I’d consider it a much greater achievement than swimming in a triathlon.
I'd never attempt it as it is definitely risky. I'm not saying strong swimmers would make it 100% of the time. I am not overly surprised that someone made it though. Swimming 2.4 miles is nearly 5 times the distance she swam and people are conserving enough energy to bike 112 miles and run a marathon afterwards. I think many more can survive it from an endurance perspective than you think. It's the dangers from ships, debris, etc. that I worry about. But I can see how someone is lucky to avoid it all and get across too.

Do you just assume the current is straight down or something?

The red line was her swim path?
Yeah, she swam a perfectly straight line. No way someone just randomly put a line over the picture to show the round-a-bout path she took.
I've done a good bit of open water swimming doing triathlons. I have no doubt I could cross (although I'd rather not try). I have no idea where I'd end up, but wouldn't drown. And I'm an average swimmer in that regard. It does not surprise me someone could do it at all.

Wife works for a 16,500 seat venue. Get to go to pretty much any show for free and park 100 yards from where we sit. 75% of the time it's in some premium seats. It's worth it for me at least . I go to shows I'd never pay for and often come away from it having enjoyed the experience (drinking helps). Actually saw Dierks Bently (I hate current country) last year. He shook my 3 year olds hand, so it was a fun experience for him.

Ehhhh, that's pretty much ever generation. You get old and don't pay attention to the new stuff. Doesn't matter the medium. My grandpa was not humming 99 problems while doing chores around the house because he overheard it on the TV. My other grandpa was, but he's always been kind of gangsta.

Just found this show. It's crazy how I cant put my finger on what makes it so good. She can look at the camera and I bust out laughing. Then it can be serious in the same scene. Still on episode one of season 2.

What would be the cheapest option for a half iron man? The Cervelo P3 is what a buddy of mine used in Chattanooga. They are at least 1500 used. I couldn’t possibly justify that for what is likely a one time deal.
If it's only one time and just to finish, get a road bike. That will be the best financial decision.
A tri bike will cut a lot of time though. Intro bikes start at around 2k MSRP, but deals can be found. Used is the way to go for a good deal. Cervelo is probably the most expensive brand, but holds its value well. You can look at Felt B series. It's a great value bike and there are probably good used deals.
Dont forget all the other stuff though. Pedals, shoes, helmet, tri suit, wetsuit, etc. can all add up to over 500 easily. Triathlon is expensive.

I'm not finished with the podcast, but he says it won't stop it, but he is for it. So he thinks something would come out of it. Even Rogan made the comment that who knows how much worse it would be if there wasn't a wall in certain places.
It does paint a pretty bleak picture though. You are not going to fix the problem without fixing the country itself (reduce poverty, etc.). Even points out that legalization doesn't help. Weed legalization only made them change their imports to heroin and fentanyl. Can't make everything legal. Their business will always be making money on things you can't do legally in the US.

It’s a bike just go to Walmart.
And get yourself put in the hospital. There are plenty of youtube videos of guys taking "Walmart" bikes down a trail. The bikes barely make it past one day. I have never ridden crazy stuff, but even the rooty and hilly areas north of Houston have enough features to destroy a cheap bike after a few rides. The suspension on a Walmart bike is for show. Would not trust it when needed. Are bikes overpriced.....sure. But box store bikes are not really meant for serious riding.

Check out craigslist. I got a Giant XTC Advanced 29r for $1000. That's a full carbon frame hard tail. That's like a $3000+ bike brand new. Owned by a bike shop mechanic. He built the bike up with a replacement frame he got, so it was a brand new frame. Can easily find bikes in the sub $1k range, and if you really want quality stuff, do your research and just wait. Good deals pop up (I've bought and sold several).

make the bottom shelf a little lower and put 4 square pavers for the egg to sit on to prevent embers from damaging the wood.
Most plans already take this into account. And BGE sells a small stand made for this purpose. It's only like $25 and holds the pit up off the wood. The pavers definitely work, but I liked the clean look with the stand.
Definitely brace the side supporting the BGE weight a little more though. That's one thing you have to remember.
re: Request: Building Green Egg Cart

Built in an afternoon a few years ago. I think it was $120 with casters. All in, it was the same price as buying the egg with the nest set up or less. I forget what the plans were, but the green egg dealer had the critical dimensions (hole size, height of shelf and top, etc). I modified several things anyway. Such as not using 4x4s for the legs. Its completely not necessary. This thing is a tank as it is. Only thing I'd do differently is the finish. Thompsons water seal works, but it's not the best looking. I'd spend more time sealing the top as well as it gets stained easy.

Ignore the damn thing and keep fishing.
Have you ever been fishing offshore with 4 or 5 guys on a center console. Not always a lot of space when you are miles and miles away from shore for 8 hours or more. And if you are fighting a large fish, there could be a lot going on in the boat. Having to mind a possibly rabid animal that wants to scratch your eyes out the whole time isn't much of an option.
Its be tough to drown it and certainly wouldn't post a video. But just letting it hang out with you isn't much of an option either.

I believe my father in law was taking CBD and got popped on a drug test at work. It shows up even though the THC levels are low. When I was a student athlete, you were randomly drug tested.

Any idea how soon?
No way to tell. But when I do move, the company pays all realtor fees, closing costs, etc. Actually usually provides a 3% value of your home as a bonus. So from the "cost of moving" perspective, it's not that big of a deal for us.

15yr. mortgage and feel comfortable with the note,
I'm still looking at 30 year notes. I know we could definitely afford it at 15 year, but I don't know if I could say I'd be comfortable with it. Really not from a place where we couldn't afford it. Just from a perspective of being stuck with a note that high (~2900 a month in my area when including taxes and insurance). We make good money and I just don't see how so many are dropping that kind of coin on houses.
re: Thoughts on home values - Will they ever drop back to the values 5-10 years ago?
Posted by KG6 on 5/15/19 at 10:19 am
My home value has dropped over the last 4 1/2 years. Only about 4.5%, but still. And that's legitimate as we are casually trying to sell.

I feel like giving an idea of your age would help. We are in the process of moving. No rush for us as we are just trying to get in a really good school district and have until the end of next summer. I'm 33 and although we have the funds to jump into a house, we will be starting with only 20% down again. And with my career, I'll be moving again eventually. Trying to figure out when is a good point to start actually paying down more than 20% on houses and eventually have a house paid for.

And just bc abortion has utilitarian value doesn’t make it moral.
My only hang up is medical necessity. If "conception" is the starting point, what happens to a an ectopic pregnancy, where the embryo implants in the fallopian tube. Very much a danger to the life of the mother and there is no way for the pregnancy to go to term. Any intervention to save the mother can be construed as terminating a pregnancy. Under the extreme religious version of the pro life stance, that would not be legal.
I have a moral opposition to abortion. But can't quite get to the far end of it where if an egg is fertilized, end of story, no other way to look at it type of mentality. I guess my point is morality isn't as fine a line as some people think it is.....in any situation, not just abortion.

It’s weird how that point in a half Ironman I’m running at like a 7:16 pace instead of my regular 6:40 half marathon pace, but in the full 8:30 and 9:00 miles are all I got left!
Running has always been my weakness. But I was running 11 minute miles and felt like I couldn't move faster. It's also crazy how I felt like king of the world at the end of the bike. I was blowing my expected times out of the water and cut back on the bike hard to save myself for the run. I was like 25 watts under my power that I trained with at the end of the day. Was really a nutrition thing where I just felt sick, but after about 8 miles, everything was gone. I went from thinking I'd be at around 11.5 hours to working hard to beating 13 hours. And it all came down to the run.
The race isn't the worst thing in the world, but the training is just too much. I'd love to do one again, but I'd just have to have a 6 month window of nothing. And I'll have to run a 3:45 or under full marathon with a huge running base to attempt again. I can swim sub 1:15, can ride at a 20mph average......but none of it matters when I can't run for sh*t.
Sounds like you have some low hanging fruit on the swim. But otherwise, I think you'll make a huge improvement just based on the experience. I think I could be in the same exact physical shape and shave 20+ minutes off of my time just making a few different choices.
