Oil and gas downturns can be rough, if you've been through it you know. So you know how it is, you either get laid off or you get the privilege of taking on other people's jobs that they cut.
I've been self-employed ever since and I do very well for myself now. It definitely sucks being on the other side of it though, I had to liquidate one of my companies during the O&G downturn circa 2017. Instead of being a dick and having the managers do it and then laying off the managers, I spent a week speaking to each person individually. IMO it's the least you can do in an unfortunate situation like that
That was a brutal time. I survived layoff after layoff and was added task after task. My anxiety was through the roof and finally decided to go on meds. I finally had enough and left the industry in 2020, and it was a blessing in disguise. I still keep in touch with co-workers and it has not improved much.
Kudos to you being a leader. Lots of loyal people would just get a phone call from HR during their time off.

Here is one for nostalgia:
"HEAD ON! Apply directly to the forehead!"
The commercial repeated that line seven or eight times in a row. I wonder if it actually worked. It definitely drove me crazy.

Always have flowers delivered to their work or social group location. Never to their house. They want the big show in front of their friends and coworkers.
When we were first married I was going to post one of those valentines day my wife is the best post as I figured she would get pissed, because I saw all the bullshite the previous year. She caught me writing it up and said yeah don't do that. I asked why and she said good men don't post that stuff. That's being posted by a guy who either has a batshit crazy woman who flips her shite if she is not worshipped online (so she does not want that stigma), a guy who is a narcissist who is really posting about how he landed a trophy, or a guy who is desperate to save his relationship. She said emotional touchy feely posts like that should only come from the wife.
:cheers:to never having to stress over that.
And yes I only send flowers to our house.
If you have no plans to marry, don't waste their time.
Date for several months. If you think there is a potential, then give it a set timeframe to make a decision. At the end of the timeframe decide if its the one, you need a little more time, or abort.
Don't keep her in your life if you have no plans for a future with her.
I worked with one guy who strung along a woman for years. She loved him dearly. The dad finally cornered him and asked WTF? He said he sees no benefit in marriage. Imagine if your daughter was dating a guy like that and you are doing everything to pull the wool from her eyes but she stays hopeful, while her BF has that mindset?

The bland outside wasn't enough for these people, so they decided they wanted their lives to be void of all color.
For the past four years I have worked with an architect and the architect's interior designer on a few projects.
When you see all that white on the interior, its because the owner is too cheap to hire a real designer, his wife is doing it herself, he has champagne taste on a beer budget, or is indecisive on what to do so they just go all white as its safe and it can re-sell.
If you think that what you see in these pics are expensive, a designer that has unique tastes and skills to design each room with a theme, proper flow, color schemes, etc is through the roof.
What pisses me off the most is a so called luxury custom home which has basic exterior features and little to no landscaping/hardscaping/lighting.

You baws seem to have this whole dentist scam figured out. Yep you caught us red handed.
Just know, in a few years, when you need a set of dentures, I’ll be happy to fix you up with a set of plates. I’ll even come out of retirement (I retired just 10-15 years after I graduated dental school).
I’ll just have to find time between the boating, golf club memberships, lavish vacations and my polo ponies.
But honestly, I’m here to help and would be glad to shuck your remaining teeth in your head to make way for your replacement for not having teeth.
Just LMK.
The OP reminds me of people I worked offshore with. The company provided health/dental benefits, but many did not use it. Gum disease, dragon breath, a mouth filled with just a few crooked teeth, jacked up grills, etc.
I know there is a dentist here who can explain further in detail, but a mouth that is not cared for leads to way bigger health issues, like congestive heart failure.
Dental work is not covered by insurance. There is no annual deductible you hit like you can with medical and be able to finally get that major knee surgery as the procedure is 90% covered. The cleanings are relatively cheap in order to prevent the big arse bills years down the road.
And yes someone posted you should not go into one of those corporate dental offices that is all about upsells. Private guy only.
Good point. You are living the dream and have a fulfilled life with your children. Now you and your spouse have turned attention on each other’s well being. Hats off to that.
They are living in the moment.
Years or decades later, they then complain and hate on people like Elon Musk and anyone who lives great but works little. They only see the end result not the journey.
I am watching the news today and see several interviews with people 70 years old+ shoveling sandbags at a public sandbag distribution center. I can't imagine shoveling/throwing sandbags around at 70 to protect my house. If I am voluntarily living somewhere where I need public sandbags, and need to do it all myself, then I made wrong decisions in life.
Those 70 somethings bought the fancy truck every 5-7 years when they had their youth.

Still trying to understand when these games are close and down to the wire . The play is not being set up to go to a 7-4” dude with an 8 ft wingspan posting up in the paint.
Hakeem, Shaq, Ewing, Robinson….they all would and could do this.
Very disappointed in his abilities when the game really counted

I know that my friend. It’s the ads that claim this. It’s pretty amusing.
It seems that TD is taking life more and more seriously these days. I find these ads weird, funny, but also wondering if their claims actually work.
OTC meds for shooting ropes
Posted by Mariner on 6/12/26 at 3:51 pm
At my age I keep getting ads for natural OTC meds claiming the pills can fill up a guy's sack up to the top like the glory days, and recreate Niagara Falls.
Anyone take these meds and can vouch for them, or is it just snake oil?

Where do the middle to upper middle class families eat now?
Not chain restaurants. That attracts the opposite.
Local places is where they go. There are some restaurant group small chains that are great like Mastros, Nobu, Houston’s, etc. Which can be included.
Still to this day, mainstream America likes to know what they are getting food wise and cost wise before they walk into the restaurant. That is very hard to do at a local joint. I love trying new places and if it sucks well oh well at least I know. However, the majority of people can’t handle or come to terms with that, so they stick with what they know. It’s why McDonalds and Olive Garden are still in business. Why go to McDonalds when you can go to a local smash burger joint? Why go to Olive Garden when you can go to a local guy who grew up in Florence and cooked his whole life?
Because they know what they are getting.
re: Buying a new vehicle pay cash or finance then just pay off?

I’ve done all three. Finance, cash, and lease.
The most gratifying thing is writing a check instead of peddling with financing, and seeing a paid off car in the driveway for as long as you want to own it.
You will get different opinions. Having full ownership of the car is gratifying, but the argument can be made to invest the money and make more….but what if a crash happens? I would do what is best for your comfort zone.
My last purchase I wanted to pay cash as a returning customer, but the dealer offered me a three year lease with half paid up front for a discount. I would invest the other half and could walk away at the end of three years, pay the other half at discount, or trade it in.
I have a relationship with the sales manager and point blank asked what is in it for him to do the lease at a discount. He said if I pay cash for outright ownership, the chances of me returning are significantly lower than if he got me in a lease. It’s much harder to sell a car to someone off the street than to someone who returns the car when the lease is up. Repeat customers are preferred.
Do what makes you the happiest and don’t let outside influences dictate what you should do.

I’ve owned ford a few times and my first GM.
You can’t go wrong either way.
Had an Explorer which was amazing. Great build quality. Now I have a new Navigstor.
Have an Escalade as well. Reliability during my childhood was awful so I was hesitant, but I could afford to deal with a lemon if it happened. It has not.
Neither vehicle is bulletproof, but both vehicles are designed for the American lifestyle.
Acceleration and power for both vehicles are comparable, one just does it with a turbo.
I hate the auto start stop feature. Moybe wait until ‘27 so the car companies can ax it due to trump?

Oh wow. So 10K likely gets you nothing.
This is why you should get season tickets when the tigers suck. Every upgrade I have ever done was after down years. When times are good, or the hype is nuts, its difficult to score season tickets off the street. There were seasons like after O's downfall years where you could walk in off the street and score South Stadium club seats. Last year was pretty bad as well (demand-wise)
I donated $100 for five years in a row during the high point in the Miles era (06'-11'). Never got a call but I was earning 3 points a year due to being a regular donor. That added up and got me in.
Over the long term, its more financially feasible to get season tickets when the fanbase is fickle, than to wait until a season like this to get tickets.
I would start by donating at least $100 a year to TAF and make that a standard practice. The bonus points will add up over time and get you in the stadium. Give more over time if life gets better for you.
re: WWII Museum visit....all suggestions and real advice welcomed.

It’s incredible. I grew up listening to my grandpa with PTSD (that we did not realize at the time) giving us the third degree on the war. We regarded him as a senile old man similar to Grandpa Simpson. Then the museum opens and I visit and was blown away and finally saw an in depth pov of what he was talking about in a format that is interesting to see, watch, feel, etc.
I visit often but hav not been to the final phase of it.
I would start by watching the movie, especially if you have kids. That sets the tone for the exhibits.
My favorite building is the road to Berlin/tokyo. You will leave that building in tears.
I would start at the original building and go from there.
You won’t see it all in a day.
Eat lunch at the on campus restaurant.
They have an event at night with a show. Never been but I treated a family to it and they loved it.
Stay at the Higgins hotel if you can.
If you can swing the guide I would do it . I never did it but recently I have done stuff like this with other venues and it’s worth every penny

I get excited when I can scrape together an extra $250 to buy 1 more share, then I see stuff like this
Ten years ago I would have said the same thing. Keep at it as everyone has had a journey, but most outsiders only see the end result.
I just pulled the trigger today for $40K more in shares, as my initial $18K investment has more than tripled, and I’m on for the long haul so may as well get more now.
If he is brought on, the other reporters on the show would shift their hit piece stories from Trump to Joe Rogan.
