As far as the OOS strategy at Alabama is concerned:

My daughter has been offered the Presidential Scholarship, among others, from UA. As a out-of-stater, from Mississippi, the amount of scholarship money from Alabama really advanced its standing with us. (It is almost double, than what Auburn would typically give as OOS merit.) Even though UA was one of the first schools she applied, it was the scholarship money which made us more strongly consider Alabama as a real option.

Because of this, I have searched for an explanation for the differential. The effort to increase entering freshman scores/GPA at Alabama seemed the most obvious. But, it appears to be making a long play, by potentially increasing the earning (in breadth and depth) of its future alumni base. (There seemingly corresponds the apparent effort to raise funds, by drawing in wealthier OOS students with the ability/desire to pay.)

It was Halloween, 1992. I was in a friend's lake house, just outside of Blairsville, Ga. I remember aiming an AM radio all sorts of ways, slowly, frustratingly, scrolling the static dial, hoping to have that same sound out home radiate from the speaker.
