Dude, you're sitting here getting all brusque with folks because they're not being dismissive of this stuff because these kids "don't know what they're saying."
I never said these kids shouldn't get their asses kicked in a dark alley. They absolutely should.

Yeah, kids do dumb things. Kids also know right from wrong, and slurs from non-slurs, etc. Peer pressure is the likely culprit, but that in and of itself doesn't give kids a pass just because these actions were never meant to see the light of day, so to speak.
I never said otherwise.....

Since it has, it needs to be lambasted like it has been in the court of public opinion.
completely agree. I have no idea why you think I'm trying to give these kids a free pass(I blame your aforementioned lack of comprehension....). I've just been calling bullshite on posts saying this type of behavior isn't normal.
It very much is normal. But think of it on a deeper level....and not just this racial incident. Kids do dumb shite all the time on the basis of peer pressure, trying to get laid, etc.
Most 18-19 year olds are gigantic pussies. Insecure as hell and trying to show off to impress people. Then, they get older and realize they were fricking stupid back then.
...and then the same thing will happen to the next generation...and the ones after that, etc.

They know what they are doing and their actions are pure stupidity.
Tell me...what exactly are they doing? Are they on their way to actually lynch people? Firebomb and black church? What, exactly are they doing?
It looks to me like they're chanting some dumbshit chant thinking it makes them look cooler hoping to impress their dates.
And yes.....stupid as frick.
quote:
They are willfully doing this.
You're right...no one is holding a gun to their head....

I think you're right.
Most of them might not necessarily hate black people, but they feel more elite about themselves because they are part of am institution that can still ban whoever they want.
It's sick behavior, but I'm not really surprised, and I don't think this deserves the week-long spoonfeeding from the media that we are sure to get from this.

bullshite...they're card-carrying racists.
...apparently.

You know, when you utter stupid, racist shite, folks who hear it might get the crazy idea that you're a stupid racist, whether you actually lynch someone or not

Singing and laughing about hanging n**gers from a tree and they'll never join your secret white club makes you a card carrying racist. Yes it does.
That doesn't mean that they won't change or wake up. But, on that bus that night at that point in their lives? Yes.

I think there is a middle ground between what the two of y'all are saying. Unfortunately, racism in fraternities is quite common but not everybody grows out of it. The racism starts somewhere and to be quite honest sometimes it starts from the communities from which people come. When I compare my friends from Atlanta and the surrounding areas which are more diverse and culturally updated, to the ones from Newnan, Forsythe County, and some areas of South Georgia it's generally those types of people that are truly racist, and that happens because it is acceptable in those communities. Peer pressure is definitely an issue for some kids and they will regret it, but for others it's something they will continue for the rest of their lives unfortunately.

Yeah. They even spelled it wrong.
"No sunglasses."
Forget that. I couldn't walk across campus.

Dumbasses can't even spell their pejoratives correctly.

That list came out 8 years ago. It still isn't acceptable, but I'd like to think that isn't the case now.

fwiw, I'm purposefully skewing my argument further away than what my argument really is.
You've nailed my point. My issue is people saying things like this don't happen. It does....and for the dumbest of dumb reasons. Someone in this thread legitimately said they were in a fraternity at an SEC school and nothing ever racist happened.
That's unequivocal bullshite.

Yeah. I just saw that it was from 2007. Thanks. I hope there has been change too. FIJI was one of the good fraternities on my campus.

The fact that we have kids that are still racist in the country is embarrassing, and we need to do something about it.
I almost believe that a lot of you would support a constitutional amendment criminalizing racism. While we're at it we could pass laws against snoring, masturbation, and lying to our wives.
What exactly do you suggest we do about it? Concentration Death Camps?

I wish it were more acceptable to whip people's asses in certain situations. Would be difficult to determine where it's warranted and where it isn't....but this is one of those cases where a good ol' arse-whipping would be justified.
