re: Why do so many teenagers not care about getting their drivers license anymore?
Posted by engvol on 5/1/25 at 7:14 pm
I didn't pass until I was 24
I was youngest in my class so by the time I could learn all my friends had already done so and would always offer to pick me up, then I went to college and couldn't afford to and had no need to drive.
When I got a job it was initially walking distance and then when I moved jobs it was quicker to get the train than drive (20mins vs 40mins) so agajn didn't need to.
Ended up learning because I was going to have to get a job somewhere I didn't want to live so learnt so I could drive there rather than move.
Never felt it inconvenienced me but if I couldn't drive now I'd be screwed. You adapt to your circumstances and it's easier to it need something you've never had than to lose something and not have it.

re: Have lived whole life in 50-mile radius or less for 80% or more of your life…
Posted by engvol on 4/25/25 at 8:48 am
I've lived about 150 miles from home for around 40% of my life (33).
There's some great benefits and some downside for sure.
Location wise where I live now is significantly nicer, perfect balance of country and town and the town centre is still thriving unlike back home where it's dog shite. More to do here aswell and we love the area.
However I'd be lying if I didn't pretend I miss family and childhood friends. My wife is a similar situation but 150 miles the other way, so locationally it works for us seeing our families equally. It also sucks now we have a kid knowing our parents won't be as involved in his life as much as they or we would like them to be. We talk about moving closer to her side for more support etc. but haven't done it yet. I suspect we will do in the couple of years, definitely if we want a 2nd.

re: What was the strangest thing you saw at Easter mass today?
Posted by engvol on 4/20/25 at 5:01 pm
I / my family went to Easter Mass for the first time in years. It was my boys (2yrs) first service outside of Christmas services, everyone was very welcoming and seemed happy to have a new young family attend - even if I did have to leave 6 times because he kept insisting he needed a wee...
The thing I noticed was there was not one fatty there. It made me wonder if it was because of a) the teaching against gluttony or b) fattys probably aren't disciplined enough to turn up.
The sermon had slight changes to how my old priest used to do it and that irked me. Not least using the word "your" instead of "thy".
6/10, likely to do it again

re: Is “Ms. Rachel” wholesome content in your opinion?

I always thought Blippi looked like Justin Timberlake in Bad Teacher
My now 3 year old used to watch Ms Rachel, something about her voice would chill him the frick out immediately when he was 1-2. If he was having a tantrum in the car I'd put her on through the speakers and he would shut up straight away, I assume it's the pitch of her voice.
He's now obsessed with Thomas the Tank Engine, I don't think it's as deep as a lot in this thread are making out

What happens if he doesn't get the offers he wants? Is he going to sit out a year?
This move would mean I wouldn't trust him to be anything other than a 1 year QB who will look for the best situation every year. How many people want a 1 year rental this late in the game?

re: Is Nico really worth $8 million?
Posted by engvol on 4/13/25 at 4:20 am
Nico had a decent year for a redshirt freshman, and I was looking forward to this next year with a season under his belt.
But
Letting him go is the best move for the team going forward, once you bow once you do it a second and third time. You can't blink in this situation and I'm thrilled that Heupel and everyone else refused to.

I know someone taking Mounjaro in the UK, it costs are $200 every 4 weeks.
Why is it over $1000 in the US? That's the real thing that needs looking at

The absolute insistence on driving out all manufacturing from this country is dumb.
I'm against publicly owned companies in general but a country needs to ensure it is self sufficient in certain things such as energy, and we are doing everything we can to go the other way.
Countries become great by making things not by having 30 coffee shops in each town centre and nothing else.
