The Strutting Duck had a pitcher and wing special once a week…can’t remember the day but we were there every week and it was cheap.
It was $0.10 wings and $1.75 32 oz draft beer on Monday nights from '90 - '92. Missed a lot of 8:00 am Tuesday classes.

One of my “stick-to-your-ribs”, hearty, go-to meals was:
Take a Roll/Can of Pilsbury biscuits…crack it open and start baking the biscuits in a deep pan according to the directions.
After they’ve started to rise, but before they’re done (about 10 minutes), pour a “big” can of Dintey Moore beef stew over the biscuits & spread it around evenly over the partially cooked biscuits.
Throw it back in the oven on whatever temperature you started on for about another 30 minutes and you got a cheap, easy, and filling “meat & tater’s” meal

This works but ultimate is to make it in a cast iron skillet. I have done some similar stuff

Yeah, but back in the mid 80’s when one of the only “Celebrity Chef’s” I could name was the Swedish one from the Muppets…in my mind I was working culinary magic with just a sleeve of raw biscuits, a big-arse can of beef stew, and a crappy semi-rusted hand-me-down metal baking pan.
shite…as far as I was concerned…I was gonna be the next Chef Boyardee…and figured I had the BEST cooking game going on at the time of ANYONE else on Genelda Ave.

Not meals, but me and my buddies back in the day used to do Friday pre-gameday Happy Hours at Waldo Peppers.
$3 pitchers of bar-brand gin & tonic or bourbon & coke.
Back in the print media days, there used to be a line-up of newspaper machines outside Toomers Drug Store. Well, we got well lit one night at Waldo's and ran out of money to keep drinking. Toomer's Corner was on our way home (to Plainsman Apartments on Magnolia) and there were those damn newspaper machines. We dared one of our buddies to tackle one of the newspaper machines. So he got down in a three point stance and we gave him the hut (not the hut-hut) and damn if he didn't tackle the machine down. And said machine, upon hitting the sidewalk, broke open spilling all its coinage.
Back to Waldo Pepper's fellers!
(Me and said buddies still tail-gate on Game Days to this very day. My best friends and brothers always.)

There was a place over in Opelika called James Brown family restaurant…Used to bust that thing wide open on a hungover Sunday afternoon.
Man, I LOVED that place! $5.99 ribeye with fries and onion rings! Only had time to drive down there about once/week, but it was good stuff!
Rest of the time I got by on BK, McD's, Wendy's, the occasional Hartz buffet (peach cobbler, mmmmmmm) or an occasional grilled out burger.

I've had BBQ all over America, of every genre. Country's was just OK for the meat, but their baked beans were next level, never had beans anywhere else as good!

Oh shite! I had many a late night deliveries from Willies
Also:
Mr. Gattis with the track team
Niffers
Amsterdam Cafe
Buffalo Connection
Guthries
Tiger Time Diner
and I worked at Chuck's BBQ in Auburn so I ate a LOT of pork chipped on the block!
I was there 92-96. That may help with the references.

Country's has improved their BBQ meat game considerably. Not saying it is a first tier BBQ place, but they have definitely improved. The other menu items have always been pretty good.

quote:Nah, I remember Country's, it was back closer toward Dean near Ryan's. I'm trying to remember what was near (or at) the intersection of Opelika Hwy and E University. For some reason the name "Legend's" sounded like that might be the restaurant I was thinking of.

Good to hear, been years since I've been back, need to get back again and try some. Son had a Presidential Scholarship to AU and decided to pass, or I'd be coming back this Fall!
