re: Lane Kiffin to USC
Posted by Memphischick on 1/13/10 at 12:58 am
I was prepared for this to end badly.....albeit 4 or 5 years down the road. We should have seen the signs with the pilfering of other SEC coaches and the constant deference to the weak Pac 10 and USC. But I drank the kool-aid and was very pro Kiffin. This sucks.....
Alabama and Florida....I can't believe I am pandering to you but you are the 2 teams in the very near future that can knock USC on its @ss. Please take care of your SEC brethern....the Volnation does always support the SEC even when it means pulling for our biggest rivals.

I just think its funny to attribute our recruiting success to sleazy recruiting tactics. The secondary violations are unintentional and don't do anything towards getting a recruit to sign at a school. Yes, TN committed the most but my point was that everyone does it (except KY - but they don't count in football anyway).

Monte is paid 1.2 million a year though I believe bonuses can push that to 1.5? Lane's salary is $2MM so he and Monte combined don't equal to Miles, Saban, or Meyer. I think TN ranks 4th or 5th in the SEC in terms of total salary?

Yeah, all of Kiffin's recruiting success can be attributed to the 'oh so sleazy' fog machine violation.
Here is a list of secondary violations reported by SEC schools since January. Schools do not have to make them public which is why you don't see Auburn, Alabama, or Vandy listed.
Tennessee 6
Mississippi 5
LSU 4
Miss State 3
Georgia 3
South Carolina 3
Arkansas 2
Florida 1
Kentucky 0

I am new to TigerDroppings....I do appreciate the pleasantries to a newcomer though I am sure in due time I'll get my fair share of 'Voltard' insults and will be forced to defend Kiffin's record as a head coach (if winning helps him recruit than his win-loss record will be just fine - lol.)
We will be fine on Defense but we were great last year. Monte's reputation will bring in the types of elite players that we need. His energy is crazy. Am I concerned that some of our staff is here just b/c of him? Yes. Tutoring under Monte for a year or two can do wonders to a resume.
Yes - I do feel Bebe can be a good D/C when Monte leaves. He won't be a good head coach. At least not in the SEC...
Offense is a concern...It will take some time to get us back to where UT is used to being. And you can't simply outrecruit in the SEC - you just have to keep up. Different than the early Fulmer era when that is exactly what we did.

You have definitely heard from the UT people on this board gripe about how Chavis and the "Mustang" package. Trust me - you will get frustrated at some point this season.
However, if it hadn't been for Monte, TN would not have parted ways with the Chief. I don't know any college coordinator that could be considered an upgrade over him. Also, he is uber loyal and has no aspirations to be a head coach. This concerns me about the all-star staff that we have put together....there is something to be said about consistency amongst a staff.
Anyway - we just need a QB. Seriously. If Scroggins commits to USC as expected then the Volnation site will have a meltdown much worse than the Janzen Jackson one here.

Chief will do you right - it sure was not our defense that got us in trouble.
Now if only we could sign a freakin' QB!!

Rumors that Nike is behind Selby decommitting and encouraging him to go to a Nike sponsored school. He was a very solid commitment to Tennessee though he has gotten alot of increased exposure with his play in these summer camps.

Thought it was interesting to see how the SEC compared to other conferences in the team rankings.....SEC has 4 teams ranked in the top 10 and 6 teams in the top 25 (almost had 7 teams - Auburn is ranked #26).
No other conference is close to the SEC in terms of recruiting rankings. The Big 12 was the only other conference that had more than one team in the top 10.
SEC rules!

You will love Chief...good hire by LSU. Defense was never our problem at UT (except when we had a lead and he employed the "Mustang" package...scary).
I always root for anyone with a TN connection so I wish for LSU's defense to have a shutout against Alabama and for LSU to use the "Mustang" anytime they play Tennessee.

I don't think so...I mean we have to win some games to get the big time recruits. And that is what our staff has been assembled to do....Recruit baby! Winning is merely a bonus.
Sarcasm aside, TN fans are fired up about the new staff and the hope of returning to the traditional powerhouse that we used to be. We won't be there in a year but I expect better things down the road. We are not big rivals with any SEC West teams other than Bama so LSU and Auburn may be glad for TN to return to form?

I posted my pic but it wasn't because an Alabama fan told me to...LSU asked nicely so I complied. I would never even consider a Bammer's request. I have enjoyed reading this board as its the only one other than TN's that I visit.....

With the type of staff TN hired then we should expect this kind of class. Our staff knows that there will be extra scrutiny on them with all of CLK's antics, a losing record last year, and an unproven product on the field. A huge emphasis on good recruiters has merely paid off sooner than expected and its disappointing that so many go with the cheating angle.

This is the only site I visit other than my own team's....it is the best one IMO (other than ours of course). I have finally felt compelled to stop just trolling and actually post.
I just don't understand the continued discussion of how we allocated our coaches salaries? Lane Kiffin is unproven and should not be paid like the Miles and Sabans. And the coaching tree of Monte Kiffin can be debated but he is more than deserving of his salary.
Revenue from our athletic department funds a huge amount of our academic progarms and UT simply distributed the pool of money differently than most teams. We needed to augment our rookie head coach with good support and paid them accordingly. The allocation will change over time as Lane proves himself and Monte retires. Once our head coach gets paid $3.7 to put him in the same company as Miles and Saban and we no longer need the same level of experienced assistants, then maybe we can stop rehashing our coaches' salaries?
As for Orgeron, LSU countered our offer but I don't believe LSU offered him $900,000. Coach O grew up an LSU fan and that kind of money would have been hard to turn down. But we both wanted the guy and I am glad we got him. He will make recruiting battles more interesting in LA and I look forward to seeing how they play out on this site.
