re: has Best Buy made a comeback?
Posted by WavinWilly on 8/10/26 at 10:10 am to Sam Quint
I also would have expected they were going under several years ago, but they really turned it around.
They optimized their store layout, generally have helpful staff waiting to guide you to the product, and their prices are competitive.
I’ve come to really distrust the Amazon co-mingled inventory, so now if it’s something moderately expensive I buy it either directly from the manufacturer or go to a store like Best Buy.
I can get in and out extremely quickly and efficiently. It’s a good in-store experience now.
And for whatever reason, their large appliance distribution seems to be better than Home Depot or Lowe’s. Refrigerators, deep freezers, washer, and dryer all came from Best Buy for cheaper and faster than anybody else.
It’s quite the comeback story - they could easily have gone the way of Circuit City.

Pouch compression shorts and Vaseline before runs.
re: Have you ever had an allergy test?
Posted by WavinWilly on 7/31/26 at 7:57 am to boosiebadazz
Yea. I'm on allergy shots now and they have made a big difference. My allergies aren't even that bad compared to some. I think after a few years I can allegedly stop the allergy shots and be good to go.
Took me forever to figure out but I was getting vertigo and dizziness, and it turns out it was allergies. Since I have gotten on the shots I'm good to go.
ETA: One of my big allergies is some of the molds and it is a little disconcerting to see what I assume is mold floating in one of the vials I draw my shots from.
ETA 2: If you move, or even change practices sometimes, they will want to redo the allergy test before they give you any shots. I moved from Houston back to SELA and the drs here wanted to redo my tests before they started mixing vials. So just keep that in mind as well.

It's pretty agreed upon that the shoes help you more if you already have an efficient stride that can use them to the maximum advantage. Joe Blow at your local 5k isn't getting as much out of them with his choppy shuffle as a Kenyan
Yea I am just Joe Blow getting back into running. I was curious if the new daily trainers they referred to were really worth it. I'm using Flux Adapt trainers which I really like, but I can see when my weekly mileage gets back up, I could see the shoe not offering enough cushion.
It makes sense, but I didn't realize there was this much controversy over running shoes.

For the daily miles are they just more comfortable and less impact on the runner? Doesn't seem like that big of a deal? Also what are some of those shoes, is it just the two listed in the graphic?

Bingo. All of these groundbreaking releases are 80% or more marketing/hype to keep the liquidity flowing in. They've already shown that once you bill for actual usage, the music stops real fast.

re: USAA Home Owners Insurance
Posted by WavinWilly on 7/21/26 at 9:06 am to TigerBR1111
We used to live in the Houston area so this is probably relative to Texas specifically, but my neighbor owned a roofing business and he said USAA is among the worst to deal with during a claim, from their perspective. He said USAA, and I think State Farm, tried to deny, delay, litigate, and generally jerked the customer around worse than anyone else.
USAA won't offer me coverage here in St. Tammany, but when we were in Houston they were actually 2x to 3x the price of the rest of the competition which surprised me. I use them for car insurance though and they are significantly cheaper than anyone else I have looked at.

Are you happy with the inverters? I'm probably going to have to start replacing my units one at a time in the winter - been reading up on the variable speed inverter units like the Daikin Fit and they sound intriguing for sure.

Yea but if they exist, I’d rather the credits bring jobs to Louisiana instead of other states. We need to keep adding to the momentum anywhere we can right now.
Keep stoking the economy and keep working on the education system (also apparently making great strides).

A little off topic, but since we seem to have a bunch of HVAC guys in here right now - does anyone have thoughts on the new variable speed inverter systems, such as the Daikin Fit? I seem to see so many mixed opinions on both inverter systems and Daikin. Unless I’m misunderstanding something they seem pretty ideal for dealing with our humidity. I have an older home that doesn’t have the best envelope - removing humidity is factoring into my future decisions.

No one will ever be able to make the concept of squatters rights make sense to me. It’s not your property, it’s trespassing, it’s a crime. In Texas I thought you could shoot trespassers after dark.

I don't know much about Soccer, but I don't think the refs had anything to do with that. It reminded me of a few years ago when Vanderbilt was on a little run and that gay little DLineman from Vanderbilt ran his mouth about how Bama was next.... and then Bama beat them 59-0. We just didn't really look like we belonged with Belgium at all.

We have them at the entrances to and inside our gated subdivision. I'm not sure why that was deemed necessary. We live in a very low crime area.
Generally I am not a fan, but I'm also not taking an angle grinder to them in the middle of the night... but I am very uncomfortable with them inside my neighborhood.
