Great last-second grab by Mulkey to round out the 2025 class and provide quality depth in the frontcourt, solidifying the frontcourt for the future so there won't always be a portal panic thing at the last moment like this year, assuming everyone stays. Three good young players in Knox, Koval, and Yarnevich. Along with Joyner, already able to matchup better physically down low with Texas, UCLA, Uconn, and South Carolina than last year, despite losing Morrow.

It still would be nice to have another quality post player to put us on equal footing this year with the other elite programs down low. Regarding the perimeter game, guards and wings, LSU is superior to anyone else this year, and that includes depth.

Any international targets that you might be aware of- like Awa Fam?
Hines, a combo guard, could pass up Richard at the point, but it's very nice to have two solid backups at point guard.

Koval and the coming frontcourt

I believe Kate Koval will be better than a lot of people think. I just watched her highlight reel from this season, and while you don't see any of the bad stuff in these reels, I was impressed with how well she played against big-time competition like UConn, Texas, South Carolina, USC, Duke, and TCU. She was blocking shots, grabbing rebounds, and scoring inside against accomplished bigs like Oldacre of Texas, Sarah Strong of UConn, Iriafen of USC, etc. She looked very active and aggressive, fighting for position offensively and defensively. No fear. She looked like she enjoyed contact and loved to block shots. She also showed very good low post moves and a sweet mid-range shot. I wonder why she didn't get more minutes down the stretch for Notre Dame.

Judging from highlights, Amaya Joyner is a brawler who'll win plenty of physical matchups down low. She's strong and seems to love the contact and rebounding. It seems like she might be our version of Draymond Green down low. She can handle the ball well, and both she and Koval can run the floor well for their size.

Grace Knox, on the other hand, is on a whole different level both athletically and skill-wise. She's also very aggressive. I expect Knox to be in the starting lineup by the end of the season, if not earlier.

That gives LSU three aggressive frontcourt players already, definitely an upgrade from last season when they had only one, Morrow. I wouldn't call Smith, Wolfenbarger, Del Rosario, or Bartlett aggressive. None seemed like they really wanted to mix it up down low. Smith would do it because she had to- not because she wanted to. I saw Smith as more of a skill player down low- that was her game. Still she's a big loss because she's a good player who would give her best, especially against stronger and larger players. Due to injury, we never even saw her reach her top potential that she was flashing before she got hurt.

The downside is that with frontcourt players who like to mix it up and block shots like the three above, there's always a good possibility of foul trouble. This is huge when you consider that this coming year South Carolina, Texas, UConn, and UCLA will all have a ton of quality physical depth down low. I see Joyner as the most likely to get into foul trouble because she will now be facing better athletes in the SEC.

So LSU needs at least one more competitive post player, albeit for a few minutes per game, in order to "hold serve" when one of the above is in foul trouble so that LSU's unmatched perimeter game (best in the country starters and bench) can continue to assert itself. They need four post players to practice, anyway. A fifth would be good for injury purposes.

I realize that pretty much everyone already has this same opinion, but I was encouraged by watching the highlights of the transfers and newcomers.

Williams UCONN recruiting video

Posted by goldenmoment on 4/30/25 at 7:58 pm
This video https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/other/how-uconn-secured-the-future-of-their-program-with-serah-williams/vi-AA1DLeLb#detailsLINK was posted two days before the Serah Williams commitment announcement. Seems like somebody knew something at least a week ago. It would have taken a little time to produce this and gain approval before posting it. The usage of past tense, as if "she'd already committed," explains the strange silence around her visit, etc., polar opposite to her LSU visit.

Maybe her "agent" used LSU to up the bag since it seems she's always wanted to go to UCONN (attending their games, etc.) Even UCONN fans thought it strange and premature that this video was posted prior her "announcement" of the commitment, but possibly the commitment was already made. Note the very long time it took between LSU's visit and UCONN's, giving UCONN a lot of time to counter LSU's strategy, or get the extra money. I realize this is speculation, but you never know in the recruiting world.

re: Okot

I was wondering because South Carolina was already loaded in the frontcourt with Daumba, Tac, and Watkins (if recovered) at the 5 and Edwards and Kitts at the 4.

Okot

Does anyone know why LSU wasn't a bigger player for Okot? Was LSU not that interested since they put all their eggs in the Serah Williams basket?

Maybe the heightened publicity of LSU's recruiting of Williams made Okot and other bigs in the portal back off. I don't believe I've seen close to that level of recruiting publicity for any other player in the women's portal this spring.

Does anyone have any info on whether or not it was a "Serah Williams or bust" type of approach from LSU? Hopefully not. I would have to think that a recruiting whiz and 40-year championship coach like Kim would have a good backup plan.

Just asking.
Guess what? Jill Schneider, the coach of Chavez's Monterrey High team, was the coach for Chavez's team at the Jordan Brand Classic.
Well, depending on how you define point guard, to me she looked more like one than anyone else on the floor other than Chavez, and she subbed in an out with Chavez throughout the game. The former WNBA announcer called her a point guard and floor general, and Bella seems to be one who actually WANTS to get her teammates involved, looking for their potential openings first and anticipating where they'll be for a pass before looking to jack up her own shot. That made her stand out from everyone else in this all-star game where all anyone else did was just jack up shots as soon as they touched the ball so they could get their own, especially Chavez.

However, if Bella had a clean look she didn't hesitate to shoot which I really liked because the past two years we've had point guards who looked gun shy to shoot with MW and FJ on the wings. And Bella was a sniper. Didn't take it to the hoop that much. She's quick but not sure she's lightning fast like some others.

She is tenacious on defense, and the announcers praised her for that because they watched a lot of film on her and the other players. She held her own defensively in this game, even against Zakiyah Johnson, her future teammate who is three inches taller, down low. It should also be noted that the few times that Chavez didn't jack up a shot she was being guarded by Johnson who is very quick and tall and cut her off, forcing her to pass.

As point guards go, as good as Chavez is, one difference I observed is that Bella, an excellent passer, WANTS to pass the ball when a teammate is open, whereas Chavez, an electric scorer who sometimes makes highlight reel passes, DOES NOT WANT to pass the ball, even with teammates open. You could see the frustration on her face when she had to give it up. Chavez is an incredible talent, but watching this game made me see how she's definitely a "me first" player who loves the stats. I can see why the other girls didn't want to play with her. Grace Knox and Divine Bourrage on her team barely got to touch the ball when they were open. I'm even more excited about the future after watching this game.
Well, in this game she looks like a point guard. She definitely looks to pass first compared to the other ones. She's not hesitant when she has an open shot, however, which is good.
Bella Hines is showing that she's definitely a great future point guard for LSU at today's Jordan Brand Classic. As the announcers described, she's a true point guard, the best floor general they've seen, and her passes and floor vision are really eye-popping. She's really the ideal fit as far as LSU is concerned- a point guard who is "pass first" who can run the offense at a fast pace, can drive in the paint and hit floaters, and is lights out from beyond the arc. Watching her play makes me feel so much better about LSU's talent at the point guard position going forward. She seems to be Kim's type of point guard, and of all the kids playing in this all-star game, the least selfish of all of them along with Grace Knox. Heck, she might even start this year.
Who plays point guard from this group- Divine, Zakiah, and Bella?

Samaya Smith?

For those of you “in the know”, how long will it be before Samaya returns to game action? Thought I’d see her last night. LSU will need her down low before long. Thanks.

He's gonna have the big jumbo defensive tackle guy Pegues on the goal line take the ball like he's gonna run and then throw a jump pass.
You have to pay respect to the 1972 drive for 80 yards where LSU beat Ole Miss (LSU was unbeaten at the time) on the final play of the game when Bert Jones threw a TD pass to Brad Davis as time ran out and Tiger Stadium shook big time! The Tigers converted on 4th and 10 several times in that drive, if I remember correctly. So an incredible amount of drama on each snap.

This was the "Turn Your Clock Back One Second" game where Ole Miss fans went nuts on an incomplete pass from Jones to Jimmy LeDoux in the end zone where the play started with 4 seconds on the clock. Everyone thought the game was over, but one second still showed!!!

Maybe most on this board were too young to remember or not born yet, but I was there, and this was the peak years of the LSU-Ole Miss rivalry, so the victory was so sweet!
Is he related to John Dillinger?
If you check the On3 team rankings for 2025 football recruiting updated last night, LSU ranks third nationally even with 5-7 less recruits than most everyone else. To your point, of ALL schools LSU ranks first in average NIL per recruit at $211,000, at least 10,000 more than the second place school, Ohio State. Even better LSU has the top average ranking per recruit. So in football at least I’d say LSU is willing and able to spend the money, but they’re probably just more selective.
I like Blair overall, but I think baseball is his weakest sport. Not from a knowledge standpoint, but in quickly letting the listener know the result of a play. Today I was listening on the radio, and he called the play where the LSU CF misplayed a ball and it got over his head. And he never told us what base the runner wound up on. It seemed like several minutes later that we found this out.

Also, lots of dead air. You can expect some in baseball with its pace, but it seemed like an excessively long amount of dead air plenty of times before anything was said. Especially for a championship game broadcast, you want that energy and drama.

Would have been nice to have had a former player as an analyst from pitch to pitch to liven up the broadcast. Franques basically provides stats and player bios, really more information than analysis. I like his info, but it would be nice to have an analyst as the No. 2 guy.

Chris Blair is really spot on, detailed, and energetic in basketball. I kind of think that's his best sport.

How about Liatu King from Pitt? I think she’s still available. All-ACC with 18 double doubles.

What’s the matter with Reese?

She’s looked uninspired the last two games. Doesn’t look like herself with the usual fire.
