saw this guy live and couldn't stop laughing at how bad the show was.
don't know much about hip hop so I can't comment on the rest. need to get more into that genre. favorite hip hop album of mine so far is liquid swords, but I'm not very well versed in the genre. will look up some stuff from this thread.

re: what ya listening to?

they're really not that underrated. and by that I don't mean they're bad, but they're not really that unknown.
to the op:
lately I've been on a MJTP kick.

I wonder when the last time was that the grammy for album of the year went to someone deserving of it.

grammys don't mean anything. I don't like either of those bands but alabama shakes are much better.

Of albums that have come out so far in 2013 I guess my favorites have been Wil Wagner's Laika and m b v. Most looking forward to new waxahatchee, which is march I think. Will also listen to new MGMT, Dismemberment Plan, and Wrens. Could be a good year idk

this thread is terrible.
only directed at the people with awful submissions.
really not sure what to put but I feel like elliott smith should be on here so:

King Crimson
certainly a well known band, but most people just know a song or two. I definitely would agree with you on them being underrated though based on In the Court of the Crimson King's influence on progressive rock.

Sorry cool guy I don't even know what that stands for. And I have never heard of any of those groups you named earlier in this thread. Are they even "rated" at all? Where could someone find out about such awesome music? You would think they would be more available since they are so great.
you know the internet is a wonderful thing in that so much is easily accessible. this is a thread about underrated bands. the entire purpose is posting bands that most people are not familiar with, but the bands had strong influences on music, or are currently releasing really good albums that are not just the same rehashed formula as many bands that gain a lot of attention (often undeserved). one of the marks of a great underrated band is when bands that come after them (some that become very popular) state how much influence they gained from these bands that most have not heard before.
to other people that posted:
I agree about Big Star being extremely appreciated now. they're still definitely one of the great underrated bands of all time though given the fact that their albums originally received critical acclaim, but were not known because of poor distribution from a bankrupt Stax records and a lack of live shows.
and whoever mentioned Teenage Fanclub, I completely agree. they released amazing power pop in a time where most popular bands put out mediocre grunge.

Based on what?
the fact that it's recycled trash. kys if you think POD should be rated higher.

I liked it okay after my first listen last night. that type of music isn't really my cup of tea, but I respect loveless and m b v was an enjoyable album.

In the rock category I would definitely say POD.
awful music does not equal underrated.

big star are clearly one of the best answers. #1 record is one of my favorite albums of all time, and kind of the definition of being underrated considering it was basically never played to much of an audience, even though the band put out a couple more albums. big star are very underrated, but given their attention in recent years, I have to think of some others to say that are still virtually unheard of outside of music snob world.
Game Theory and Television Personalities come to mind. As for modern music I'd probably say Wingnut Dishwashers Union, Beulah, or maybe Swearin' (even though they only released their first album last year, doubt they'll get big though).
