Anyone played in a PGA tour Pro-Am?
Posted by WilsonPickett on 3/20/25 at 9:37 am
I’ve been invited to play in the Wednesday Pro-Am at the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in June. Anyone have any experience in one of these? Advise? What to expect?

Tiger Pointe haven't played here in about 6 months but I like the place and it can be a fun track. Traffic in that direction can be a bitch depending on time of travel. 25 min drive
Craft Farms pretty good shape and can be spacious for wayward drives. They no longer have a toll on the bridge. 30 min drive.
Lost Key is tough on a higher handicap golfers. Which can really suck for vacation golf.
Perdido Bay is OK and I play in regularly because my place is 3 min away from there, but they need to improve maintenance. Bunkers were crap two weeks ago.

24 years ago I left a chemical plant job I had been at for 9 yrs. Everyone thought I was crazy and so did my wife. Here I sit today with 26 employees, my only debt is the mortgage on the building where the business is in, and it should be paid off in 3-5 yrs.
It was an absolute GRIND to get here, and the wife and I put in many hours to get it to where it is. The last 10-12 yrs have been easy. by comparison. to the first 10-12 and the last 3 have been awesome. Financial freedom and spend more time fishing and golfing than working! My wife is my one and only business partner.
I actually left the plant to start a different business than what I've been doing for the last 20 yrs. But when I had my first business it showed me there was a need for something different, so I sold the first business after 4 years and started the business I've had for the last 20 yrs.

I run the Oregon G6 Gator Blades, they do a great job of reducing the size of the discharge.

Pretty sure the son of the Dutchtown baseball coach played on it also, it's not all Eastbankers.

We used a simple for years but just switched to a 401k for our company (28 employees). We switched because we turned 50 and max annual is $30,500 this year with 401K, and it’s $19,500 with a Simple. But if that doesn’t matter to him then I’d go Simple. It’s easier to deal with. All of ours is thru our Edward Jones office 401K has a lot more rules and regs and can be a pain in the rear.

I ordered a brand new 2025 Sea Hunt 255 UltraSE yesterday, it comes in sometime in Sept. We have a condo in Perdido Key with a boat slip and lift. That’s where it will stay. If I didn’t have a place on the water I’d probably not own a boat. I hate towing and launching all the time. I’ve owned a boat for the last 12 yrs or so. Had a camp on Grand Isle before Ida took it away. Boat stayed down there full time unless I was having it serviced. Spend probably $2k a yr on maintenance if nothing is actually in need of repair. But I do love being on my boat, I loved fishing GI. In PK it’s more sandbar chilling and cruising. Fishing ain’t as good but I love it down there and always want to be on the boat.
I have a 40x60 shop with about 1/3 of it as a dedicated wood shop. I have a stock of birch plywoods, new and old cypress board and poplar. When it’s time to build I don’t have to go to lumber yard. I build for myself and family only. Never for money. It’s one of my happiest places in the world. I have a large dust collection system and all my tools have a spot so when I’m working in their I can stop, leave and comeback later and not have to pick everything up or move stuff around.
I play golf but don’t spend a lot of money here. I used to play a lot but I only really play now because my son has picked up the game and it’s a place to hang out with him.
I have a ton of crap 38hp Kubota tractor w/ loader. I love the tractor but with 2.5 acres is more of a 38hp wheel barrow. I do loan it out regularly to make sure it’s getting run.i have a Hustler SuperZ to mow my 2.5 acres. ?? bitch is fast, knocks it out fast. Wife says sell it and hire someone but I’m picky about my place looking good. My shop looks like a Yeti & Grizzly cooler warehouse! Not sure how I’ve ended up with so many?

I was 250 lbs in November 2023. I’m only 5’6”. I had Non-Alcholic Fatty Liver, pre-Diabetic, high cholesterol, low-testosterone. I was a sugar-addict, it’s how I dealt with my stress. I own my own business and have 30 employees and it’s great but since Covid it’s been so stressful. I was already heavy (215) from being a desk jockey. Spend my days looking at spread sheets and emails!
I did a 2-week sugar detox to start Dec 2023. This was the hardest thing I’d ever done. I was like a crack addict in a rehab! doc put me on Mounjaro (5mg) in mid-December. I’m still on 5mg today and I’m down to 185. All my numbers are now in check. I actually take the shot every 10days now instead of weekly. I do resistance and weight work at home in the mornings to keep my strength up. It’s crazy how my taste buds are totally different now. Eat foods I never liked. Drink unsweet tea w/ no sweeteners, when I do eat a dessert it can’t be very sweet or rich.
I’m not sure how this journey ends buts so far it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me.

Watch out for 'Covid' boats. Many a manufacturer struggling with production quality during and just after Covid. Lots of 2022's out there with fiberglass and electrical issues from half-arse work.
I like new, but sometimes there can be deals to be had. Just do your homework and get it looked over by an expert.

I'm an 8 currently and shot 92 on day 1 & 90 on day 2. On day 3 we play the golds and played a 2-man scramble game with the entire group. Each day I started well but the back nine was tough and I believe mostly because of the heat. If you play maroon out there you'll have some long 2nd shots (175-200) into pretty tough greens and the chipping and putting can be tough. I saw 2 guys putt it right off the green. You have to be below the hole. You also have to pay attention to the hills and valleys to know if you're putting up hill or down hill on some of the greens. My buddy shot 105+ each day but he just plays golf occasionally and on trips like this. One of the guys with us is probably a 2-3 and he didn't break 80 either day. The other that played with us is 70+ yrs old and the place kicked his arse. One the back nine both days he was struggling just to make it up/down the hills. Don't think he actually recorded a full score either day.
The fairways can be big but if you're off of them you're in the desert. The desert is pretty much unplayable, lots of shrubs and small trees. Again, PLAY THE MAROON TEES at least once! Some of the tee shots and views from them are spectacular.

I play Perdido Bay pretty regularly because it's 5 min from our place down there. It's a great course for the money. It won't beat your arse like Kiva can do some days. It's also great place for practice. Buy a bucket of range balls and you can hit balls on the range, chip on their practice chipping green and putt on their practice putting green. I do this alot in the off season.
Craft Farms is also pretty friendly to the average golfer. It has some wide fairways and the greens are not very tough either. I just can't travel that way when it's summer, traffic and crowds. When I'm down there I wanna golf early and get back quickly so I can get out on the boat.
I'd play Kiva more, it's the gem of the area but it's an hour + drive for me from our place in Perdido, especially in season.
Lost Key is OK, but it's tough if you don't hit it straight.

Man, from Lajitas to the beach? Tough life you live for sure.
Yeah it's been a tough couple of weeks for me!
There are 2-3 water stations on the course where they keep water in ice chest you can grab to refill your cart. But make sure you fill your ice chest with ice at the halfway house because there's not enough ice in the water stations to do much with.

I was hoping to post it all tomorrow from my computer, hate typing in this phone. I went straight to the beach from the trip so I’m just getting settled back in.
The course was awesome! Great condition and unbelievably scenic! I’ll try to post my pics tomorrow when I can. It was pretty dang tough golf. We played Maroon tees the 1st couple days and it’s 6800yds from there. Gold is 6100, we played them the last day. but the views from Maroon were worth the extra 700 yds! When we played gold it was shorter but had to driver into the smaller neck of the fairways many times.
The greens are tough. Mostly reading them, because some reads are hard to tell if you’re up hill or down hill. Several false fronts and many times it imperative you get on the right level on the green to have a decent shot at 2 putting. The ball flies a little further out there also so figure about 5-12 yards more distance with your irons. It got me a couple times.
It was 106* all 3 days we were there.
Hot As Frick!! Bring plenty sun block, a wide brim hat and maybe something cool to put around your neck. They do have cold towels at the clubhouse. It’s so dry you never sweat! Drink plenty of water. No bev carts, so make sure you’re ice chest in the cart is loaded, there is a halfway house with food and bev (full bar). The place has a natural spring on the property so there’s a couple large ponds and a small spring running through the place. The running water in the spring is like 100*! Blows your mind when you put your hands in it, didn’t expect that.
The flight!! This is the only way to go. You get to Dallas Love JSX terminal 30 min before your flight. Show your license and they grab your luggage and you chill. 26 people on the plane, all single seats, free WiFi thoughout the flight and free drinks, yes alcohol, and snacks. Flight was about 1hr 30min and was perfect. It will spoil you! I think it was $1100 a person for round trip, my wife pays the bills, I just create them! When you land at Lajitas they take your clubs and luggage with them and you’re good to go.
The resort is nice enough but nothing special. There’s NOTHING out there but this place. It has 1 restaurant, a bar (serves food) and a bakery/coffee place. Everything we ate and drank was good and can’t complain about anything on that side.
I’ll try to post pics tomorrow and answer any questions you may have and maybe some tips on a few holes that may help if I can remember them!
