I also don't recall seeing many if any true freshman that look like Hurts.

Hurts is a special talent, but so were Tim Tebow, Cam Newton, Johnny Football, Matt Stafford, Aaron Murray, AJ McCarron and many more. Most of those didn't even start their first year, and those that did had multiple losses. Guys at that position need a year to learn the system, get used to the speed of the game, etc...even the greats. If we are ok going 9-3 this year to help him grow, then fine. But if we have hopes of winning a NC, history tells us we better have a QB with at least a year in the system under his belt. I fully believe this is a CB18 and BB8 battle at this point. Those guys would both have to really tank it for Hurts to become the man in 2016.

Now that said, I could see Hurts as a RS freshman beating out both of those guys next year. He's that good.

I'd like to have some of what you are smoking
as opposed to thinking a true freshman is going to start for alabama because he threw a touchdown against the 2s in the aday game (disregarding that just a few plays earlier his longest completion of the game was a terrible pass into coverage that should have been a pick yet somehow bounced to cam sims).

So, how much have you seen of Hurts? A-day and some practice throws on video?

Like another poster said, it only took a couple of plays in the A-day game to come to the realization that he has "it." Sometimes you can just tell.

Furthermore, judging from practice reports so far, he seems to be doing very well.

I get where you guys are coming from, and I agree that he probably won't start, but just going by what we have(reports, A-day game), he seems like the most talented. I get it, I do, its just hard to think that he doesn't have a shot when the other guys haven't really shown much more than him.

He is doing well. And so are the other two. The only pick thrown yesterday was by Hurts, and Kiffin said he is still learning the offense. Kiffin basically raved about BB8 during the presser, and we know how Saban loves his veteran QB's. I'd be happy to bet anyone a steak dinner that Hurts not only doesn't start against USC, but doesn't even play. I'm sure the coaches would love to get a year of separation between BB8 and Hurts, which means Hurts needs a RS.

Again Hurts is special, but the coaches know starting a TF probably equals a couple of losses that don't have to happen when you have an elite defense, special teams and run game. Bama should be in the hunt this year with a game manager who can hand the ball off, make the right checks at the line, and make accurate short and medium throws.

Judging too much from A-Day is a fool's errand. The defenses are base defenses with little blitzing, little disguising coverages, very little stunts and twists on the DL, etc. The offenses are very stripped down as well. Very little motion, no special packages, etc. It was easy to see he was talented, but there's no way to judge how he'd do against an SEC defense throwing their entire defensive package at him.

Nobody predicted the season Blake Sims would have after his A-Day performance a couple of years ago.

He ran a 4.59 at Spring, on the real .40 with a laser it was closer to 4.79. Just so you know.

Or Coker last year for that matter. Bateman or BB8 could easily have similar or better seasons. People get down on our vets too soon at QB, and then they have great years. You'd think, we'd learn but nope...we like the shiny new toys.

I see everyone is already overlooking Bateman in here, just like Sims and Coker the past two seasons.

Yeah, I agree with you on this. I'd love for Bateman to prove us haters wrong, and ball out. He is a good, athletic, hard-working kid who deserves it.

Looks more like a discussion. Bateman has plenty going for him and I picked him for the starter in the "gun to my head" situation. However, he has two guys nipping at his heels and an obvious issue with chucking it. Could get interesting or it may not. Scrimmages will tell the tale on this entire thing. I promise.

All I've heard and seen on Bateman is that he has no deep ball to speak of and is not accurate. With Barnett and Hurts having a few more years in the program left, it would make more sense to me to have one of them start in order to shore up the QB position for the next few seasons.

Plus do you really want a QB with a weak arm in charge of the ridiculous talent we have at WR? That's like putting Julio Jones with JPW or McElroy. Just wasting talent.

Agreed, which is why I think someone above nailed it. Bateman at least has some starting and game experience, so they'll start him against USC with a conservative game plan, but give Barnett several snaps. Then they'll gradually increase Barnett's snaps in the following game in hopes he takes control before we head to Oxford in week 3.

This is why I'm for Barnett or Hurts over Bateman. Then again, I trust the coaching staff... If they start Bateman, I won't complain.

Bama doesn't want Bateman throwing the ball around with USC's loaded secondary. I look for Bama to run the ball 80% of the time against USC.

I think people are under estimating the pressure Hurts is now putting on B8.
Im not saying that B8 does not have the talent.
He has everything it takes to be the starter.
( I personally think that hitch he seems to have worked out a little more.Is the main concern)

B8 dropped the ball when he had his chance last year..Hopefully he take the shot he has to over take Batemen.
But what he thought was easy picking taking out bateman.Just became much harder with Hurts.

The kid Hurts is a coaches son QB..
So that playbook edge is not as big as it would seem to be.
But coming in early has allowed the Kid to make B8 notice him in the rear-view ..

All the pressure is really on B8 as Hurt is and was expected to red shirt..I think Hurt has just a good of a shot because of equal talent.
But more should realize B8 and B18 could drop the ball..

which I think has already happen since the Kid has arrived. It was nice to here B8 has done all the things he needed to do.
1.gain weight
2.work on mechanics(delivery).
3.Take control(leadership).

Im confident in Saban and kiffen picking the right guy.Ideally Hurts red shirt and creates class separation between he and B8..
.
The kid could pull into the current two man race of B8/18 and get a shot.

based on What saban talked about unrealistic expectations of big-time recruits in his last presser..
That signaled to me he plans on red shirting hurts.
But as a dress out red-shirt..(big difference)..

I don't care if the starting QB is Freddie Kitchens son.....I just don't want Cooper Bateman. The QB this year may have to do more than any other QB we've had under Saban, because we have no idea how good our RBs are. Bateman hasn't shown me anything from what I have seen. I thought he was terrible last season.
