I'd love to chunk that into a school of bull reds in the fall. It would have to be really heavy duty to last more than a few of those brutes..

re: Moon Phases For Fishing?

Posted by Sea Hoss on 5/4/26 at 2:26 pm to
I should have some good data after my trip next week as far as the New moon goes. We will be fishing Thursday, Friday & Saturday. New moon is Saturday. I expect to have good tidal movement with that moon phase.

ETA: I'm leaning towards booking nexy May 17th-19th, Full moon is on the 20th. New moon is on the 5th so you have to book the 2nd-4th and I would rather wait until mid May in hopes of more stable weather pattern and a little warmer water temps. If you don't book this far out you get leftovers...Lol

Moon Phases For Fishing?

What are your preferred moon phases for fishing? Specifically would you prefer the 3 days prior or the 3 days after the full moon or new moon? I've got a Chandeleur trip next Wednesday and it will be the 3 days leading up to the new moon. I expect the fishing to be pretty good as long as the weather cooperates. I'm looking at booking while there for next May but I'm torn on the new moon or full moon for my dates.
Imo most people use way heavier gear than necessary for snapper fishing. My 4 snapper set ups on my boat are saragosa 6k's w/ 30lb braid using 40 lb leader. We've caught hundreds of snapper up to 25 lbers on these set ups. Now I usually only fish out to about 150ft. In my boat so most fish are on the smaller end for us. If we push out to 250 ft plus I get out heavier gear as I know we are subject to get into some big girls. Im also not fishing rigs only reefs, wrecks or natural bottom.

7 guys with 3 days worth. I've got a group that does a 72 hour every September. Try to time it for gags, aj's and red snapper to be open at the same time. Some years they are all open, but in the past snapper has closed on us early. On another note I may possibly have a couple of spots for my September 1st trip this year. 2 regulars have other commitments.

I agree 100% with you. Most Capt's are good, the problem I see are people think they can pay for a 4 or 6 hr charter and go out and catch fish like the picture above. While anything is possible it is not very probable to expect that. Whatever boat a person chooses do at least a 10 or 12 hr trip to give the Capt'n the time to get offshore to deeper water to catch quality fish.

Captain Travis Ream on the Lady Em. I've been fishing with Him for several years now and He and his crew are some absolute fish killers. His family has run that boat in Destin for close to 30 years.

ETA: Mid September will have Gag grouper and AJ open so pony up the money and do a Gag trip, along with AJ and possibly ARS open you can absolutley fill the box with meat.

It popped up in one of my feeds. I can't seem to find a duration on the Noaa page but it does say it will open September 1st. I know several Captains along the Gulf I have spoken to were doubtful we would even get a Gag season this year.

AI Overview

Spots, did you see the NOAA announcement yesterday about Gag grouper season? Open September 1st and running 25-34 days due to not meeting the quota last year. AJ's open the same day and is expected to run 40-45 days :nana:
I'm booked on a 3 day September 1st for Gag, been doing this trip the last few years and crushing them.

re: Chandeleur Fishing w/ Live Bait

I was only thinking of getting 10 dozen or so just for me and maybe whoever ends up in the skiff with me. I will forgo the hassle and stick with artificials, just not popping corks and doa shrimp. I think you catch more fish that way but not the quality fish. I'll stick to coastal brews, z man ballerz, slick lures and I also have a plethora of marker 54, live target, nomad design and vudu shrimp.

Chandeleur Fishing w/ Live Bait

I've got a 3 day trip mid May and was curious if anyone has fished the islands with live shrimp or croakers? My initial thoughts are that the catfish would be a nightmare with live shrimp but was wondering if anyone has experience trying it. I've kept shrimp alive for days with a bucket and aerator so I don't think that would be an issue, but I'm not so sure if it would be worth the extra hassle. I'm trying to gain any advantage I can to catch quality size fish.TIA
I usually line the inside of my wrapping paper with before wrapping. Not sure if it makes a difference or not, but I doubt it could be hurting anything either.

Thanks for all the replies. I came across a couple of CI4 stradics that I couldn't pass up, a 3000 and a 4000. I was thinking the 7'3" med/hvy for the the 4k and a med 7'3" for the 3k. These will be for trout fishing. I have 4 Bulls Bay rods that I really like but there rods are $180 each where I can get 2 of the Cajun rods shipped for $245. It seems the specs show they are built with quality components. Thanks Again

Anybody using these rods and have any feedback? I'm thinking about ordering a couple of them for trout rods, but have never seen them anywhere. The price makes it very tempting as wellas being built in the USA.
