I'm by no means lumping you into the group in this video; but the fact that you think this is run-of-the mill behavior is disturbing.
It's not typical.
At least not everywhere, it isn't.
I've said my peace.
Here's hoping something good comes of this mess.

Sure you do, but most people don't actually do it when they find themselves in a situation like this.

I know tons of kids that weren't like this in high school, pledged a fraternity, and then it seemed like there was a lot more racist comments coming out of their mouths. Obviously not everyone feels that way, but when you have an entire group of brothers you are close with you are more inclined to agree with them. That doesn't excuse the actions of any of those people though. Hopefully they will learn from this.

Racism is terrible.

"The N word" still hurts people and should never be used.

People who think they have to behave like social policemen are hiding something from society if not themselves.

If you believe that this little video says anything about Oklahoma University, Oklahoma the state, or fraternities in general then you're guilty of thoughts quite similar to racism.

If you're one of the ones who thought he needed to jump on here and state, "Racism sucks! I ain't racist! I hate racism!" then you've left me SMH. It's 2015. Of course you're not racist. Why in hell would you think that anyone thought you were?

Someone running around going, "I'm not racist! Racism sucks!" is not unlike someone running around saying, "I don't believe the world is flat! I know the earth is round!" If I ever heard anyone saying this then I would be thinking, "Hmmm. Some part of that idiot thinks the earth is flat."

And on the 50th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday too. Just sad. Those kids weren't accidental racists doing dumb shite. They were flying hardcore racist flags with pride. I'd never even heard a lynching song before today.

I don't think anyone is saying it's typical or condoning the actions. I know my whole point was to try and describe how it likely happened since you were talking about how unbelievable it was.

It's likely an ancient chant they learned one day when they were shitfaced, the same as generations before them learned, and no one made a big deal out of it because they are drunk, stupid, and entitled kids.

Rarely are these actions ever done with actual malice or hatred. They quite literally don't understand what they're saying. They haven't exactly experienced the real world yet where they actually have to understand what they're saying and the consequences of it. It's just something they think is cool to say.

We went through that shite with students chanting The South Will Rise Again after one of our band's songs. The students weren't chanting that in support of the klan...it was just something cool they heard other people do and wanted to fit in.

They're fricking idiots....no one is denying that.

I've read to a sufficient depth already.

This is very dumb. An 18-19 year old knows what a racial slur and hanging people from a tree means.

I am usually one to try and give people a break, but I disagree here.

They know what they are doing. This makes them feel superior and they like it. Unfortunately, a good deal of being in a frat is about feeling like you belong to something that affirms your worth, so this isn't surprising. I am not saying that all frats are this way at all, but it is not hard to see how some can be a breeding ground.

And look at the girls in the video. Clapping and singing along. Hearing on Twitter that they are OU Tri-Delts. Not sure though. They are brainwashed to go along with it too.

Pure stupidity.

I completely agree with you here. Unfortunately, I wasn't always the wisest with this sort of stuff at the beginning of my time in Athens because I had some friends from very racist communities and I would occasionally make jokes that I'm ashamed of now. Fortunately, I surrounded myself with the right sort of people and began to do my own thinking and research on racism and the detriment it plays to society and have a different outlook on it now than I did 6 years ago. I was never racist, but I was embarrassingly tolerant of it. I'm hoping these kids and kids all around the country get a wake up call from seeing this.

I would be surprised if none of these kids associate with or even have black friends. I doubt any of them have even thought about what an actual lynching would be like and wouldn't be disgusted by the sight of it. But the group mentality kicks in and people do things contrary to what they would Normally say or do and shite like this happens

Dude, you're sitting here getting all brusque with folks because they're not being dismissive of this stuff because these kids "don't know what they're saying."

That's bullshite.

Yeah, kids do dumb things. Kids also know right from wrong, and slurs from non-slurs, etc. Peer pressure is the likely culprit, but that in and of itself doesn't give kids a pass just because these actions were never meant to see the light of day, so to speak.

Since it has, it needs to be lambasted like it has been in the court of public opinion.
