I agree with that. You just dont see kids out kicking the ball around or in pick up games in any empty lots or fields or where ever they can find to play. Not on weekends, not after school, not in the summer, almost never. Im sure coaching is a great help but if your not out playing all the time I dont think you are going to become a great player. There are skills that need to be there that coaches just cant coach. A basketball coach cant coach a basketball player to have a great shooting touch with the ball, only a lot of time, a lifetime, spent with the ball in your hands taking shots can develop that. I never played soccer but i don't see how it can be different.
These skills I see in the world cup dont look coached to me, they look more like a lifetime of constant practice and playing.

to be fair, I dont see kids out anywhere playing any kind of sport. Hell the parks dont even have basketball courts any more. WTF. They have a park by my house where they had a no soccer playing sign, they did take it down, but put a whole bunch of little 2-3 foot mounds all over it just to make sure you cant play sports in the park . Its fricken retarded.

Don't city recreation departments offer free youth soccer? The same as they do with baseball basketball leagues. I see organized youth soccer games being played all the time in Lafreniere Park usually being coached by some spanish guy who knows how to play soccer.

On the side note, it really doesn't help. Soccer development when signs are put up in neighborhood parks saying no soccer playing allowed.

The only time I watch soccer is during the world cup, and it's awesome. Yesterday's games Mexico Vs England Brazil Vs Norway
were off the chain, intense and awesome. Round of sixteen just upped the intensity by a lot. I can't wait for today's games. I'm pretty sure I enjoy the World Cup more than any other sporting event . At the same time, I just can't see myself watching an MLS game or some european LEAGUE game. but at the same time, I can maybe see myself maybe checking out a local semi pro, new orleans jesters?, match, maybe becoming a fan of that.

Also 2 more that would really be great changes and add much more excitement to the game :

1. just get rid of the offside rule. What s that about anyway. Basketball doesnt have off sides and it seems to work fine.

2. Also I have seen so many balls hitting the goal posts each game that if you just widened and raised the hieght of the goal posts by six inches all the way around you could probable add 3-4 points to every game.
