The AP awarded the title "after" the bowl game. The UPI awarded the titel "before" the bowl games. They changed that in 1973.
That is why so many felt Bama was slighted. Today, (like Notre Dame now) if a team is undefeated untied- like Bama was in 66, and another team decided to go for a tie in their bowl game, everyone would have voted for the 11-0 team. However, ND was voted the champion that year instead of bama.
