AND, like you said with what is between his ears.

Hurts is making great decisions consistently even to the point that CNS screams at him for not being more aggressive.

I honestly have a hard time imagining how its possible for him to be as good as he is at this early stage of his career. His mental makeup alone is amazing much less all his physical tools.

I'm with you. I'm as happy as can be, and I look forward to the day when the light comes on in the passing game for Hurts so all the haters can realize how silly they were to doubt a true freshman for not pushing the ball downfield like a NFL seasoned veteran.

No. I have a very long memory actually. I have watched all those guys develop. (JPW never really got any better, btw.) The problem with Hurts right now, is that he hasn't shown any improvement. It's not even debatable. The coaches have almost completely removed the vertical passing game from the gameplan at this point.

Maybe you should watch the game from the perspective of the other team ?

How frustrated would you be watching your defense get gassed chasing Hurts around to the tune of 100+ yards ?

How frustrated would you be to watch Hurts improvise on third and 8 picking up first downs over and over even though your secondary is covering the WR's like a glove ?

Now how would you feel as a rival fan realizing that he is only going to get better and better with both his legs and arm ?

C'Mon man. Your expectations are ridiculous.

If he's not slinging it around NEXT YEAR maybe,... maybe then its time to START to get concerned about the vertical passing game.

I hope he gets it rolling in two weeks though.

He faced the best defense he has ever faced yesterday, and you are upset because he didn't improve from the Tennessee game?

With nightmare pass rushers on both sides of the DL no less.

Completed 60% for 164 yards, 2 TD, and added another 100 yards rushing and another TD.

In his 7th start.

I hear you man, but I think his passing is a serious problem. This isn't something you fix in a bye week. Jalen Hurts is the worst passing QB we've started under Saban by far. He has great running ability, and great intangibles, but boy he is really lacking accuracy and timing. I mean we have GREAT receivers. Our receivers are one of our big strengths and we can't even use them except for jet sweeps and screens. On the plus side, he can pass just well enough to where the defense actually has to defend the pass.
I love our defense, but I haven't seen any improvements in passing since week 1. We've got what we've got at this point. If Jalen can crank it up a notch in the passing game, we could go all the way. If not, it's gonna be really tough. Regardless, we should expect to win the SEC this year.

but unfortunately I think this is a fundamental problem. He's simply not a great passing QB. Hopefully he'll make significant improvements, but it's doubtful

No. What you're seeing is the result of having an 18 year old true freshman playing QB. There's a reason you almost never see a successful true freshman QB. Considering what's he's done so far, he's been amazing. His composure and maturity is incredible. He's just raw and inexperienced as a Passer. Which is exactly what anyone intelligent would expect.

We're number one, and are playing like it on both sides of the ball. It's not perfection. But it's far from a reason to start acting like a pussy.

People just need to understand Jalen probably isn't going to turn some magical corner between now and January. This is who he will be until next September. There is no point in rehashing this every single Sunday. There might be a game where it gets us beat, there might not.

Anyone who thinks this means he just won't ever be a good passer should watch Eason this year, Stafford his freshman year or Browning (Washington QB) and Lamar Jackson last year. Being a true freshman QB in the P5 is extremely difficult.

He will probably cost us a couple of games with his lack of passing. No way he'll be able to bring us back if we ever get down like 24-3 or something like that.

It's literally impossible to post here anymore. Sorry the 18 year old true Fr hasn't shown enough improvement over the hardest part of our schedule. Jesus I hate our fanbase.

We need a little perspective here. He is a true freshman playing in a completely different system than he did in high school. He was a running quarterback that wants to be a passer. Kiffin can teach him that. He already has all the intangibles that you can't teach. Hurts will be fine.

I'm not sure we've faced the best teams on the schedule, and particularly the best defenses.

NCAA Statistics- Total Defense

1 Michigan (Big Ten) 7 7-0
2 Florida (Southeastern) 6 5-1
3 Army
4 Alabama (Southeastern) 8 8-0
5 Ohio St. (Big Ten) 7 6-1
6 San Diego St. (Mountain West) 7 6
7 Boston College (Atlantic Coast
8 Clemson (Atlantic Coast) 7
9 Louisville (Atlantic Coast) 7
10 Virginia Tech (Atlantic Coast) 7
11 Colorado (Pac-12) 8 6-2
12 Houston (AAC) 8 6-2 509
13 LSU (Southeastern) 7 5-2
14 Washington (Pac-12) 7 7-0
15 Baylor (Big 12) 6 6-0
16 Temple (AAC) 8 5-3 516
17 Auburn (Southeastern) 7 5-2

No other SEC team we have played is in the top 50. Tennessee is #81, Arkansas #83, Texas A&M #94. Speaking of Arkansas, Auburn beat them 56-3. They're evidently much better than last year.

I guess some here would rather have a scared Bateman forcing ducks into double coverage and getting tackled from behind on scrambles.

Sounds like some sour grapes from the preseason QB competition is what's going on here.

For everybody complaining about Jalen at this point... do you guys know of a better option? The coaching staff saw the potential this team had and decided that a True Freshman was the best option to lead this team to a successful season.

For those saying no improvement, if you guys look closely, the kid has all but eliminated the little crow hop from his delivery. It led (along with a little DB holding) to him overthrowing Calvin on a few deep routes the other day.

The point is, he is working on improving, but at the same time in SEC play we can't devote time to developing him as a passer, which is why the gameplan has shifted to more of a Zone-Read/Triple Option type offense.

After his TD scramble, I saw Kiffin pull him to the side and they talked about what he saw (and likely what he didnt see). It's a work in progress, but like we have been saying all along, he is a true freshman for goodness sake.

Good point.

Plus he's over-throwing now, whereas he had been under-throwing.

He's making adjustments, just overdid it a bit on 2/3 deep balls.

Do you really think that?

Other than you and PowHound, I haven't seen anybody even mention Barnett or the earlier qb competition. I can't speak for anybody else but personally I think it's probably a good thing Barnett transferred because, otherwise, there may be a divided team at this point. As it is, we are still undefeated, winning in pretty good fashion, in fact, and ranked #1 in the nation. I just can't believe many Alabama fans don't like that.

That said, have you not seen open receivers that we've been missing? Have you not seen errant passes that should have been completed, or passes that the receivers had to break stride that could otherwise been touchdowns? As noted many times now, most of our passing yards are of the jet sweep, screen, short pass variety, though we have an awesome receiving corps that can do much more than that.

No. I think it's just a legitimate topic on a sports board. People have opinions, and sometimes, one guy's opinions may differ from the next fellows. I think it's pretty much that simple.
