We have no idea how good our three former top RB recruits are? I have a feeling they'll be fine.

Could you please say drop the ball 1 more time.

There is no way Saban starts Hurts this year. He's gonna go with Bateman because he's more comfortable starting experienced guys. I'm not saying Bateman will be the starter all year but I guarantee he will start against USC. I liked what I saw from Hurts in a-day but it's way too small of a sample size to say he's ready to be a SEC starter.

Since we're just throwing out opinions, here's mine. I DON'T want Bateman! He plays with a deer in the headlights look at all times to me and is always looking for the safe, high percentage throw, even when the longer ball is wide open. But I'm not the coach.
I was big time on BB8's bandwagon last year, but he hasn't progressed as much as I had hoped. He has all the tools and is better than he was. But I have noticed that BB8 seems to play with his hair on fire, seemingly always on the edge of disaster and chaos. He likes the adrenaline rush and seeks it. He's risky. Too risky at times. I think it may be his downfall.
Hurts is something special. I think his biggest hurdle right now isn't the playbook. Sure, he doesn't have it down cold, but he's learning fast. His biggest challenge IMHO is learning what he can and can't do against athletes at this level; how long he can hold onto the ball, how small of a window he can squeeze it into, how close can the DL gets before he has to escape, etc. He's learning how to adjust to this level and doing it well, he's just not done yet. And there will be mistakes like the pick over the middle yesterday. But he doesn't make the same mistake twice. I think Saban does try to redshirt him. But if my gut is right and we drop an early game or two and fall out of the west race, I'd pull the redshirt off Jalen in a New York second and let him learn.
Today, it's Bateman's job to lose by default, but the other two are gaining on him fast and he knows it. And he's feeling the pressure. You could see it yesterday. I've said all along he would start against SC but he wouldn't finish the year as starter. Now I'm not so sure he finishes the first game as starter. Barnett plays like Brett Favre and that scares Saban to death and he won't have it. They are trying to decide if they can keep BB8 on a tight leash and coach some of the wildness out of him or not. If not, do they throw Hurts into the fire and let him figure it out.
This is the toughest QB decision they've had so far, and without a proven running game to fall back on. Yeah, I'd be willing to bet the farm our RB's will be more than just serviceable, but that's still a bit of a gamble because you just don't know for sure. And Saban leaves nothing to chance. How they play the cards dealt them will be fascinating to watch.

I'll wait till scrimmages, but so far from what I've heard, I don't want Bateman. Guy was throwing the ball at players ankles yesterday.
Posted on 8/8/16 at 8:47 pm to MrBiriwa
At this point, from what I've read and saw on A-day give me either Hurts or Barnett. I'd be okay with either at this point. Barnett worries me because he seems to take more risks than what we're used to. Hurts, seems special. Looked good at A-day and the INT yesterday doesn't really bother me. I'll say this, I don't envy the coaches having to make this decision.

This is discussed every year, and every year we just start the guy with the most experience at Alabama.
Sims
Coker
Will be Bateman.

I don't believe this is actually true.

Sims and Coker weren't the most experienced guys the past 2 years?

Tua would be the starter if he was here now.

Personally, I'm hoping for a clear cut favorite by the time the season starts, freshman or not.

quote:Do you remember Sims picking up first downs when plays broke down like it was literally nothing? Hurts is the only QB on the team who can do that. There's a difference in the type of speed and quickness that Barnett has and the type that Hurts has. Hurts only needs a seam to pick up 6 yards and step out of bounds. He also has seemed much more poised in the pocket(I realize we haven't seen much of him at all).
Hurts doesnt bring more to the table

I'm team Hurts, but Saban's history is whoever got the most backup snaps the previous year will be the starter.
Awesome user name btw.

quote:Yeah, the reason has a ton to do with freshman not alsways being allowed to start. And only 1 team can win it each year. And lotsa teams have multi year starters. And not every team is Saban level Alabama. The no freshman has ever won it thing is way overblown.
Quick, name the last QB to win an SEC or national title as a TRUE freshman. Bet you can't, and there's a reason.

AJ started 3 years, so I find it hard to believe he was the most experienced when he started. He took some snaps as a RS freshman and started the next year.
As such, I'm guessing it's something other than experience that is at work here.
I'm expecting Barnett myself.

I don't like Hurts because I think he's some god-like monster who will put the team on his back like Cam.
Kiffin's offense seems very controlled. He has his hand on everything, and sorta guides the QB in game. Alabama will run a ton, throw in misdirection, lotsa short quick hitting stuff to a predetermined target, and work over the top when it's time. It takes a calm, quick release guy who is accurate to run this to perfection. We all know, because of Sims, that if the QB is also slippery as hell, it only makes it better.
Hurts seems like that guy to me. Just from what we've seen and heard, but that's all we can go on I'm these discussions.
Coker bogged down the offense like nobody's business at the beginning of the year. BB has some Coker in him IMO. Not all that smooth, sure of himself, and tosses laser beams to make up for it. That leads to amazing looking throws, and ridiculous throws.
I, like everybody else, want the best QB to play. I don't want Hurts to start if he isn't the most qualified. I just think his game is suited for this offense. If he isn't and it's one of the other guys, that's more than fine as well.

quote:Yep. At this point in the Saban era, I enjoy watching how the team works more than simply rooting for wins each Saturday. It's more fun to figure out how the coaches are thinking and watching the players do their individual jobs than it is to simply pray for wins like its the last Saturday I'll ever live.
How they play the cards dealt them will be fascinating to watch.

Ok, so who did we have who was more experienced than AJ? No one. It was between AJ and Philip Sims, and AJ was the one who had taken backup snaps the previous year.

I have no earthly idea who will start, but I have seen a few comments about needing a year of separation between Barnett and Hurts. I think that's a moot point because both of them appear to be capable of starting for most teams. I don't think Hurts will sit on the bench waiting his turn to start for one year. Likewise, I doubt Barnett will hang around if Hurts beats him out. Then you have the hotshot blue chip kid coming in next year if he stays committed. I have, though, seen worse problems to worry about. Much worse.
