You know a guy named Jan that lives in Alpine by any chance?
While the border in Big Bend is pretty inhospitable, I’ve seen quite a few suspicious vehicles driving those 4WD roads in the middle of the night, and there have been a few unsolved murders as well. Probably drugs and not illegals, though. Funding more enforcement isn’t a bad idea.

look up the return of the black bear to big bend natl park.
Not a fan of the bears. Go to Yellowstone or Glacier if you want bears.
The park was a much better place to visit pre the bears return. They were effectively gone for almost a hundred years.
Bears offer no redeeming benefits to this park except for the opportunity to sell Big Bend bear related t-shirts and the like.
After their “migration” into the park, the Park Service put up hundreds of ugly bear boxes in every campsite, and started levying hefty fines for leaving food items visible in your vehicles or on picnic tables for even the briefest periods of time. The bears quickly became a nuisance , wrecking things. Who would have thought?
Do cockroaches and rats migrate into a house? Same thing. They should have trapped them and sent them elsewhere when they first arrived back in the 80’s. Place hasn’t been the same since. The ranchers of the area back in the day eradicated them for a reason.

Did this years ago to an igloo. The ice chest is falling to pieces, but the leather hinges are doing fine.

What? Kids with iPads/switches etc to entertain them and headphones are the most well-behaved least disruptive kind.
The whole “no screens” thing is nonsense. Took my gameboy everywhere back in the day.
Screens are for lazy parents who can't be bothered teaching their children the do's and don'ts of being out in public, and a good way to handicap your kids later in life, because they never learn the proper way to interact with others.
It is much healthier for kids to learn early, what good behavior in public is. However, that involves a lot of work that many of today's self centered parents seem to be shirking.

Yeah, but now you get to cut out the pesky middle man and have all the fun yourself.

Agreed. These people would shite their pants with no law enforcement, which is what they seem to salivate over for some reason. They throw the term "bootlicker" around about as often as angry Gen Z'ers throw around "Boomer"
.
Just think -Someone steals your weedeater, just shoot 'em. They disrespect you on the streets, just shoot 'em. They take the last crab leg from the buffet, put a cap in their arse. That would be awesome, right?
No one to come and put you in jail, so basically no laws. A lawless "civilization."
We would either have a better "no frick around" society, or the nightmare of pure anarchy. But hey, it's totally worth that gamble to get rid of the LEO's, right?
The world would be their oyster. Or they could be dead.
Used cook sausage patties while camping using one of those flip grills over the fire. It was good.

They were a nuisance and parents should be ashamed of themselves for bringing their babies into public.....until i had kids and I decided i was the idiot before kids.
For the umpteenth time, no one is blaming the kids. It's the lazy, self absorbed, non- disciplining parents who are at fault.
Take the kids outside when they become unruly. Correct them and tell them that behavior is not acceptable, and there will be consequences.
We did this dozens of times when we took our kids out to eat. Sure it was a pain in the arse, and made one of us leave a nice dinner from time to time, but it worked. They eventually became well behaved because we worked hard to get them that way.
When strangers tell you how well mannered your kids are, you know you are doing it correctly.
There should be a test you have to pass before some of the parents today are allowed to breed. They are as ill mannered as their kids.
quote:
I’m talking about the kid talking loudly in the restaurant or playing a game with their friend somewhere in public. These kids aren’t causing anybody any problems other than being loud, and I feel like those types of kids used to be accepted by society and now people act like they are horrible or that their parents suck for allowing their kids to be kids
So, does your construct that you are trying to build this morning include little girls who squeal loudly, for no reason, at the top of their lungs, while other patrons are trying to have a nice meal? Because I see that a lot too. People from other tables looking across at each other rolling their eyes after each blood curdling scream.
Meanwhile the parents of the offenders continue to drink their margaritas and laugh and talk among themselves.
quote:
And the people that want to complain about noisy, kids are also the first ones to complain about kids looking at screens too much.
Parent here. Responsible, good parents who raise their kids properly can keep the kids noise level acceptable without handing the kids electronic mind erasers. It involves good rules and even enforcement of those rules. Mom and dad need to pay attention at all times, and not just drink and laugh with their friends, while the kids are running amok, ruining others dining experiences .
Grandma and grandpa have to be on board with what is acceptable behavior too. My mother in law and FIL would have been on our kids asses before we could correct them. That is precisely what is missing today. BTW our kids turned out great, happy and with great jobs.
We never let our kids scream in a restaurant and run under other peoples tables playing chase. I've seen much more of that in the past decade. When you are going out to dinner, people need to understand that their kids can ruin another group of diners night out. I recently saw one brat throwing food on the floor and stomping it into the carpet. The parents were too busy having fun to care.
To not correct your kids wild behavior is selfish and inconsiderate of others who are paying good money for a nice evening.
Good parenting has been done for centuries, but it is apparently a dead art. Really dead.
Just so you know, iPads were never used until recently, and it's just plain lazy.
I have recently encountered some kids who are very well behaved and it was a breath of fresh air. Their parents are responsible, and have worked hard, and it shows.
Exhibit A, folks.
quote:
The CONFIDENCE they are trying n the right is the scariest part
They KNOW they are wrong, but have experienced getting away with shite like this all of their lives, because of who they are. It’s a learned behavior and is rewarded with them having their way more often than not.

I have a big green egg ceramic that works well for what it is. My wife bought a few of their skillets with the waffle texture or whatever... I loathe those things. Always get shite stuck in the little pock marks. Seems a terrible design to me.
This is the Greenpan line of cookware that I'm referring to. Smooth ceramic surface.
Big Green Egg is a whole different company. And the style of pan your wife overpaid for is garbage. Sounds like your wife bought the hybrid "Spectra Gold Thermobond" ceramic cookware.
Hexclad pioneered that type of pan with the waffle texture, and I would't own what your wife bought, or a Hexclad, or the Tiama titanium pans with their uneven texture to hold oil droplets that are often passed off as "nonstick", because they aren't. Look at the reviews of these items on Youtube to see how poorly they perform and hold up.
Speaking of Tiama pans, don't fall for the hype about Tiama titanium cutting boards, unless you are willing to spend all your time resharpening your knives. Contrary to their company hype, the dull the crap out of them. They use peoples fear of micro plastics and wooden cutting boards and bacteria to sell those knife destroying monstrosities. And none of that merchandise is cheap, either.
