Hindsight is great. No one knew what the eventual sanctions might be and basketball was under investigation along with a very serious football issue. I believe the NCAA was / is a hypocritical organiztion which ignored worse violations by Cal, Coach K, Good ole Uncle Roy etc and shite all over Wade at the same time. To this date they have not convicted him of any violations while coaching at LSU, but that was irrelevant when the whole athletic department was under scrutiny and national scorn. You better believe McMahon was told to do nothing that might bring more NCAA attention and further place the whole athletic department into jeopardy. So, yes those sanctions were potentialy draconian and played a pivotal role in the moribundity of the basketball program.

When I wasa a student I would spend a lot of time playing and shooting at the Gym Armory (now the academic center for athletes) and got to know one of the LSU assistant coaches Tom Farrel. He thought I had some ability and suggested I walk on for the upcoming seaon but I had a lot going on and didn't take him up on the offer. I have often regretted it . This was in the last years of Press Maravich's tenure without Pete. They still had Apple Sanders and Danny Hester and Collis. It would have been a great experience entering the court in the waning minutes of a rare blowout win.

Its irrelevant what sanctions were ultimately imposed, the threat of what might have happened hung over the program for his firstt two years and no doubt negatively impacted recruiting. There was no 20 million dollar war chest to help overcome that , either.
