I had Acral Lentiginous Melanoma, a rare skin cancer. Started as a small purple dot under my thumb nail that took the lymph node highway up my body, and formed a tumor on my face. Numerous surgeries (2 plastic surgeries to fix my face and reconstruct an ear) and chemo. You know what both the dermotologist and my oncologist told me when I asked if I got it from too much sun expsure? "Nope, you got it because you have bad luck."

The number-1 gas price gouger in the California, is the state of California. With one stroke of a pen, they could suspend the state gas taxes and stop the bullshite of having summer gas and winter gas (which causes the refineries to switch over and pass that cost on to the citizens). Because gas starts to degrade between 3-6 months, they start selling to the plain state markets two months before each switchover.

Bozeman, Montana -16. Really, after it hit about 20 degrees, it didn't matter, just numb.
Cairo, Egypt. It was 113, and while I've been in hotter (119 in Palm Desert), Cairo is 1050 years old and they still haven't planted one f'ing tree in that city that you could find shade underneath. If you were outside of the hotel, there was no place to hide from the sun.

In the late 80's through the mid-90's I was assigned to the per capital most violent place in the USA. I will tell you that the amount of violence and disregard for human life was mindnumbingly ridiculous, yet inovative. We actually had a woman beat her sister to death with a frozen tube of hamburger over an 8-ball. Day after day, everyone in that city lived their life with this unbelieveable hyper-vigilance and sense of fear that was palpable.
Now, 30 years later, the projects and tenaments have been bulldozed and replaced with houses, swankier apartments. Big chain businesses replaced junkyards and shooting galleries. There hasn't been a murder in that city in almost 4 years and the houses are going for $500-800K.

I spent the final 13 years of my career assigned to a Child Exploitation/Internet Crimes Against Children unit. I quickly learned 3 things.
1-There is no limit to the evil that adults can/will do to children.
2-Unfortunately when you interview these demons, you have have to come at them in an "understanding/non-confronattional " manner, because you need to garner as much information from them as possible (including additional victims). I, from time to time loathed myself for having to be civil to these demons.
3-You prey on a child, it should be a capital punishment case. They truly change the course of history, often for generatiions. Unlike homicide, the survivor remains and relives their pain the rest of their lives, oten unwillingly passing that pain onto others in their lives.

re: In the Eye of the Storm...Escaping the LA Fires. How did so many people end up like this?
Posted by Cali-to-Death Valley on 11/24/25 at 11:19 pm to duckblind56
Living in Sonoma County I am very familiar with how fast these fires move. My father who was 92 was living at an asisted living facility in Santa Rosa the night the Tubbs Fire started. Pushed by 60 mph winds and 90 mph gusts. That fire covered the almost 13 miles from Calistoga to Santa Rosa in just over 3 and a half hours burning the facility to the ground.
On a side note, my father was one of 82 elderly people who were abandoned by the staff as the fire approached. An incredible group of citizens driving by the facilty, put their lives on the line by pulling into the facility and evacutating people in their personal vehicles. My father and 3 other folks in their 90's were evacuated by a teenaged Hispanic girl (never found out who she was) and driven to a Catholic church in Cotati.
When we finally tracked my father late in the day on October 9th, he had escaped wearing just his robe, slippers and boxer shorts. The first thing my father said to me was "it was the most scared I've ever been", which is something, considering my dad was in the 7th Infantry Division at Chosin. Miss you Dad.

Let me be honest. I have a face like a fist and a body just this side of Jabba the Hut. So no, not even if I was worth billions could I pull something like that.

Sauteed crab fingers with an order of crab meat stuffed mushrooms. Eat the crab fingers first, then pour th remaining crab finger sauce over the mushrooms. FYI, make sure you have your cardiologist on speed dial.

I've coached HS football for many years.A few years back services like HUDL allowed you to retrieve a metric report from info you downloaded. Two weeks ago I was talking to an opposing AD after our game who told me he and the head basketball coach were actively having a group of students working on an AI assist for their basketball team. He said if it helps, they'll definitely suggest using AI to the football program. In reality though, the bottom line is that it will always be more about the Jimmy's and Joe's, than the X's and O's.

Not weird to us, because my mother was from Naples, but it is to most non-Italians and 3+ generation Italian-Americans I know, pasta e patate, which is pasta with potatoes. I still eat it during the winter months. My Irish wife thinks its gross.
re: Why do bald guys think the shaved head looks good?
Posted by Cali-to-Death Valley on 9/21/25 at 12:21 am to Slippy
Lost my hair when I had chemo in 2012. Prior to that I had started male pattern baldness. When my hair started to grow back, it came back in small patches. Looked like I had the mange. Started shaving my head because it just looked better. Tried letting my hair grow back last year just to see if it changed. Nope. Same mangy look. Patch here, patch there. Gonna keep shaving my head.
