«Ça va?» «Ça va. Ça va?» «Ça va.» is a legitimate conversation in France that is just asking and answering the question “how are you?”

“How’re things?/How’s things?/What’s the craic?” is the only way I’ve ever been greeted by an Irishman.

“¿Que tal?” is an opener in Spanish that has only ever garnered the response “bien” for me, and it just means “how are you?” “Fine.”

“How’s it going?” might be the most common opening phrase I get from British people.

This is like those “only in (X state) can (Y thing) happen” ideas that happen across the entire US.
When the teacher rolled in that big arse cart with the big arse box shaped TV, we knew class was gettin' turnt!

Career day, we got to do activities not just listen.

Running the 5th grade market/getting to visit the 5th grade market when you weren't yet in 5th grade.

Choir practice (I was part of the 10% not in the choir, so we got to just play games and watch movies instead of work).

"Art a la carte" where we got to look at and try to copy different artistic styles. It was run by stay at home moms who came in to the school every so often and was infinitely better than art with the art teacher.

The only thing I really had an issue with in season 6 was Arya running away from the Waif after getting gutted.

After falling into a canal full of waste  that’s a microcosm of some of the issues that the show has had in later seasons.

quote:

I agree with a lot of this, but The Winds of Winter was a damn masterpiece from start to finish.

It had some really good moments. I’ve only seen it twice, so I’m not going to get deep in an argument. But there’s little of the “human heart in conflict with itself” element that’s so important to GRRM and has made Game of Thrones so good.

The (I believe) cold opening where the Frey pie plot is played out is one of those moments like Arya’s stabbing. How the hell did she survive sepsis? How the hell did she murder a bunch of Freys, butcher them, and bake them into pies in a kitchen full of Frey cooks, scullions, and other servants?

Season 6 was amazing and had 2 of the best episodes of television ever.

I assume you’re talking about “Battle of the Bastards” and “The Winds of Winter”. I disagree that either are even the best Game of Thrones episodes, but they represent the major issues with seasons 5-8. D&D are good at executing the broad strokes. They are less good at executing the smaller strokes on the way. Because they’re privy to the major plot points that will be in Winds and Dream, the major events in seasons 5-7 have been good and likely will be in season 8... but they stumble and fumble their way there at times.

On season 2, episode 9, “Blackwater” now. Top 3 episode in the series. It marks the golden age of Game of Thrones for me, “Blackwater” to “The Children”.

Notre Dame, but especially the interior. Pictures just can't do it justice.

The Eiffel Tower, particularly at sunset from Trocadéro. When you get off the metro and turn the corner and it just hits you... then the sun goes down and you see it sparkle for the first time... it makes your heart leap.

Rows and rows of white crosses and stars of David at the Normandy American Cemetery. Far too many with this inscription.

A wall of rock and coral that steeply stretches from a mere 60 feet below the surface to thousands of feet below. It feels like you're floating along the edge of the world when you're down there looking out into the deep, dark blue abyss.

Honorable mentions for me would be Lake Como, the Duomo in Milan, the fountains in the garden at Versailles (when turned on), the view from the Empire State Building, and the picos de Europa mountains in Spain.

what time do you think is the best time to go out there?

For Bama 2012 we got there before 7am and were not the first. This was when the show started at 9am though, they used to have a 1-hour show that didn't feature Kirk, Des, or Lee as a lead-in.

what are the best countries to teach abroad.

People who have done it can’t shut up about their time teaching in Korea, but I don’t see myself enjoying teaching abroad in Asia. I prefer Europe.
quote:

what are the pros/ cons?

Pros: Cost of living is cheap as hell, you can work as few as 16 hours per week, the job is easy (usually), bureaucracy is an absolute mess, Spain has incredible places to visit (green, rainy, and cold mountains; deserts and desert mountains; Mediterranean and Atlantic beaches), travel is cheap, lots of holidays, and the Spanish lifestyle in general is pretty great.

Cons: Really just the normal expat stuff. Watching LSU games is a pain in the arse, nobody from the States will actually visit you, sometimes you really want food from home and it's just not possible to get here, bureaucracy is an absolute mess, Spanish nationalism gets old (don't insult the food, don't talk about Franco or fascism or Catalonia), it's expensive to visit the States, and people will look down on you for teaching and not having a real job (even though if you're motivated and willing to put in the hours, you can actually make a good amount of money compared to the cost of living).

quote:

what is life like?

A typical week for me involves planning classes for a couple of hours on Sundays. Work for about 5 hours per day at a primary school Monday-Friday. Give ~2 private classes per day after school Monday-Thursday. I have basketball practice Wednesday nights, soccer practice Thursday nights. I also have to replan classes midweek sometimes. Friday I go to a bar, I go out, or I go to a friend's. Saturday I play a soccer game and have 1 euro beers. Sunday I have a basketball game and afterwards go to the park (weather permitting) and day drink until it's time to lesson plan. There's lots of drinking here.

quote:

what do you eat?

Whatever I cook plus a few American foods that exist in Spain, or at least foods Americans are very used to. There's a good burger place that runs a special and a taco place that sells the best real Mexican tacos I've ever had. I snack on cold cuts and cheese often.

quote:

what friends did you make?

Mostly Europeans, but some Americans. There is no shortage of people who come to Spain to teach English or study. You'll find plenty of foreigners looking for friends if you're in a medium to large city. You'll also find friends just by trying, like anywhere else.

quote:

how can i party on beaches and meet Spainish and Portuguese women ?

You won't do this. Even the south of Spain can get chilly in fall/winter, which is the majority of the time you're in your city. The north is cold. Even in summer, the northern beaches can be miserable if it's not a perfect day. Get images of the Canaries, Ibiza, Majorca, and Barcelona out of your head now, because you either don't want to or won't be able to live there. There's also a stereotype of most Spanish women being difficult for Americans to date, sorry to break it to you.

quote:

do you get tired of being a babysitter

Sometimes. Sometimes I wish I taught at a secondary school instead, but I also have some great classes with my primary school students. I never get tired of private lessons because the pay is so good.

quote:

If i quit halfway, im guessing I have to pay for plane ride back??

Unless you want to live in Spain illegally, yes you have to leave. You also have to pay for your ticket there.

Honestly, it's not a good idea to move abroad to teach unless you want to do it. Some people do it to "soul search" and have a terrible time, and some people end up loving it. But to me it's not worth the risk if you're not sure and excited about it.
Not sure if this is all a troll or if you're really that down on yourself, but I live in Spain and teach English. AMA!
I joked to my ex’s family that the click it or ticket law shouldn’t exist, to let Darwinism do its work. Ex’s father’s parents died in a single car accident because they weren’t wearing seatbelts. Things got awkward for me real fast.

Also got to sit and listen to them debate a bunch of racist shite about a minority group before reminding them that my sister-in-law is of that minority group. Things got awkward for them real fast that time.

For the second year in a row, and the third in the past four years, I’ve tried and failed to ignore college football from abroad. This year I’m doing it from Madrid. If there are any other Madrileños out there trying to watch games, hit me up!

Feels like I’m about the only LSU fan who doesn’t mind day games, so I can watch at a reasonable hour

The vitriol in this thread is nauseating. John McCain served his state and his country for decades. I disagree with the man on how to run a government, but he deserves respect, even from dissidents.

Sounds like you feel entitled to having a football player stay with the team you like, even if it’s not in that player’s best interest.

Also sounds like you’re letting a 19 year old playing an amateur sport get to you. Snowflake.

This is fun!
