only the cost of a buyout, but to bring in the caliber of replacement they felt was needed.

As we now know, the group (if a single family can be called a "group") who wanted to wait won out, but the issue was very much in doubt for a lot longer than most anyone realized at the time. I've heard that Dooley's going underground for several weeks after the loss wasn't happenstance, but was strongly suggested by protective others who feared that even (another) a single mindless quip about Nazi's, showering, or excuse-making might tip the already delicate balance of the debate. Also, heard from several people that he was busy making the rounds during that time, presenting his case, and ostensibly, while intermittently wringing his hands and sweating blood.

At one point, it seemed 50-50 to keep him. if you think he's looked absolutely lost in shell-shocked bewilderment since being hired, then his reaction following the blowback from the KY loss was his masterpiece. He simply had no conception of what that loss did to his grip on retaining that position, and the fallout that ensued from it, and some would say that he continues to express surprise that "one loss" had so drastically and forcefully change the totality of his fortunes and circumstances - but it certainly did.

This is from a very reliable poster on The8thMaxim.com.

That one family is the the Haslam family, the first family of Tennessee athletics.

Losing to Kentucky at Tennessee should always be a fireable offense.

2-0

In all seriousness, you can have Joker if you like. The win was nice but it gave Joker another season unfortunately. Misery loves company.

UT's football facilities are first class. If they don't want Dooley after 2012 they will be able to get a great coach. I could see them going after Petrino.

Don't know where you've been. Dooley should have been fired the day after he was hired.... Tennessee can do much better.

I don't know how close they were to firing, but I knew there were plenty of people in power who were already fed up with him, and Hart wasn't happy, either.

Whoever comes in after him will have a much better team than Dooley had when he came in.

I get that he looks lost at times and the Kentucky loss was unforgivable, but there was no SEC talent on the squad.

He's done a solid job of recruiting all things considered. But this year he has to win.

I personally wanted to keep him for this year. But it all rides on big wins this year. He's got to show he can coach with decent talent.

The 8th Maxim is possibly the worst vol website on the internet. The only people on that website are Dooley haters. I think thats why it was created so people could talk badly about Dooley.

Dooley was never even remotely close to being fired after the UK loss. If it was a 50% chance, then why in the hell would Hart spend all that money and time hiring new assistants to multi year contracts for the 7 new coaches? If it was that bad, it would have been much easier to just hire a new coach.

Actually insiders have repeatedly said he was getting three years no matter what, and that a lot of important people believe in Dooley. Nothing has changed that.
