re: What's something you have never done that most people have

Cursed
Drank alcohol (outside of Mass)
Done any non medical drugs
Had sex
Missed a week of church
You might say I'm missing out but the prize I'm working for is much greater than earthly vices. I get a stronger high from securing my salvation than any substance could ever give me

re: Do any OTers get optical migraines?

Were you aware of the 12th century German Mystic, Hildegard of Bingen? She experienced mystical visions of shimmering colors throughout her life. She attributed her vision to glimpses of heaven... Today it's commonly thought that she was experiencing optical migraines...

I find Texas to be both dull, and the most disheartening state to drive through, as I can drive ALL DAY, and still be within the state of Texas. It's interminable.
re: So Explain this to me...

So explain this to me - Alabama has 1 Loss to a non Top 25 Ole Miss ...
Actually, Alabama lost a close one to #15 Ole Miss after shooting themselves in the foot repeatedly, along with an incredibly lucky TD pass from Ole Miss... but then went on to beat three ranked teams; #8 Georgia, #9 Texas A&M, and went on to LSU. Ole Miss's current ranking doesn't matter...after all you wouldn't say that Alabama beat a #9 LSU - they beat a #2 LSU.

re: Who here didn't go to college but found a career that they succeeded in?
Posted by Bamaal on 10/29/15 at 11:53 am
I might have done better with a college degree... maybe, possibly... but have done OK without it. Both my brother and sister have degrees, and I've consistently out earned them over the last 20 years. Believe me, if it's money you want, it's not that hard to get if you're willing to work hard. If your plan is to get a 40 hr a week job, and just cruise through life, you'll be better off with the degree.
re: Anybody on here collect art?
Posted by Bamaal on 10/29/15 at 11:40 am
I collect art...I have 40+ oil paintings that I've bought over the years, and my only advice is NEVER buy for an investment - only buy things that you enjoy looking at. If they bring a smile to your face daily, they're worth it. I've paid anywhere between $25 and $7,000 for each piece and have no assurance whatsoever that any of them will ever appreciate in value. Anyway the point's moot as I'd never sell them. I bought them because I like looking at them.
Oh, and women dig them - shows that you're a classy kinda guy.

re: Are there any dirtier sounding words than girth and moist?

I don't get the "moist" dislike... I never think of women as being moist... they're either wet or they're dry...

I saw this article about the "greatest hoodie ever", and wound up checking out the American Giant website...I didn't buy the hoodie, but bought one of their baseball jackets instead. It is absolutely the best baseball jacket I've ever seen. They definitely make a superior product.

I've been wondering if his story about his mother's death is true...wondering if maybe he pushed her...perhaps he saw his chance and took it. Correctly assuming that no one would blame a child...
re: Who do so many people drive with fog lights on all the time?
Posted by Bamaal on 1/21/15 at 2:06 pm
I'm in my 50's and my night vision isn't what it used to be, so I tend to use my fog lights at night to illuminate up the edges of the road...it's a easier way to add more lighted area, without blinding other drivers.

re: Why is Arky getting no respect from tRant?
Posted by Bamaal on 10/14/14 at 2:42 pm
Alabama played a really sloppy game against Arkansas, but I'm thinking some of that was due to the fact that Arkansas is vastly improved...they're due for a win (and I'm happy as hell to have escaped)

re: Duck Tape or Duct Tape?
Posted by Bamaal on 10/9/14 at 12:26 pm
The modern silvery tape that you're enquiring about is/was called "duct" tape - commonly used as a sealant on ducting. It was however, modeled after an earlier product called "duck" tape - a tape that was made of waterproof cotton duckcloth...

I would check out Paramount or Carrigan's Public House. They are great new bars.
As for downtown restaurants, go to El Barrio. Order a margarita, cheese dip with chorizo, and either the chorizo meatloaf or anything with the prime rib. You are welcome.
---------------------------------------------
Good advice here....Carrigan's does take a while to get your drink, but there's always a crowd of women there to talk to while you're waiting! And El Barrio is the bomb. There's also The Collins bar midway between Paramount and El Bario...it's cool too. Downtown is only 5-10 min from Soho, so its no big deal either way...

re: How much would 100lbs of potatoes @ 99% water weigh after they dry to 98% water?
Posted by Bamaal on 9/23/14 at 4:04 pm
Someone posited that:
________________________________________
100 lbs of potatoes, 99% water (by weight), means that there's 99 lbs of water, and 1 lb of solids. It's a 1:99 ratio.
If the water decreases to 98%, then the solids account for 2% of the weight. The 2:98 ratio reduces to 1:49. Since the solids still weigh 1 lb, the water must weigh 49 lbs.
________________________________________
100 lbs of potatoes, 99% water (by weight), means that there's 99 lbs of water, and 1 lb of solids. THIS IS TRUE
If the water decreases to 98%, then the solids account for 2% of the weight. The 2:98 ratio reduces to 1:49. Since the solids still weigh 1 lb, the water must weigh 49 lbs. THIS IS NOT TRUE. The solid still weighs 1 lb, that’s true…what’s NOT true is that the solid is now 2% of the 100lbs…IF 99% equaled 99lbs, how could you possibly think that 98% equaled 49lbs? You’re saying that 100lbs of potatoes dried out a little, and lost HALF their weight?
So, let’s think about this….
If a potato is 99% water, then 100 lbs of potatoes contains 99 lbs of water and 1 lb of other material. For the potatoes to dry down to 98% water, we’ll need to understand that the solid portion still weighs 1 lb, but the 99 lbs of water is going to decrease…
The 1 lb of solid material remains, but the moisture content is reduced from 99% to 98%.
So the question is, if 99% equaled 99lbs of water, what does 98% weigh?
Which can be expressed as 99pct/99 lbs = 98pct/x lbs, cross multiply and we get 99x = 98 x 99, which equates to 99x=9702, which is expressed as x=9702/99, which equals 98… as in 98 lbs. And we still have our 1 lb of solid material, so our slightly drier potatoes now weigh in at 99 lbs instead of their previous 100 lbs!
