I own a Sportsman Tournament 214. Love it. Finish, ride, layout, access.....all of it. The few complaints I would have are minor and not worth mentioning. I agree that the layout on the Masters series is a little odd. I would definitely give them consideration.

Look at the brakes. Make sure the brake race is clean and slightly lubed. How many brakes do you have on? They may be worn and need to be replaced.
Happens often when a reel whines when casting everyone always assumes it is a bearing. Many times it is the brakes that need to be cleaned. They are spinning and rubbing to slow the spool down and can make noise when they get dried out.

yes you need a license to guide.
