quote:I have done my share of criticizing McMahon but this year I decided to concentrate on the players and trying to enjoy the games. Was McMahon responsible for PV hitting all those threes? We had a hand in their face on many of them and they made shots all night long that would have been in the 8 to 9 difficulty range. When you're hot, you're hot. Basketball is much more about individual talent than football. John Woodward is recognized as the greatest college coach ever but without Walt Hazzard, Gail Goodrich, Jabbar, etc. he would not have won nearly as many titles and games. So is MaMahon a great coach? No. But can you blame everything that happens in a game on him? No. Leave it at that and let's try and win as many games as we can and celebrate those that we do, even if we don't play to our potential every time out.
Expected to heap praise on the coaches because of the “comeback”. I’m sorry but considering that I have standards for this program, that game was not good enough for me.

I look at this team and I want to hope we can surprise some folks but the realist in me says it will be tough sledding. The key at this point is inside scoring, inside defense and rebounding. Three point shooting is not going to win many games for us as we only hit a third of those attempts. Nwoko and Sutton are going to have a lot on their shoulders. Tamba has proven to be a good all around player but he has to take on more of the offense when they are doubling McKinnon and Nwoko.
We can't allow so many offensive rebounds and putbacks and need more of those ourselves. Nwoko is key and has to stay out of foul trouble. Bench has proven to be ineffective and the starters will probably be very tired toward the end of the season. I still think we have the talent to pull some upsets but can't afford to lose any games we are favored in.

If you have YouTube TV, then you also have ESPN and can watch it on that channel SEC plus.

So this is Mac's first year and I must have just imagined all those bad teams and bad losses I had to sit through for three years? With the portal, every year is a rebuilding year for the teams that aren't elite. Even Duke has to rebuild as their one and don's head off to the NBA.

I'll stick with 11-7. Should be good enough to get in tournament.

Love the win! Anytime you are heavily favored but the other team is shooting lights out, it feels great to rally and pull it out. Basketball usually has a lot more upsets.than football to smaller schools. Sure this team still has problems and we have no idea how many SEC games we can win, but every win adds to my enjoyment of the season, We do know that depth we thought we had is not so deep and while we can score, the defense and rebounding is not where it needs to be. But I will be there for every game, win or lose and just hope we will be competitive.

I know you remember this, that when we had Chris and Shaq, we played Georgetown in the Superdome in New Orleans. Attendance was over 68,000 and was the largest crowd for college basketball at the time, maybe still is.

So you are telling me a 6'9" player, in high school, was playing on the perimeter? So what happened to his outside shot, his dribble/drive ability, passing and everything else a player has to have to play that position? I see him pass up 10 to 15 foot jumpers all the time.

How about when Miller icomes in for Nwoko? Somehow they are playing about the sane number of minutes. I know Nwoko getting into foul trouble has something to so with it but not all. Have you noticed that almost every time Nwoko comes out that Mac has something to say to him but Miller seems to lead a charmed life despite the fact that he does almost nothing. Tonight he was totally non aggressive, missed free throws when he was fouled and added nothing to the offense.

quote:Yeah I called it perfectly and said Mac would have to motivate them to hustle after the big win last game. I got downvoted by 4. Don't know what they were thinking but we did not play defense or rebound like we should have. I guess the team thinks we can outshoot everyone and forget about the other parts of the game. In answer to another post, no we didn't set a record for turnovers and in fact had a small number but Thomas did have 3 which is bad for him.
That was probably the worst basketball of McMahon's tenure in the second half. Team did not look engaged at all.
And Sutton was good on three pointers as well as McKinnon. The rest of the team, especially King and Thomas, not so good. So now we have another sleeper coming up in Praire View. A team supposedly worse than Southeastern. Is Mac going to be able to wake them up and have them hustle and play defense or will it be another much closer than it should have been game?

quote:It is pretty obvious when he hasn't gotten in a game that this is CMac's plan. At this point we have no idea how good Gillhool is. The problem is the portal. When you don't play a kid who has worked hard to become a good basketball player, it will take some of his confidence away. He wants to prove himself so he starts to think he needs to go somewhere else and make a new start.
if gilhool doesn't get in a game soon seems like he should redshirt.

It will be interesting to see how they perform coming off of their biggest win and best played game of the season and then playing a creampuff that they should blow out by a large number. This is where coaching really comes in play and he has to motivate them to take the game serious and play at a reasonable energy and effort level. If you let a team lapse into bad habits then they will carry them forward to other games.

It was obvious that Les had mental problems while coaching LSU. I just wrote it off to incompetent coaching and that he wasn't the sharpest nail in the barn but it could have been some kind of disease also. His terrible time management could have been caused by some kind of neural problem where he was momentarily confused. Likewise the time he ran to the wrong side of the field coming out of the tunnel to start the game. Not to mention his having problems speaking in complete sentences and abruptly switching to different topics.

quote:NO, no, no, stop. Wade is long gone, is it four years?, not coming back. If you want to compare McMahon to other coaches, pick one in the SEC. That is his competition. How has he done compared to them? Do you think he can out coach them this year?
While Will Wade drops to 7-4 last night; the epitome of brutality

I think we are definitely seeing patterns to success for this team.
1. Nwoko has to stay out of foul trouble in the first half. Mac will sit him everytme apparently, after he gets two fouls.
2. Mackinnon and Sutton are the keys. They play well, we play well. Thomas has to have somewhere to pass too other than Nwoko.
3. The team has to quit putting the burden so much on Thomas and produce offense on their own. So many times Thomas passes to a player who makes no move to score or put pressure on the defense and they just quickly pass it back to Thomas, which does nothing except take time off of the shot clock.
4. Tamba has to realize he can be a part of the offense other than on rebounds and fast breaks. He is a great athlete and should be able to drive more and either kick out or shoot.
If we can repeat these patterns for success, it is possible that we can repeat this SMU victory against some SEC teams who are expecting the doormat of the conference.

quote:Given this scenario, I am sure there are at least 50 other QB's who could be great also. These days, you would be lucky to get even two of those. Especially the part about time to grow. If you try to salt away a good QB by redshirting or whatever, his agent will have him in the portal before you can blink.
If you actually gave this kid time to grow, elite players around him, and a coach that knows how to develop QBs, I still think this kid could be great.

Yes, once again we are told we have players recruited for their shooting and outside shooting won't be a problem this year. And yet it is? How can we consistently get guys that can't shoot consistently? Last year it was Sears who came in with a career over 50% from three and shot less than 30% with us. Only Carter was over 30% and our only consistent shooter. This year it is McKinnon in a seemingly endless slump and sinking lower ever game. We don't coach players up, we give them a place to come and fail. King doesn't even attempt many shots when he comes in. Why are all our shooters so timid and afraid to shoot? Time and time again we see them pass up relatively good shots, until late in the shot clock we shoot a desperation one. Even our big men under the basket hesitate before going straight up for a shot or dunk?

Yes they beat us in every aspect. Field goal percentage, three percentage, rebounding and free throw percentage. The only thing we beat them in was steals and fewer turnovers.
What mystifies me is how every year we recruit guys that have great three point percentages with prior teams but are abysmal when they play here. The latest example is McKinnon. How does a guy who shot over 50 per cent the previous years, come here and shoot 0-5 in a crucial game? And boy it seemed he shot a lot more than 5? For the year he is a little over 30% which just doesn't cut it. His replacement King is no better and contributes little. Isn't it time to give Zippur a chance? Without a good three point shooter in the modern game you are at a big disadvantage.

Way too early to be talking about tourney team. Enjoy the wins if they come.
Considering how few we have had to celebrate in the last few years. Getting Thomas has made this team much better. He is like a coach on the court which is exactly what we need. Reese didn't look too bad but he does like so many and dribbles at the top of the key way too much. Thomas comes down and immediately gets everyone moving and into the offense. They know if they hustle and get in good position Thomas will get them the ball.

I'm going to guess 11-7 in conference. Another fun game that showed how dominant our talent can be when things go right.
