re: Curtis Givens now entering portal

The thing Chest really lacked, as did most of the team, was in basketball iq.
Bad decisions, trying to do too much (driving and dribbling), losing his cool and disappearing in the big games against superior big men. Not sorry to see him go. We will actually get to see on this one since we will be playing his team.

I don't know what others said about Givens but I couldn't believe he was the best guard we could get seeing as how his stats were very bad. This was supposed to be because his teammates were so good that he didn't get to shoot but in the long run he was just a guy that didn't have SEC talent.
What's really sad is that from now on, LSU will be a part of his career he is ashamed of and won't talk about, even though it was a place that really loved and supported him. It will always be one of the saddest parts of LSU basketball history.
I'm sure Van Lith wasn't excited. The reason she didn't do well at LSU was because Mulkey made her dump the ball down to Reese at every opportunity. How many shots she gets to take will be a big deal and of course how many she makes.
Ok, I can agree to disagree and I still haven't called anyone on here an idiot, ignorant, etc.

What's really funny is everyone that thinks I am some kid who didn't know any of those names you posted. I'm 77 and when I was in high school, Bob Petit lived three blocks over and one of my friends mowed his grass. We just got off on the wrong foot and I should take blame for not being more clear about what I was saying. But I definitely know about Russell and the Celtics and Willis Reed and the Knicks, etc. They didn't even televise any NBA games in Baton Rouge in those days but I still remember laying on my bed listening to Petit and Cliff Hagan on the radio when they were with the St. Louis Hawks.
Madking the only person calling people names and ranting is you. Look in the mirror and find a little self awareness. And you missed my point completely, which is not how many players were born in Louisiana, especially since almost of them either left the state before high school or played before the year 2000, but the fact that the current players in high school are not getting the training they need to be great basketball players. There are exceptions of course, but for the most part this is true and needs to be addressed. If we had a private basketball academy school like a lot of states do then we would maybe have a chance.

Players born in Louisiana
Bill Russell
Karl Malone
Elvin Hayes
Clyde Drexler
Willis Reed
Bob Petit
Joe Dumars
Orlando Woolridge
De’Aron Fox
Antwan Jamison
Danny Granger
Rashard Lewis
Robert Parish
Paul Millsap
Greg Monroe
Reggie Lewis

And only one of those played at LSU

And only about 10% of them played high school basketball in Louisiana.

Plus, basketball is MASSIVE in Memphis
Yes you are right, which only supports my point that it isn't here. Everyone has missed my main point which is that Louisiana high school basketball is not on par with a lot of other places. And for those that say it is only a matter of population then how do you explain the incredible number of great football players that we produce?
Bill Russell left LA at an early age and spent his school years in California, including two national championships at San Francisco. None of his basketball prowess had anything to do with Louisiana. Do you guys seriously want us to recruit mainly from Louisiana and not try to snag great players from other states and countries?
And yet Maine with less population than Louisiana produced the number one player in College. All of you seem to have missed the GREAT part in my original post.
That's kind of my point although Tennessee and Georgia are not that far ahead of us in population.
quote:

You might have noticed UH had at least two key players from LA.
Both Hayes and Drexler played all of their high school ball in Texas.
That's my point, not that we don't have raw talent but for whatever reason they don't get the training they need. Madking's list is all players from before the year 2000. How many Louisiana high school players made either high school or college All American since 2000?
So all they had to do is be born in Louisiana, and somehow that immediately gave them basketball talent. How many of those players actually developed their talent in the state of Louisiana
The top states producing basketball players are as follows:

1. Texas
2. California
3. Indiana
4. Illinois
5. Georgia
6. Florida
7. New York
8. North Carolina
9. Maryland
10. Tennessee

You can, of course, come up with different lists but you will never see Louisiana in any of them. Why is this?

Relatively small population, poor state that doesn't invest money in high school infrastructure, not enough good coaches at any level and most important total emphasis on football. It is almost impossible to be a great two sport star at the college level, especially if those sports are football and basketball. Tre Dez Green being the latest example. If a great athlete such as Tre Dez comes along, the emphasis is always on football. He actually enjoyed basketball more but probably got good advice that he could be a pro football player easier than a basketball one.

So our next basketball coach should not be a local product who emphasizes recruiting in state. We need someone who can get players from anywhere, including overseas.
quote:

The athlete is considered greedy because they are trying to negotiate for more money on their behalf. But the institutions, colleges, owners are not considered greedy when they try to keep as much of the revenue for themselves?
Ok, you got us. There is lots of blame and greed to go around. Nevertheless, two wrongs still don't make a right. I would like the NCAA money to go to players who were disabled while playing, or free gyms and recreational facilities for towns who can't afford it.
quote:

She wasn't able to accept money for the photo shoots she did.

There is no way this girl did free photo shoots. What possible reason would she have for doing so? If you mean her sister taking photos and film of her doing cartwheels on the beach, then this is not exactly a professional photo shoot and would have only earned her what social media paid for it. Was she getting social media money prior to enrolling at LSU? If so how much? That would be an indicator as to how much she lost out on her first year at LSU. As far as I know she was getting NIL money for the last four years.
The very fact that they are giving them retro payments is remarkable and then she isn't satisfied with the amount. Why didn't she retain a lawyer from the very first? She certainly has enough money for it. If it is a class action suit then everyone knows the lawyers get the money. Apparently she did not file a separate suit just for her. And who is paying this retro money? So weird a world we live in with justice being a word no one really believes in or the roofers and ditch diggers of the world would get a lot more money.

You'll never convince me it wasn't the haircut that got McMahon the job. We needed a Mr. clean and there he was. The fact that there was very little basketball IQ under that haircut was not considered.
Even with a great point guard, Chest is not getting you many points. He doesn't have the footwork, fitness or touch to get you baskets. He proved it over and over by driving to the basket and then not having a clue what to do but jump and try to dunk. There are a lot of players in the SEC who can stuff those kind of shots.
You need a mix of high school and transfer portal. The problem with the portal is the stars that you win championships with will not be entering. You will get bench warmers, players with attitude problems, players who want more playing time and every once in a while a hidden gem. Freshman recruits problems are they all want to go to prominent basketball schools which LSU is currently not. How quickly they adapt to the college game is also a factor. Some jump right in and others need a season to settle in.

So let Coach Mac throw money at who he wants and let the rest of us hope he makes good decisions. But with all of the above it will be very hard to get a competitive team. I suspect we will be marginally better by three or four games but nothing spectacular.
