Leave it to California Liberal retards to stick their nose where it doesn't belong. They should worry more about their own state which is sinking faster than the titanic on the account multiple towns are on the verge of bankrupcy, among other things. Classic California. *shakes head*

Yeah, if only those idiots in California could get their shite together and move to Mississippi, amirite?

Because if you choose to believe the results of some studies, they disproportionately impact voters of color than they do white voters. I don't think they're racist in intent, but I do think they are aimed at keeping certain people from voting.

In addition, the legislation is sold as being necessary to reduce voter fraud, as if that's somehow a problem that needs fixing.

So you don't think things should ever be brought up for discussion ever again? That votes shouldn't be recast? That elections shouldn't be regular things?

Because that's stupid.

We never had a vote in the matter. We did unseat an incumbent governor though.

I'm not sure what you mean by that.

ETA: I literally know what that means, as in I know that Mississippi isn't Georgia, but I guess I'm not sure what your point is.

Or maybe they didn't want a politically divisive symbol of treason and oppression on their flag? You don't need to be Jesse Jackson or a member of the NAACP to espouse that point of view.

Saying they "gave in" in spite of significant political pressure to the contrary is pretty self serving to your point of view, as well. "Everybody who doesn't think like me's a coward! Because I'm a fireman!"

The Georgia situation is not even comparable anyway because they created that flag in the 50s, like they were trying to be racist on purpose.

Or maybe their residents found the flag offensive?

So did Mississippi, but not during the Civil Rights era like Georgia did, but rather during the end of Reconstruction when the Democrats took control of the legislature from the Republicans for the first time since the Civil War. It was basically a "hooray the blacks and Yankees are out of power in Mississippi again" flag.

That was prior to the flag becoming a known symbol for the KKK so no it is not comparable.

But if it is now known as a symbol for the KKK why would you still want to be associated with that.

And yes I know that symbols change. The swastika was known as a symbol of good luck, and used in many religions world wide for hundreds of years. But what would happen if Germany still used that symbol today?

I know it's not the same, but the fact that the flag was adopted by the same Mississippi government that wrote the 1890 constitution (which levied poll taxes, literacy tests for voting, etc.) shouldn't be ignored.

Furthermore, even though they didn't adopt it with the KKK symbolism in mind, that shouldn't preclude it from being changed today. Their motives in the 1890's don't automatically change how we perceive it today.

Like I said I don't really care what happens with the flag from here on out. They can change it, whatever. People's opinions of Mississippi will NEVER change, so I don't give a flying frick what our flag is.

I do enjoy confederate history, and have several family members who died fighting for the confederacy, and I do think the current flag is aesthetically pleasing, but I don't display any confederate symbols on my person in public.
