What's the one big difference in this year's offense and last year's offense?

No problem with the scheme differences -- zone read, jet sweeps, scteens, etc. The difference that is an issue is with play calling.

Last season, if the run game was working, we stuck with it more. This year, even though Hurts' passing is not as good as Coker's was, Lane won't do that.

Hurts is a worse passer today than he was four months ago.

The only thing wrong with the play calling is that the QB is one dimensional.

Still hoping he picks it up soon.

Kiffin is changing the game of football this year. You find what is working in the first half and then abandon it until mid 3rd quarter or so. Instead, you wear the defense out by having some 3 and outs, (Think of all the steps those DL take running on and off the field multiple times in the first half). Then sometime in the 3rd quarter you return to what worked that one series in the first half, (and also every other game prior) and you tell everyone how you planned it that way.

No huddle tempo was the previous trend to tire out defenses. Kiffin is just taking this to the next obvious level this year with 3 and outs in the first half.

Guys he called 50 runs and 14 passes. How much do you want. 0 pass attempts? Hurts is problem not Lane. Jesus.

I think both have shown tremendous ability and tremendous inconsistencies. Not a good combination.

If not for Kiffin working around the fact that Hurts can't pass, we wouldn't even have been in this game.

And how exactly did he do this? By asking him to pass more?

LOL.

Stop giving passes to the jackass. He has all the talent you could ask for and refuses to put them in the best spot to make plays. Jalen is asked to pass 30+ times a game with NO CHECKDOWNS. Lunacy!

1. The reality is that Hurts isn't a good passer at all. He misses wide open receivers. We have one of the best WRs in all of college football, and we can't get him the ball.

2. Everyone who complains that we don't throw to Howard enough, you got your wish today.

3. Dieter and Robinson likely cost us points tonight with their penalties.

4. It's amazing that some many people repeatedly bash Kiffin, but few bash Saban for our offensive woes. That makes no sense. Saban has full control and can exercise that whenever he wants.

Show me how many of those passes had a checkdown or an open receiver.

You mean to tell me Jalen could read coverages and WRs could get open in week one but not against Washington tonight? Or against LSU?

The stat sheet lacks context.

How many pass plays were called where no pass was thrown?

Yeah we only threw the ball 14 times, but the stat that proved the overwhelming stupidity in playcalling was that Jalen had more rushing attempts than Bo Scarborough.
After the first quarter, every single playcall that wasn't Bo running downhill was a bad playcall in my opinion - and i mean that literally..

Surely you jest. Hurts has missed open receivers all year. He missed a wide open Stewart tonight, and threw behind a wide open O.J. Howard.

And checkdown for Hurts? He's not good at it.

The original post, though, wasn't about Hurts except that he's more to cause than Kiffin for our lack of production, though Kiffin keeps getting the blame. The game thread was one example. Another thread specifically about Kiffin is another.

Remember at the beginning of the season how mad people got when I said Hurts wasn't a good passer? I like the kid, but I'll take a passer over a runner at QB 100% of the time.

I'm also just not a fan of this offense. It works (usually), but I hate watching it most of the time. It's more about tricking the defense than just beating them.

You really think that Jalen could handle an expanded playbook? Not sure what your eyes have saw this season with his passing skills.

So not only do some of you want to call all running plays, but now you want the same guy to carry it every time. I'd think the defense would get kind of a clue about that, but who knows.

That silliness aside, Hurts is probably our best running back. He's just playing the qb position.

Back in the good ole days, if we had a running back that was dominating early and picking up chunk yardage, the game was over. We would control the ball, wear them down, and run it down their throats all game.

Now, regardless of how dominating our downhill run game is, we're still gonna pull out all kinds of fancy bullshite and RPOs, and running out of the shotgun, and jet sweeps. We've gone full Malzahn on offense

After the first game, I had huge hopes for Hurts, and still do. I hope he improves a lot by next year, and I think he will.

As noted, my post wasn't so much about Hurts as the fact that Kiffin is doing about as good as can be expected due to the fact that Hurts isn't a very good passing qb yet.

Not me.

I am also not a fan of out coaching yourself. If something is working make them stop it.

Maybe Kiffin is playing chess and I am paying checkers...very likely. Also likely is Kiffin prefers to out coach someone rather than just KISS.
