Right but that's not the issue here. The issue is about libertarianism working.
I've run the gambit, Alx. I started out as a Prog, then neocon, then conservative, then minarchist, and now am philosophically an ancap.

Like I just mentioned above, I won't hate on anyone who wants to reduce the size and scope of government. I'm just saying that if you look at it, it's kind of foolish to believe that politicians know best how to organize society.

Amen! But government by the people can be controlled. And without it, we will have government by authoritarians. There is no option besides balancing on that unstable spot where to one side lies tyranny of government and to the other lies tyranny of anarchy.

I think that anarcho capitalism would disincentives all kinds of bad choices/behaviors that society is loaded w/. The relentless protection of property rights tends to keep people in line.

That said, if people say they are minarchists, constitutionalists, individualist, or whatever else would reduce the size and scope of government, I'm here for it.
People are basically good and bad.

Yes, totally fine w/ merchants making tons. They are supplying things needed when they are needed most. You also seem to assume they all collude or something. If one merchant wanted to undercut the competition, he could do that, but guess who would be the first to run out of supplies?

You should widen your lens. How much MORE misery is there when people can't get gas or hotel rooms? There are second and third order effects you're not considering at all.

And yet you continue to live in a fantasy land that will never become reality.

It's happening for the world to see down in Argentina as we speak. It does not happen over night. I wish it would, but government is THE religion in most societies.
quote:

My guess is that what you call “libertarianism” is really just small government conservatism. That is practicable.

No. I'm pretty hard core, Penrod. I'm an ancap.

But, I do realize that is not going to happen, so much like Milei, I see it as the North Star. Every step closer to it is better for society.

Nothing is a bigger warlord than government. Nothing has ever, or will ever come close.

And about human nature and government; What kind of people do you think a monopoly on power attracts?
I get you believe that. I'm asking you to elaborate on it.

Keeping w/ the topic of this thread, is it your belief that politicians know what the price of things "should be" when a disaster hits or is coming? Libertarians don't believe that. It's human nature to hoard as much as you can when an emergency is coming, and you'll hoard a lot more when prices are lower than they'd otherwise be.
quote:

This is why libertarianism, much like socialism, will always fail. It ignores human emotion/behavior.

I could not possibly disagree w/ this more. Libertarians understand human nature better than most. It's a big reason we're libertarians.

We understand completely that people react to incentives AND disincentives. We understand completely that the price system is really just an information system of where scarce resources are most efficiently allocated. It isn't just one guy picking out a price to tell the whole market. It's trillions upon trillions of decisions every day of where to spend your scarce resources. Whether it's time, money, or effort.

Government, however, rejects this incredible mechanism for efficiently allocating resources....just when we need that system to work the most.
quote:

Fair market value means the price negotiated between a willing seller and a willing buyer, with neither party UNDER DURESS.

This seems broad AF. Who gets to decide what "under duress" is?

Keeping prices "normal" during times when demand skyrockets is a recipe for shortages. And what about all the extra work employees have to put in when they are slammed to the gills w/ frustrated and freaked out customers?

People are a lot less likely to completely fill their tanks when gas is 10 bucks a gallon as opposed to 3 bucks a gallon. They will not rent more hotel rooms for their families when prices double. They will not take more supplies than they think they'll need.

Now, it does suck for those who don't have a lot of money to begin with, but struggling to get things is a lot better than not having them at all.

Another thing that those gouging laws do is discourage much more supply flooding into areas that need those products/services, which would end up putting downward pressure on prices overall.

Any thoughts?

About a year ago, leaving New Orleans to fly back to Tampa, has a Muslim start praying before we took off.

My a-hole was clinched the entire time. Was side eying him the whole flight.
Currently? Argentina. They are on the right path, and the only way it was possible was a multi-party system. La Libertad Avanza isn't even 5 years old, yet his party dominated the elections back in October.

When's the last time Republicans actually cut the size and scope of government? Sure, we get deregulations here and there, some tax cuts, but they always spend like fricking crazy.

The closest we had to someone who would actually follow through on their rhetoric was Ron Paul, but we ended up w/ John fkn McCain and Mitt fkn Romney.

I used to believe that a two party system was superior, but the evidence clearly says otherwise. Real outsiders who would actually reign in government have almost ZERO shot of winning any meaningful offices in America.

I think ID and same day, in person voting would suffice. Oh, and, election materials/instruments only in friggin English.

That would be an improvement for sure, but I want waaay less people voting. This idea that everyone whose eligible should vote is batshit crazy to me.

If you don't know the role/limits of government, you should have zero say in who runs it.
I get the arguments for term limits, but the real problem is the ungodly retardation of voters.

We need poll tests, not new crops of groomed politicians that will just carry on the status quo.

What's funny about my post, Jake? I'm completely willing to hear/consider arguments that go against my views.

I sure AF hope this is true. Will suck for a while while the price system works out the kinks, but the size and scope of government will be crushed if this were to happen.

Totally worth it.
Is there a more corrupt group of people in government than black women politicians?
