re: WTF - Florida Gators baseball?

People forget that Stony Brook did not just sneak up and surprise us. They took down Miami in Coral Gables in the regional. That Miami program ain’t so proud of that either although is losing alleviated their PTSD. Now Troy beat Miami AND Florida twice. Crazytown man.

Very interesting thread - thanks for research and posting. Random thoughts:
DJ LeMahieu played 15 friggin years in MLB and was batting champ at least once, correct? I mean, he might actually be the most successful Tiger baseball player ever (will see if Skenes becomes that). Would Albert (Joey) Belle be considered the best Tiger in MLB?
As other posters have reminded us, Aaron Hill was crazy good and I think he led the majors in batting average here and there.
Russ Johnson was great in college AND a great pro.
These days would a coach stick with a Kramer Robertson or a Josh Smith and give them time to develop or would they be processed or replaced by a transfer after one year? Different time man…

Two things can be true at same time: watching Coastal Carolina play in the Myrtle Beach Bowl at 11:00 AM on a Wednesday in front of 6,000 fans is depressing. Do I need to watch a 6-6 team play a 5-7 team in the Birmingham Bowl? No
But, if the New Orleans Bowl can scratch out 30,000 fans - that is 30,000 fans in hotels, restaurants and bars (bowls are thrown by chambers of commerce, tourism boards, etc.) and that is a good thing.
Plus: why do we want to watch #3 seed Ohio State beat #21 seed University of Houston 48-13? That really is better? Star players get hurt for rest of playoffs? More is not always more…

Good analysis - thanks for posting. Quick add-on that I mention when people refer to “meaningless bowl games”. While a NY6 Bowl, the Fiesta was last to pick and took Burrow’s LSU vs UCF. Your point about swagger carrying over to the following season cannot be exemplified better than Burrow taking a huge shot but running over to UCF’s sideline to jaw at the defender. That game was not meaningless to him and his teammates saw his fire. The following season has been described as the greatest college football season in history.

I agree with the posters who say ECU or USM for small schools. GA Tech is fun to watch. Nebraska making a deep run would be fun for the fans and TV. Arky and Fla State are due. Just not Florida…

I agree completely with you but when you “even if he only becomes Chase Daniel…” go look up Chase Daniel’s career earnings - I think he had like a 15 year career and made $60MM and he can still walk and think post-NFL. I mean, that is a true success story. Better analogy might be Danny Etling, to be honest - true journeyman would scratches his way onto practice squads for 5-7 years…

In the Jack Nicholson movie “About Schmidt” he gets restless ~3 months into retirement, puts on his best suit and tie, tells his wife he’s going to the office to “help with his files”. When he gets there the young boss says “what are you doing here?” and he spots boxes of his files next to dumpster out back. I hate to think Paul was just having a terrible time adjusting to retirement and said “yes” to Tanner when he should have said “no”, become an advisor, helped with their coaching search, whatever…

I have been a big fan since the Skip and Turtle Thomas days. CPM did take out Texas in the CWS for a title - no small thing there. There were some years where he’d make a lineup change mid-season and the team would rattle off ~20 games in a row. He could get teams hot for the SEC tourney.
However, I kinda remember him more for throwing players under the bus with the media, specifically by name, which I just thought was weird…. So last year towards the end of a dismal season at USCe, CPM says something like “well, we just don’t have the talent across the board to compete in the SEC”. And I was like “true, but you don’t say that out loud.” and “you are the coach, are you coaching them?” He’s just a strange cat…

Who was that catcher that transferred from Air Force a few years ago?? Did not play in the championship series vs Florida but man, he had potential
re: Will Campbell declined to speak to media after Super Bowl
Posted by West Bank Dan on 2/10/26 at 6:49 am to Sabretiger
Nutty if people are saying that Will single-handedly lost that game. Their whole offense was overrated after feasting on the easy last-place schedule during by the season. Did you watch the AFC Championship vs Broncos? That defense completely shut them down too - wasn’t the wind or snow flurries. Coaches need to adjust play calling, WRs need to get open, Maye held the ball way too long. Seattle defense was WAY better than Patriot offense, across the board. If anyone was going to “never live this down” I thought it would be Maye.

When they brought NHL hockey to Atlanta (again) they had a billboard on the highway that said “Come watch our yankees whup their yankees!” Football is now “come watch our pro players whup their pro players!”. I am just going to imagine baseball players come to LSU to play for CJJ and hope I can get a few more years out of baseball before it is ruined. Women’s gymnastics is pretty good to watch if y’all haven’t tried it yet. They smile, cheer and look like they are having fun.

If I remember right, there was a minute when Alfred Blue was our 5th string RB and then he went on to be a starter in the NFL. Yes, an injury knocked him down a few rungs in the ladder here but that dude made it happen as a pro.
Spencer Ware was another guy I loved watching thrive in the NFL. However, with his violent running style you knew he’d have a short window.

I am intrigued by some of the reactions in these threads calling out old people. One from the other day said “I can’t wait for this generation to die off”. Wow.
Two points from a 56 year-old fan:
* pro boxing used to be HUGE. People bought expensive tickets to the Superdome to watch heavyweight fights on a screen(!). Pro boxing, NASCAR, baseball - consumer interest really can spike and then dissolve.
* the USFL trotted out a bunch of guys in familiar uniforms and called them the New Orleans Breakers. I never once looked at their roster or watched a single play of a single game. New Orleans Breakers are no more. People will not just root for a helmet and uniform if there is *zero* connection with the fan base.

I have nothing against them but would you rather root for CJ Daniels and Logan Diggs or Justin Jefferson and CEH? If current portal rules had been in place just a few years ago, there is no way we could have kept (paid) Chase and Jefferson, CEH would not have waited his turn, he would have transferred to Arkansas or Southern Miss.
Delane and Haulcy are very good football players but I’d rather root for Louisiana kids to go 8-4 vs. importing pro players who displace the kids who have been in the program for 3 years.

If there are no repercussions for putting your name in the portal then we might as well assume EVERY starter is going to reset their value via the portal every single year.
I am intrigued that seemingly all the RBs at Texas put names in portal, like they are a union going on strike.

It is a free country and I love capitalism so if a local chamber of commerce wants to partner up with a sponsor to bring in 2 teams and 15-20k fans to fill hotels, I got no problem at all. I will always watch or check in on the New Orleans Bowl and Independene Bowls and hope they do well. It truly bums me out if the Sugar Bowl is not a sellout.
The REAL problem, as a fan of the sport, is rewarding 6-6 or 5-7 teams with bowl games. They really do cheapen the concept and whole experience. Did y’all know Miss State lost 7 of their last 8 and are going to a bowl?
Would watching TCU - USC in a kickoff classic be any more compelling that watching them in the Alamo Bowl last night? Tennessee vs Illinois??
We can be disappointed the prestige of playing in a bowl game is gone, but playing in a bowl game is never “meaningless”. I learned that when Burrow ran over to jaw at the UCF player during the Fiesta Bowl. The rest of the team saw that and stuff like that adds up to what the 2019 season became.

The arguments against the OP are valid - Kiffin and a new OL should improve our run game dramatically. That being said, the bigger picture appears to be:
* if there are no ramifications of putting your name in the portal to test the free agent market then hypothetically ALL starters and entire position groups can come and go every single year. The entire RB “room” at Texas has entered the portal, if I understand it right.
* This dynamic, if unchecked by caps or something, is going to drive up NIL budgets to like $100M within the next two years and then there will be anti-trust lawsuits from schools / conferences to set boundaries.
In short, yes it is a free country and I love capitalism but this is unsustainable as a business model.

I am not suggesting - truly asking - are there guys that “major in football” and simply stop going to class, skip tests knowing that opting out of the bowl is easier route? Are “grades” even a criterion anymore? I mean, how will they be with a professional contract?
