I have long since looked at it this way: the more primitive the society the more powerful are words. You aren't going to go to Geneva, Switzerland and scare a lot of people with some vocalized hocus pocus mumbo jumbo. In Cambridge not a lot of people are going to say, "Don't joke about your grandma dying or she might die!" They're just not likely to perceive a cause-effect relationship between the human pharanx and the will of Fate.

In parts of Louisiana, on the other hand, uttering certain cacophonies result in wide eyes and flight. Flight probably accompanied by other (reactive) mumblings. Pretty sure if you go down to the Amazon and find yourself amongst some of those unconcacted tribes you'd better be careful what you say. Disturb the atmosphere with your mouth and pharynx and the wrong array of tones and you could well be piranha fodder by sundown. It's serious shite.
