re: Human Gene Therapy
Posted by RockCityHog on 5/22/14 at 10:26 am
We try to be very optimistic about it but knowing its terminal still doesnt help. They made lots of progress and the life expectancy is around 37 now but thats still not good enough for my son! We will continue to fight for him and give him every opportunity we can to live a normal life. We hope he'll be a champion for his own cause as well. Very sorry to hear about your brother. We've met and heard lts of stories from other CF families. It just plain sucks. ANd just because his isnt bad right now doesn't mean it wont get worse.

The other sad part about all this is that large drug companies and research firms are really only focused on a few cases. They dont spend anytime researchiing specific cases like yours, or my son's, who has Cystic Fibrosis. Thankfully the CF Foundation does their own and have made huge strides in the last 10 years. They've isolated the specific protein that causes CF but there are over 1500 different mutations of that protein (CFTR). With only 70,000 people worldwide having CF, its not a very profitable business for the pharm companies.
The future of gene replacement is only going to grow and get better. The things they can do now are amazing. It takes money, and lots of it from idividuals like you and I though. Hang in there!

re: Human Genetic Modification.....Good or Bad?
Posted by RockCityHog on 4/22/14 at 10:28 am
Its huge news for lots of reasons. My son was born with Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic disease, and so far there is no cure. There have been lots of progress made through research and clinical trials but more has to be done. Something like this could fix the genetic mutation and make his CF go away. Carry on scientist! Carry on!

re: "Crying it out" with an infant - OT Parents, how was your first experience?
Posted by RockCityHog on 4/2/14 at 8:02 am
Just now seeing this thread but my wife and I just went through this with our 6 month old. We tried cry it out for about 16 days and it never seemed to work. We held firm with our bedtime routine and everything and were still getting little to no sleep. That all changed one night when i decided to lay the little guy one his belly for the night. WOW!!! Now he sleepo from 7:45-3:30ish, wakes to feed**, then back asleep till 6:30. We quit putiing him in the miracle blanket/swaddle. Now we lay him down partially awak, he rolls around for 3-5 minutes, then he puts himself to sleep. We were at our wits end. Hang in there. This is what worked for us but may not work with every child. Find out what works best for you and your wife and stick to it. Otherwise they'll have you trained forever. Good Luck!
**My little boy was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at 2 weeks old (LINK /). Thats why we still have to nurse him at night to make sure he gets enough food, calories. Otherwise we would let him sleep through the night and i think he would.

re: Will Vanderbilt players go union?
Posted by RockCityHog on 3/27/14 at 9:47 am
Also, Tenner is a right-to-work state which would make it very difficult to form a union. Even if one did form it wouldn't be very powerful becuase it would like the participation needed.
It would affect public universities in the sense that in the eyes of the NCAA all scholarships are equal. What 1 ncaa schol provides its athletes in scholarship compensation, all members would have to provide the same.

re: Ms. State needs to hire Petrino after they Fire Mullen
Posted by RockCityHog on 9/5/13 at 9:48 am
If he does go to Texas you can pretty much guarantee Texas the favorite to win Crystal multiple times. They'll be the next Bama. He won't have to hardly recruit and will get his pick of top tier athletes! Somebody needs to hire him before Texas, Miami, or UCLA gets him.
re: Improper benefits scenario question
Posted by RockCityHog on 8/28/13 at 4:42 pm
I mean its a beautiful scheme. You get said player suspended for the game against your team and get the W, possibly. It wouldn't take much of an investment to do it either. Maybe max $200-$300. You could go over the top if you wanted to. Maybe even go so far as to actually not be a booster at the school you're a fan of, so as to not raise suspicions there.
Improper benefits scenario question
Posted by RockCityHog on 8/28/13 at 4:31 pm
Serious question:
What is to prevent a fan of one school from donating money to another school(becoming a booster)and buying meals for kids on other teams or sending them gifts or cash, and then turning them in for NCAA violations? Then you could possibly get a kid suspended for a couple games or a season. Surely there are some cold blooded fans out there that have thought of this.

re: Have you ever committed an NCAA violation?
Posted by RockCityHog on 8/20/13 at 12:41 pm
I have. I was a season ticket holder and a buddy of mine played for the UofA. I used to give him and some other players rides back to our hometown during holidays and weekends without asking for compensation. My buddy's parents would give me money from time to time but the other 2 never did. NCAA rules on that are pretty ridiculous! That was almost 10 years ago though.

re: Chances of Two SEC Teams Playing Each Other Again in CWS Final?
Posted by RockCityHog on 5/31/13 at 9:52 am
Pretty good. It wouldn't be unreal to think that maybe even 3 could play. USCe, LSU, and Arky all had to play a few years ago I believe. I think its kind of a luck of the draw deal when you get there.
re: UA pitcher charged with kidnapping, battery
Posted by RockCityHog on 4/12/13 at 1:59 pm
This has to be worth a few Fulmer Cup points. At this pace, our baseball team will surpass our football team in a matter of weeks vs. years. WPS!! Our pitchers are crazier and drunker than your pitchers! Suck on that SEC!
re: Arkansas player mistakenly Tweets new Hogs Pro Combat helmet
Posted by RockCityHog on 4/11/13 at 4:22 pm
Seriously? Those aren't any kind of pro combat. thats a design a fan came up with. He has several other renderings of helmets and jerseys and what not. He even had a little article about his designs on Uniwatch.com i think. Although i like them, they are in no way Nike or Pro Combat.
re: Arkansas Formally Enters Fulmer Cup 2013

Forgive my ignorance of the Fulmer Cup rules, but are baseball player arrests allowed to count towards the point totals? If they are then we should be tied with Bama. Moral Victoy Champs!!

This is where my wife works and i envy here. On a dialy basis she rummages through one of a kind JFK pictures, or she catalogs and puts on Babe Ruth Jerseys. I usually gets presents for buddies for their birthday off their PlanetGiant.com website. There are some very cool photos on here.

Nope. Just don't want him leading our program. I'm not a believer that his system is set up for sustaining success. He's a good offensive mind but i don't think he's the right fit. There would be too many fans divided on this for him to be successful here.
