I didn't read it this way at all. Seems much more likely to me, given Brienne's behavior throughout the series, that she wouldn't have sold out Jamie to save herself from the noose. Rather, if her last word was "Arya," then Cat would have let Brienne go try to rescue her. Maybe Pod had to stay behind as a hostage to ensure Brienne's good behavior.

Sure would have been nice to have some more of this story line. He could have cut a few of his dozens of pages of food descriptions to make room.

I'm with SLC on the overall assessment. I thought this was a disappointing effort, and I fear that GRRM has lost his fastball now.
