BOL has a hot board for the search.

Jim Schlossnagle - TCU head coach
Alan Dunn - LSU pitching coach and Alabama alum
Todd Whitting - Houston head coach
John Szefc - Maryland head coach

Ahh, good point

David Pierce - Tulane head coach
Mark Calvi - South Alabama head coach

A couple more names I've seen mentioned.

Elliott Avent has been mentioned too, but he's 60 and has been at North Carolina State since 1997.

I know it's probably discriminatory, but I don't want a coach over the age of 50.

Me too. Baseball doesn't have as much scrutiny and pressure to win as football. You can legitimately expect a successful coach to lead the program for 20-30 years. But that's only going to happen if you hire someone younger. Plus, a younger, high profile hire can rejuvenate the fanbase.

I will 2nd the Ken Griffey Jr hire. He was my favorite player when I was a kid. No telling what he would have done had he not had all the injuries when he joined the Reds.

Are you guys confident that Battle will go out and get a top notch coach?

I'm honestly worried that he might promote Andy Philips.

Phillips is why Gaspard resigned. He was likely asked to replace an assistant, if not both, to continue as head coach.

I've heard Tim Corbin of Vandy is near the top of our list. Anyone else hear this?

A pipe dream. He has it pretty good at Vanderbilt. I joked about it on tRant, but he's not leaving for another SEC job.

Why not? Vandy is notoriously cheap when it comes to coaches and facilities. We have a new stadium, piles of money and easier academic standards to recruit to. Unless he has emotional ties to Vandy it's an easy business decision.

Btw, anyone know what Gaspards salary was?

The biggest reason is Vandy being a private school and a bit easier to work the scholarships under the academic umbrella. Not to mention that he has built Vanderbilt into a baseball powerhouse. Plus, the only incentive Alabama could have offered over Vandy was facilities. He's getting those now. His pay is another matter. Not sure where it falls, being that Vanderbilt is private.

I hear NS is at the top of the list too. Anyone can make a wish list but getting them to make a lateral move would be another story.

Kendall Rogers update:

quote:

Lists Whitting (Houston), Pierce (Tulane), Calvi (USA), Cannizaro/Dunn (LSU), Travis Jewett (Asst at Vandy), Cliff Godwin (ECU) as coaches he's confirmed to be or believes will be in the mix.

Thoughts?

Whitting, Pierce, and Godwin are the ones I like from that list. Rather not go the assistant route.

Whitting looks good. Pierce, meh. Godwin is at his alma mater, not sure he's a viable candidate. Calvi looks pretty good. But so does the Alabama State guy if we're looking at in-state guys. I'd rather not roll the dice on an assistant and we shouldn't have to. I have to say, if this list is accurate, it's not a WOW list at all.

Calvi has done well at South Alabama, plus has SEC experience as pitching coach at South Carolina. He would fit nicely.
