So they want to be school of choice in Rapides Parish but not play select? Yeah, that dog ain't going to hunt.

What made me know it's about getting out of select, is that it's not just ASH's district rep who presented the motion. Tioga's was also in on it and they definitely want out of Select Division I too, being that they are really a 4A school but got lumped in to Select DI by count.

It's all a moot point for Tioga anyway. ASH and Pineville are 5A. Peabody will be 5A next cycle. When they stop allowing kids to ASH or Pineville because they are overcrowded, they will be at Peabody or Tioga. They will all be 5A soon enough, even though Tioga will do everything they can to avoid that too.

Charles Smith won't allow it.

Nothing is allowed to take any spotlight from basketball. Lord forbid a basketball player want to play football, he'd have to miss fall workouts with the basketball team. There have been a number of extremely skilled athletes that were strongly encouraged to not play football. There have also been a number of extremely skilled basketball players zoned for Rapides that somehow end up on campus at Jones Avenue... well before open enrollment was a thing. It's funny how that seemed to happen.

1. Yes, he is the reason football can't get where they need to go and as long as the principal is positioning his son to succeed him (he's now asst. athletic director), nothing will change.

2. It's less about who's playing and not and much more about the money. Football used to hold its own on the budget, even when we were bad but Smith was always the AD. The neglect to one program over the other was obvious.

3. He's always let kids play more than one sport. There are plenty that played football and baseball too throughout his tenure. What he does do...is not start them or cut minutes, because they aren't there for everything in the summer and fall. Not always, but most of the time.

4. Been a thing said for years that we got kids we shouldn't have, yet, I think we never got sanctioned by LHSAA until 2021 or 22 and that's with the LHSAA having gone through the entire athletic dept previously on multiple occasions. But tell the truth, all the while, it was kids that should have been at Peabody for football, that were at ASH and Tioga before open enrollment. It happened all over Rapides. If the RPSB and LHSAA overlooked it for some, why not others?
I posted the story on another forum but, they tabled the motion at the School Board Meeting yesterday. Its going to come back up but probably in some other form.

Honestly, if you ask me, it's not about dismantling ASH football it's actually an attempt to help them. Even though it's a complete non starter because of the LHSAA...it's an idea about getting Rapides out of being Select and in turn, ASH, Tioga and potentially Pineville out of Division I Select.

I want you to all see RPSB is thinking somewhat athletically and understand, they are attempting to put together a Cenla 5A district. ASH would be the biggest beneficiary of the weakest district in 5A and getting them out of the select bracket would give them a run at a title almost yearly while Bachman is there. Its why they have been putting so much money in athletic facilities over the last few years aside from pure necessity.

coaching is not the issue

using her bench is the main criticism you can have

But the bench, is on the coach if you haven't developed it or don't trust it and when you literally don't play kids against good comp, they won't know what that is when they see it. Richard, Del Rosario, Sheppard and Gilbert should have been getting 8-12+ piece against the lower level SEC teams, then in games like this, in the SEC and NCAA tourney they have a better chance if they step in. At this point, they are unprepared to help so you are trying to steal minutes. That is risky and its on coaching.

I'm surprised she doesn't get more criticism. Yes, she won a title but that isn't the current team, who is good enough to win but need to be led to it. She has had 1 major thing from a coaching decision standpoint that has shown its head multiple times and it's her preference for seniority.

Richard is a better pg right now than both Poa and Day-Wilson but Mulkey won't give her the minutes. Yes, she will make a freshman mistake here or there but Poa and Day-Wilson make the same freshman mistakes, multiple times a game as seniors.

She also needs to put Flau'jae on the bench when she starts making bad decisions. She feels like she has the greenlight whenever but with 2 other options on the floor as go to's, you get the best shot. She reels Gilbert in this way but won't do it to Flau'jae.

re: Kim’s Rotation

The only problem I have with the rotation is the insistence on Poa. She brings nothing offensively, is turnover prone on offense and really isn't as good on defense as she looks, the charges just make her look good. I've thought Richard has looked better just about every time I've seen her and Miracle is a better defender, honestly, she is our best defensive guard. If she get her offense going, she'd be the starter at the 1.

I like her. Good player. Having said that, she's a ball hog. She's too worried about getting hers. Too many times she refuses to pass the ball to an open player in order to take the shot, especially on fast breaks.

It's called being a go to player. She has the most complete offensive game on this team. Mikaylah can do everything Gilbert can except at the rim finishing.

If this team wants to win, I think Gilbert has to become someone we look for on offense more and Flaujae needs to dig into being the defensive stopper on this team and get her point organically. That feels like when this team is at its best.
They need the posts to step up, they need serious work on off ball defense (too much ball watching and digging down to help for too long) and due to that they have trouble with Princeton style and flex cut offenses. Won't see much of it in SEC play but they need to be ready for it in the tourney. Offensively they can score with anybody. Less fouls and turnovers, they can beat anybody.

same as basketball at Peabody

But we did have Jalen Richard who played for the Raiders for some years, just retired this year. There's always been a few guys in the area that are good enough but didn't get the recognition.

Peabody is trying in football. Harry Coleman is the HC now

I hope we'll be headed in the trajectory ASH is soon. Not just open enrollment, but the change of Bolton to an academic K-12 and re-route of most to Peabody will push us and maybe Tioga to 5A next cycle. Couple that with the coaching changes at Pineville and Tioga this off-season, we might start pulling some talent like ASH did from our side of town.

Wouldn't say good with it but we definitely didn't earn it either.

re: 5 Million NIL offer

That's the worth of the package for his career, not 1 year or 1 lump sum. its apparently the same one that is comparable to what LSU offered, not a different one.
Louisiana K-12 so far behind in education they couldn't get to this on the High School Senior level, let alone before that. Stuff like this is why Louisiana will stay at the bottom of the barrel nationally.

I think the larger problem is folks want a big name but I think Mulkey and crew learned their lesson last year with that. It needs to be fit, not name. I knew of HVL's talent last year but I was big on Jayda Walker and was really hoping LSU went after her cause she was the right fit, a true pg who could score if need be and she was a huge part of Baylor going deep again this year.

All 3 guards mentioned have their positives and negatives, but none of them actually play the 1 the way Mulkey has traditionally looked for. If that were the case Maddie Scherr wouldve been a great fit aside from only having 1 year left. So if its one or multiple of those 3, we'll still be adjusting someone to the spot in some way, unless the offense changes and I highly doubt that.

mk and flau'jae own those spots.

Johnson and Williams are your 2 and 3, not 1 and 2.

Nye would be a great fit from a scoring/outside shooting perspective but, not the greatest ball handler, not the greatest on ball defender, but she does hustle.

My bigger issue is, will Kim adjust the offense she runs. She's still running offense that Hogg ran when she was at Tech playing, essentially. Though skilled bigs will always dominate the women's game, its not as much as it was then. Everybody on the floor has to be a threat and just penetrating and kicking isn't enough. There needs to be more pick and roll, pick and pop, cutting, side to side action. The offense is too stagnant and each season, I've only seen a couple of things implemented offensively each time when they ran into issues, like the overload play this year. It was a reaction to a loss. We need a new offensive identity based on execution, not only skill.

Do you think Flau’jae wouldn’t be able to play pg?

I was calling for this and HVL to slide to 2 after the first Auburn game. It would have opened everything up. Her ability to drive and kick it to HVL or Williams when the defense gets sucked in. I thought it was a no brainer, have HVL bring it and Flau'jae initiate the O but never happened.

The traditional wisdom is that when a good shooter starts clanging it off the front of the rim it's a fatigue issue. The longer season along with a seemingly signicant weight gain wore her down. But she's going to be a superstar. She has an actual off-the-dribble jumpshot that has never been the norm in WBB. Even Clark has that two'handed push shot.

Jump shot isn't the issue at all. I figured she'd struggle down the end of the year and kind of repeat Flau'jae's sequence at the end of the year last year. Difference is, Mikaylah is already elite, but her work rate isn't and that's a want thing, not a talent thing. Talent is there, but you can't go down and be lost on defense, LSU hardly swtiched everything at any point this year, yet she was constantly lost in transition defense. Let's not forget she didn't get out to Bree Hall on the corner 3 in the SC game at home, that shot won the game.

I saw way to much of her being late, lost or altogether giving a deep shot that I can't say it was all fatigue. For her to get to her potential which is AA, POY, #1 pick, she's gotta want the smoke on offense and defense.

By "cleaning up some things", you mean like developing an offensive game...she has none at this point. She is too slow to be a really good player. Is "cleaning up some things" becoming quicker also?

No, when she slowed down and actually worked back to the basket, it was there but there were very few stretches this year she was a focus and did that. Most of her minutes were to come in, rebound and try to put it back because of all the in close misses by the other bigs.

She needs to 1, learn she doesn't need to block everything and sometimes can just make people shoot over her. 2 is to understand her body and how she's going to get called and learn to play with timing with her reach rather than at the apex. That's most of her fouls.

Offensively, she is a better shooter than what Reese was in the midrange and 3 and never got to show it. I think they need to work to develop it so she can use it, she has time on this now with Jersey coming, cause that's what she does.

Lastly, boxing out, she doesn't. She tries to out height folks to boards, works a lot but another big part of her foul trouble.

Smith being back next year helps ALL of this because her game compliments both Del Rosario and Morrow's better that Reese. You could see it in the games Reese missed.
