Parking off the highway and hunting
Posted by Jake85 on 12/4/13 at 12:43 am
Thinking of hunting Maurespas WMA... parking my truck off of hwy 61 and bringing my pirogue in or just walking in... is this illegal? I can't find anything specific in the hunting regs. I've done this a few years ago but haven't hunted since then, so I don't know if things have changed or not.

Hope nothing for the best for Chad Jones. I think it's an absolute miracle that he is able to do this after everything he's been through. That being said, I would love to read a headline about him not trying to make a "comeback" in professional sports. I'm saying I hope he knows when to hang it up and move on. The guys is a class act and could be successful at a lot of different things in life. Just hope for his sake he doesn't think it's a failure if he doesn't play ______ professionally.

I didn't really follow the draft and didn't know where players were projected to go, but when I heard RS on 104.5 yesterday my first thought was how full of shite he sounded. Pretty pathetic actually. It almost sounded like he was trying to convince himself of what he was telling Mascona. He was a 5 star recruit who sucked arse in college... it's as simple as that. There is a reason he didn't have the ball in is hands more. If he failed to contribute at LSU, he isn't going magically put it together in the NFL... I don't care what offense he is going to. The sooner RS realizes this, the better. Either way, he'll be making a hell of a lot more money bouncing around NFL practice squads than I ever will working 50 hours a week.
re: LSU vs ULL name for rivalry.

The win/loss in this baseball game is about equal to the LSU-BR/Alabama football rivalry. They have beaten us twice as many times as we have beaten them. Alabama has beaten the LSU-BR about twice as many times as they have been beaten by them.
As far as the no touchdowns in forever for our football team in Tiger Stadium, I want to see them hold the guys we have now to no touchdowns. Florida sure couldn't! You Tiger fans keep on saying that, but it is hollow because they want no part of us now. We would have fun playing them this year with your downgraded defense that left for the draft because they have no confidence in the team.
Johnny, instead of boasting about an almost victory against Florida, maybe ULL should try beating teams in their own conference... like North Texas - who LSU slept walked through and hung 40+.

I usually just remind ULL fans I know that LSU wears the purple jerseys when the peppers come to TS. It's fun because it takes em' a few seconds to realize that LSU only wears purple jerseys against the shittiest of out-of-conference teams. Oh and they haven't scored a touchdown against LSU in over a century...
Joyce WMA duck hunting
Posted by Jake85 on 1/11/13 at 11:06 am
I apologize if this has been discussed a hundred times before - also forgive my laziness for not searching - but any waterfowl tips for Joyce would be much appreciated. I've been a couple times before in recent years, but this would be my first and only hunt this year (I work out of state and will be home this weekend). I'm familiar with the LDWF map and the general layout of the wma (i.e., the marsh and canals off I-55). I'm only interested in shooting a few woodies. Actually I'm probably more interested in getting away from the crowd and just enjoying the outdoors - so I guess my question is, in order of importance, where would be best option for 1) being along 2) shooting a woodie?
Thanks in advance

I'm planning on riding out to Joyce on Monday morning to make one last hunt before the season ends. If any of you guys are gonna be out there, let me know.

Is there a good place to walk in from Hwy 51 that isint all water to possibly squirrel hunt?
Walking into Joyce from Hwy 51 is next to impossible. I've taken my pirogue out there a few times off Hwy 51, and even that is tough.

so do ya'll shoot out of your canoe ? or do you just stand in the water ?
I'm usually shooting wood ducks on the edge of a tree line or deep in a swamp, so I'm always hunting out of my pirogue. If I do get out I'm standing on dry ground taking a piss. If I'm standing waist deep in water it means I fell out of my boat.

I didn't do any hunting at all. I'm definitely going to try and make a trip out there before Jan 29, if nothing else to paddle around and see what's going on.

This is word for word what I bring with me... I hunt out of a pirogue too.

How often are you out at Big Branch? I just got into duck hunting last year... I've mostly hunted Pearl River WMA this season, haven't done much at all the second split. I've been wanting to check out Big Branch, but figure I need to scout a bit instead of going out there in the dark one morning hoping to find a spot. Let me know if you ever planning a hunt and wouldn't mind somebody tagging along... I would like to go with someone who has hunted the area at least once.

Looking good! I used a scarf joint. I was worried about how it would hold up, but turns out the joint is stronger than the rest of the plywood
Good luck with the rest of it. Keep posting pics

I built my own pirogue a few years ago... still use it today for duck hunting, crawfishing, crabbbing and whatever else. I used 1/4 inch plywood from home depot, about $15 a sheet. fiberglassed the entire outside and seams on the inside. Primed and painted it in duck blind green. 14' and weighs about 40 pounds. It can hold about 375 pounds. I sand and repaint each year, but other than that I love it.
The most I've ever put in it was myself, my brother's twin boys (7 years old), my gun, gear and some decoys. The water was about a half inch from coming in the boat

You can but Im not telling you my spot cause it gets to crowded with two or three people in the area, but I here the lower half by the lake is nice and spread out. Got a buddy that hunts down in there and says he does pretty good.
I'm limiting myself to hunting wood ducks when it comes to WMAs. I'm tired of fighting the crowds, and wood ducks usually can be found where people aren't willing to go. I usually put my pirogue in a ditch off highways and paddle deep into the swamps - I'd take shooting 1 or 2 woodies over big crowds every time.
re: Anyone duck hunt pearl river?
Posted by Jake85 on 12/8/11 at 12:31 pm
I made a few hunts there during the first split... there wasn't much going on. I saw a few wood ducks and only had one passing shot. I talked to a few regulars out there that said the river is pretty low, which obviously affects all of the bayous and sloughs. Not sure where the birds are, but they aren't in Pearl River WMA.

this is why I havent tried to learn duck hunting. Went once with someone else and it was a blast. But some a-hole tried to run us out of our blind then went 100 yards away and rained us with pellets all day. It's bad enough dealing with the scum when deer hunting, but Im afraid I would end up in jail if I had to deal with people shooting at me every morning.
I can't stand people who try to control the public land like this. If I get out to a spot and someone else is already there, tuff shite, I wish them well and head the other way. That's why it's called public land.

Alabama sucks bad. WVU & Oregon both put 20+ on LSU's D. Alabama only could score 6. hahahahaha.

So I started my dream job recently and I get to work today to have my boss (Okie State alum) tell me, "You guys better start praying that you lose a game before the years' end so that way you won't have to face Ok. State in the MNC game. The LSU - Bama game was the most pathetic game I have ever seen in my life. Ok. State has just as much talent on defense and twice as much on offense as LSU does. Everybody keeps talking about how good ya'lls defenses are, but I hope that you realize that it's just because your offense's suck so bad. We would hang a minimum of 35 points and 500 yards on your vaunghted Defense".
To put in perspective for your boss, a Sunbelt Conference team that hasn't scored a TD on LSU in the last century, put up 30+ on OK State's talented D.
