Why do you have to bring up Jory's death. .. Now I'm sad.
quote:

Right. Married a Tully out of duty. Robb married Jeyne out of a duty to Jeyne to make her honest after getting her preggers.

Both were done out of duty but Ned chose duty to family not to the girl. If Robb had actually "pulled a Ned" as described he would have married a Frey and would still be king of the north.

quote:

Right, but we all know his official story is bullshite, that the bastard child isn't his, and he swore to keep the secret as part of his duty owed to his family.

You think it is bullshite and I agree with you but that didn't stop him from allowing it to tarnish his reputation out of duty to his family.

quote:

Had Ned gotten a girl pregnant prior to being married to anyone, there is no way he wouldn't have married that girl in an attempt to make her honest.

I'm not sure where this comes from except pure supposition. All Ned's actions speak to the opposite. There is no way to know for sure but if you look at what he actually did I think the evidence points in the opposite direction.

Would Ned leave the girl he loved for duty to family? Check
Would Ned raise a bastard? Check
Would Ned consolidate an alliance, destroy a king, and rewrite history as a conquering Stark? Check, check, and check.
quote:

Yep. Exactly. Robb is Ned 2.0. He is truly Ned's child and his mother sat there and watched it all play out again, which is the most tragic part of it.

I see this written a lot but it isn't true. Ned was presented with an almost identical situation prior to marrying Catelyn. He was in love with Ashara Dane but after Brandon was killed by the mad king the alliance with Riverrun depended on his marrying a Tully. His official story even includes a bastard child that may or may not have been from Ashara Dane, yet he married his Tully, sealed his alliance, and won his war; basically everything Robb didn't do.

If Tywin Lannister wants you to do something, it's not exactly a choice.

He was one if the most powerful lords involved in the rebellion against the Lannister backed throne...

Is it possible that Varys knows them because of his connection with the golden company? Daemon Blackfyre was the favorite son. It is possible he had knowledge of Targaryen family secrets. If he told Bittersteel it could be a secret passed down through the Golden Company.

I'm on page 200 of a dance with dragons, where did y'all read about how dayne died?

It is described in Ned's dream in AGOT. If you missed that sequence you should go back and read it. Some of GRRM's best writing imho.

After all of his battles with Divorce, H1N1, and most of all massive chronic Depression, Lynch's 3rd Book in the GB sequence, The Republic of Thieves comes out in October.

I did not realize there was a release date set. That is exciting news. Is there any info out about the story arc/content?

CHAMPIONSHIP
Arthur Dayne "The Sword of the Morning"
v
Robert Baratheon "The Usurper"

I have been going back and forth on this and really think it depends on how they are armored. I finally chose Robert bc I think his style and weapon choice give him an advantage if they are armored in plate, which I assume they would be. If both were in chain mail I would likely choose Dayne but I don't see Robert going that route.

On first read I thought it was excellent but not quite as good as Name of the Wind. I need to reread it though as I was so excited for it's release that I read it in 3 days and likely missed a good bit.

I will also second all those Gentleman Bastards recommendations. I'm currently reading Red Seas Under Red Skies and am enjoying it at least as much as the first read through.

FINAL FOUR
Arthur Dayne v Barristan Selmy
Jaime Lannister v Robert Baratheon
Jaime's scene with Brienne in the baths where he explains why he killed Aerys was some of the best acting I've seen on tv. I really enjoyed that episode. Kissed by Fire S3E5.

ROUND 3
Arthur Dayne v Gerold Hightower
Barristan Selmy v Sandor Clegane
Jaime Lannister v Rhaegar Targaryen
Red Viper v Robert Baratheon (featured fight)
Blackfish was a bamf. Admittedly part of that vote may have come from seeing how close his match with Brienne went, but I think this would be a close fight and one that Blackfish in his prime would have a chance at winning. He was Jaime's hero after the war of the Nine Penny Kings.

ROUND 2
Arthur Dayne v Khal Drogo
Gerold Hightower v Ned Stark
Blackfish Tully v Barristan Selmy
Gregor Clegane v Sandor Clegane (featured fight)

Jaime Lannister v Strong Belwas
Rhaegar Targaryen v Areo Hotah
Bronn v Red Viper
Dragonknight v Robert Baratheon

I can't remember, could Jory have escaped?

Jaime killed Jory in Kings landing when he met Ned in the streets. This was when Ned broke his leg. Jory was awesome. I wish he could have lived.
One of the things I was struck by on the reread was Martin's characterization of Waymar Royce. I think it's indicative of the way the series goes and it's one of the reasons I love ASOIAF so much. Martin sets him up the entire time as an arrogant son of a bitch that feels good to hate. But, when the Others attack, Waymar stands his ground and is really quite heroic in his actions. He's surrounded by an alien enemy, yet he faces them bravely and attempts to buy time for his brothers to escape.
I have never read the books slowly. It will probably be good for me. I haven't posted in an ASOIAF thread in a while. This should be fun.
