Still can’t believe they scratched the perfect closing line for the mini series

I loved Lonesome Dove. Wonderful story with memorable characters and several tense scenes that have stayed with me long after I finished the novel. By the way, I loved Blood Meridian as well

The public will have 45 days to submit a comment on the proposed WOTUS rules once they are officially published in the Federal Register on Thursday. The EPA will then consider whether any comment warrants revisions in the proposed regulations, which would be incorporated into the final version. The Trump administration has not laid out a timeline for putting the new rules into effect.

I equally disagree with both you and the OP

100%! It was so good! I couldn’t put it down. I am tempted to read the other books in the series simply because I’d love to “spend more time with” the characters, despite the fact that they may be disappointing stories compared to LD. Idk!

I finished Lonesome Dove today. It was a triumph! now to figure out my next book…

I wish July Johnson had grown as a person over the course of the story, after having endured so much. He just kind of…stayed the same. That’s nitpicky though. I loved the story overall.

I am chuckling because I finished reading Lonesome Dove today and came to this board to start a thread about how much I enjoyed it.
Like you, I came to read it after Cormac McCarthy left me thirsty for more post Blood Meridian and Border trilogy. I think they just have two different styles. I think they each accomplished different goals and made me think about different things.

This is so interesting. If it was just a maintenance issue, would they be grounding all of these airplanes?
quote:
FAA EXTENDS MD-11 GROUNDING TO DC-10 FAMILY AFTER ENGINE DETACHMENT INCIDENT
The FAA has expanded Emergency AD 2025-23-51—originally issued on November 8, 2025 for all MD-11 and MD-11F aircraft—to now include multiple MD-10 and DC-10 variants, citing shared engine-pylon structures.
This action follows a serious accident in which the left-hand engine and pylon detached during takeoff. The root cause is still under investigation, but the FAA warns the unsafe condition could lead to loss of continued safe flight and landing.
The grounding now covers:
• MD-11 / MD-11F
• MD-10-10F / MD-10-30F
• DC-10-10, -10F, -15, -30, -30F (incl. KC-10A & KDC-10), DC-10-40, DC-10-40F
All affected aircraft are prohibited from further flight until inspections and corrective actions are completed using an FAA-approved method.

quote:I always wonder that when I see really old people walking around. Do they notice it suddenly? Or is there a sort of gradual realization/acceptance? Presumably if you were 40 and then woke up 80 you'd notice the stark difference, but maybe since it happens over time you are just already used to it?
A time will come when you look in the mirror and wonder who that old person is.

The FAA has just issued an Emergency Airworthiness Directive for MD-11 aircraft requiring aircraft inspections and any applicable corrective actions before further flight.

re: Why is it socially acceptable to be “terrible with names”?
Posted by When in Rome on 11/8/25 at 9:34 am to philly444
Usually I forget names because for the first 1-2 minutes of meeting someone new, I am nervous and am hoping to make a good impression. I sort of black out. lol. It's the opposite of not caring...I care too much and become a ball of anxiety before I ease into the conversation. Then I can retain the rest of it just fine. I would like to improve my name-remembering skills. I guess I just need to go into a conversation knowing it's my goal.
I wouldn't assume that the person who forgot your name doesn't care.

I was just reading about the "impossible landing" of flight UA 232 last week (before this crash). I know there is no relation to this crash, but the engine breaking up and severing all hydraulics (and the fact that it was a DC-10, predecessor to MD-11) sort of made me think the crash may be of interest to people following along in this thread. It is a crazy story and such an impressive piloting feat. The whole wikipedia page is worth a read.
