Oh I know. But ask yourself this, would we have scored 6 runs against Florida State had we been playing them last night?

Hell no.

Melendez is my choice. Dude can flat out coach. Imagine what his ceiling would be at Bama as opposed to ASU.

All things being equal, I'd like a guy with Bama ties, too. Who wouldn't? But all things aren't equal and there's not a name on the rumored list that has credentials as a head coach and Bama ties too. And with me, resume' wins over relations 10 times out of 10.

This. All things AREN'T equal. And a connection to the University should be the absolute LAST criteria ever in a coaching search.

Mike Dubose and Mitch Gaspard should be enough of a reminder to anyone that forcing a UA hire over more qualified candidates is absolutely stupid.

ETA - I like the idea of hiring Bohannon.

Melendez and Alabama State were just eliminated by South Alabama, 6-3.

I still want him though.

I think I have a new favorite: Greg Lovelady of Wright State.

Wikipedia Page

quote:

Greg Lovelady in an American college baseball coach, currently serving as head coach of the Wright State Raiders baseball program. He was named to that position prior to the 2014 season.[1]

Lovelady played college baseball at Miami (FL), where as a catcher and four-year letter winner, he won the 1999 College World Series and 2001 College World Series. He signed as an undrafted free agent with the Florida Marlinsorganization, and played one season with the Utica Blue Sox before turning to coaching. He served three more years at Miami, working with catchers. In his seven years in Coral Gables, the Hurricanes reached five College World Series, winning two, and appeared in the Super Regional round all seven years. In 2005, Lovelady accepted an assistant coach position at Wright State. Two years later, he added associate head coach duties. With Rob Cooper's move to Penn State, Lovelady was elevated to the top job.

He's only 37 years old. His record through his 3 years at Wright State are:

35-22
43-17
45-16

He knows the South having played and coached at Miami. His team is in the Louisville regional and they eliminated Ohio State this morning. They are currently tied with Louisville in the finals.

Thoughts?

I don't think I want our coach to be from Wright State or Alabama State. These are guys who might be good. They have done a good job where they are, but are not proven high level coaches. If we are not going to make a huge hire then I guess these guys are as good as any. I want to go get somebody who we know is going to make us a powerhouse like we should be. If we have to settle for hiring a mightbegoodcoach I think of the two I would want Lovelady over Melendez.

Depends on who we're going after. I'd imagine it's a coach who made the tournament this season and all but 16 teams will be remaining after today, so plenty of potential candidates will be open for interviews this week.

However, I'd be happy to wait if it means we're looking at a coach or assistant who makes it to a super regional.

Whenever it is, I hope it's good. I'm going to flip if Battle goes the lazy route and promotes Andy Philips.

My current two favorites are:

Brad Bohannon
Cliff Godwin

Both are young, have loads of experience in the SEC and would bring energy to the program and would not be viewed as some lazy hire. I figure we'll end up getting Mark Calvi or something similar and it will be extremely disappointing.

Calvi wouldn't be a disappointment. He has SEC experience too. Tons of recruiting ties in Alabama and Florida. He's done well at USA.

D1baseball.com has an update regarding our search but it's behind a pay wall. Anyone have an account there?

ETA: From a guy on BOL:

Mentions Pierce (Tulane HC), Jewett (Vandy Asst), Goff (La Tech HC) and....Pat Casey (Oregon St HC)

Casey is a pipe dream. He's spent his entire career in Oregon which is home. He's 57 years old and if he so chooses, he can sit on his butt at Oregon State and never accomplish anything else and he still can retire a legend. Why would he leave that?

Not only is Casey 57, hasn't he been at Oregon State for 20 years?

Kendall Rogers doesn't really have any sources or real connections relative to the Alabama coaching search. He mainly just speculates top names and people he knows.
