Heading to Lyon for the 1st time to visit daughter who is there for a college semester. Planning to stay a week with day trips to Annecy, Dijon, Grenoble. Any other regional suggestions for tourism? Not going to ski on this trip. Any can't miss restaurants in Lyon? Keep hearing that it is a foodie paradise if you like classic French cuisine. Want to get a couple of really great dinners in the trip. Otherwise, I'm a street food, dive joint kind of traveler. Staying in the central city on the peninsula between the rivers. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. This board is my 1st stop for travel info and has done me right in the past!
Personal connection so I'm biased but would say that this was a student run project. This one was quite spicy and definitely their team better bring it after dropping this. The singer was a past student and sang in the 1st hype video 10 years ago so this was like a reboot honoring some of those from that era. Both of these schools are academically excellent and I'd hire nearly anyone who made it through. However, on the athletic side, it has become like universities. After COVID, both schools had upticks in their boarding enrollment and "imported" most of their teams. Quite a large group of Canadians. Peyton Manning's son just enrolled at Baylor. Not a lot of local kids start for either team at this point. But there is definitely D-1 talent all over the field for this game. A Baylor senior administrator was involved in an "alleged" boating DUI a couple of years ago, but somehow the case was "resolved". Last year Baylor had the superior team and dominated the regular season, but lost to McCallie in the state championship while having a 21 point lead at halftime.

Yes, there are some folks that define themselves solely by their graduation from these private schools. I know some folks back home in LA that are the same way (SF Warriors 4-eva!!). It can be insufferable. But there are some exceptional kids that come through. Glad I've had a chance to be around them. The video below was viral and made it around TD this spring. More representative of the character of both these schools - when it is not rivalry week. That being said, good luck to athletes on both sides but Go Big Blue! It's going to be fun!

Below is a statement released by Chevrons CEO. while the geopolitical aspects of a bail out are important, the huge untapped oil/gas resources (estimated equivalent to the Guyana field) are probably the main reason. Also, pushing China out of Argentina where it has been a big financial player makes some sense.

“As one of the largest foreign investors in Argentina, Chevron pioneered the development of the country’s extensive oil and gas reserves in an area called Vaca Muerta with YPF. Chevron applauds the Trump Administration’s efforts to forge closer relations with Argentina and is supportive of the country’s economic reforms. We remain committed to helping Argentina realize the full potential of its energy resources and expect to continue to invest in the country’s economy for years to come.”
2 years ago I drove from Split to Plitvice to Slovenia (all over) to Venice. One day trip drive from Dubrovnik to Mostar. Very easy drive. However, if traveling south bound, I’d ditch the car in Split and use the ferry system to points south. Not sure about the Greece connection though. It is super easy to use the ferries, cabs are cheap, and the islands along the way (Hvar, Korchula) are incredible. You have to reserve spots on the car ferries or show up really early on non-reservation trips if you have a vehicle and this can be somewhat restrictive. When in coastal Croatia, there are even cheap boat taxis to take you to smaller islands or beaches nearby. We did this in Split, Hvar, and Dubrovnik. Having a car is good if you want to travel inland some but if in parts where it is compressed to the coast, a car would just be a hassle.
As a long time Atlantic subscriber (I know, don't criticize too much) this is a shocking event. However the text of the article underplays it compared to the headline. There will be a data set released by the Center for international and strategic studies that was used for this article and that would be interesting. It also narrowly defined attacks as terrorism : “Our research focuses only on incidents of terrorism, which we define as attacks or plots by a nonstate actor attempting to achieve a political end and exert a psychological influence on a broad population.” They did not include riots or other similar acts of violence under their definition of terrorism. So pretty much all the mostly peaceful crap that went down from 2020 -2022 didn’t count even though this period of violence produced the most profound psychological effect for political influence I’ve ever seen. They also classified the Pelosi attack and MN legislator attacks as ”right-wing”. In the end the article makes it look like this is a recent shift that just started this year and is attributed to the Trump election. I’ll disagree. Their conclusions still massively understate the problem.
Not sure if it would interfere with your show dates in Huntsville but if you do go to Chattanooga on Saturday 10/25, it is Wine Over Water - an outdoor wine tasting event. Will be a little different this year. It's usually on the Walnut St. pedestrian bridge but since it is being refurbished, it is on the North Shore of Chattanooga in Renaissance park. The relocation probably isn't too bad. There are several good bars, restaurants on the north shore within easy walking distance and it is a cool area of town. This is one of my favorite events in the area.

I agree with other poster that outdoor stuff at Little River canyon, Cloudland Canyon are great. Canyon Grill near Cloudland Canyon has always been a nice meal (BYOB last time I was there) and McLemore Cove for a round of golf and dinner at their restaurant would be nice add on.

re: Lugano, Switzerland

Granted this has been 20 years ago so take accordingly. We visited both Lake Lugano and Lake Como. I agree that both are very similar and that crossing into Switzerland immediately increases prices massively. However, we had a splurge stay in Lugano. Stayed at the Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola. Probably one of the best hotel experiences I've ever had but it was very expensive. The meal at the hotel was one of the best I've ever had (salt dome encrusted fish). Beautiful view of the town and mountains from right on the water.
We stayed in Varenna on Lake Como. It is across the water from its famous neighbor Bellagio but much better prices and you are looking across the water at Bellagio. Easy boat ride across the lake to Bellagio or other lakeside towns. You can get water front lodging in Varenna with a great lake side promenade for a fraction of Lugano prices. Bottom line - you can't go wrong on either one.

Fried speckled trout for 10 people with appetizer of Nunus Crawfish Boudin from my last fishing trip down. Gonna have to re-supply soon. Stockpile in east TN getting low.
I remember this growing up in area. Crazy.

Fun trivia fact for music board type folks: She got a shout out in the liner notes of a Bela Fleck and the Flecktones album from Futureman. Think it was either The Sinister Minister or Left of Cool. Love the Wooten Bros but that was a head scratcher. Curious about the connection.
Had same issue with my 16 yo. We did Munich and stayed a while in Reutte, Austria. Easy driving and all close proximity. Easy flights to Munich which is a super interesting city for a teen. Reutte had it all. Mountain biking, proximity to the Zugspitz, Highline 179, mountaintop fortresses, nearby ski resort with summer lifts in Biberwier that included mountain karting - our new all time favorite mountain activity. It’s right across the German border from Neuschwanstein.
Also always have to give a shout out to Nole Man. He’s spot on with Slovenia. Fly in/out Venice. Rent car and drive into Slovenia.
Hopping around Croatia on the beaches/islands from Dubrovnik to Split would also be a great.
Except our retards cheer for a real tiger. Not a 30 year old dollar tree plush tiger owned by some meth heads the whole time so that it looks like the love child of Steve Buscemi and Amy Winehouse. Worst mascot in CFB. And don’t get me started on their version of Tiger Rag. #Stillscarredfrom2012PeachBowl#

Thanks FDB! Y’all are awesome. Didn’t think about courtbouillon. That probably is best. Have done that with catfish so makes sense. Still may blacken one first. Mincing, mixing and frying like gar balls is a good plan too. Will check back in with results.

Fresh water drum - recipes?

Posted by Uroblast on 7/26/25 at 9:11 am
Anybody used freshwater drum (gaspergou) in a recipe? The thread about imported redfish got me thinking about it since I’m an inlander in TN and my redfish supply in the freezer is dwindling. This year I can’t get these things off my line when fishing. I keep thinking I need to keep some small ones and give it a shot. Any advice on prep, soaking them, or recipes? Next small one I think I’m going to blacken.

I did car trip from Dubrovnik to Mostar as well. Easy driving. Agree with others who said much still showed effects from the war. They are not on the Euro and their economy is suffering The border crossings are the real deal though. Plenty of non-English speaking armed guys. Had no issues but they didn’t look like folks that would tolerate any tomfoolery. Mostar was fantastic but I don’t know - that is a long way from Venice. It was one of the most “foreign” feeling places I’ve been. Hard to believe it is in Europe. Minarets everywhere. Would have spent 1 night if possible but probably not any longer unless I was exploring the natural areas around. Eat at Mimar on the river with a view overlooking bridge. Here’s an alternative to going all the way to Mostar or a good stopover from Venice. I stopped here randomly on the way to Venice from Slovenia (thanks again for your posts). Check out Palmanova in Italy. I would go back here in a heartbeat.
Last time I drove through it looked closed for good. Haven’t been back to Bastrop in a few years. Gonna make that drive from east TN ASAP and get a sammich! Thanks for the great news!!!
I’d pay a thousand dollars for a sliced beef sandwich and coconut pie from Slaydens BBQ in Bastrop. RIP.
Should be plenty of time. If hungry try Vito's Pizza in the main concourse. It's legit. Have friends that live there and they go to the train station to get their pizza.
If just a 1 night stay check out the Westin downtown. Really cool walkable area around with great restaurants (Easy Bistro, St. John, short walk to Community Pie). Very close access to I-24. Nice bar.
Related from an op Ed in the WSJ. Very interesting.

“ College enrollment has been declining as more parents and students question the value of degrees that can cost as much as a starter home. And for good reason. Colleges keep raising tuition and adding graduate programs to rake in more federal subsidies with little consideration for student outcomes.
A report last week by the Bureau of Labor Statistics found the unemployment rate for recent associate degree (e.g., community college and vocational school) recipients in their 20s was 2.1% compared to 15.3% for four-year college grads and 8.4% for advanced degree recipients. Mull that one over: You have a higher chance of being unemployed these days if you go to college.
Student loans have also become one of the great policy failures of the age. Even before the pandemic, fewer than half of borrowers were paying down their debt. The federal student loan balance sheet has ballooned to $1.7 trillion, double what it was 15 years ago when Democrats used ObamaCare to nationalize the industry. Student debt would now exceed $2 trillion without the Biden loan forgiveness.“

Dang. That is a crazy disparity from vocational degree to 4 year college degrees. Better have a solid plan in place before you put tens or hundreds of thousands into a soft degree at a university. Trades [ on]. Community organizer and social justice degree [off]
