If you're not willing to factor in the injuries across the oline and then piling up over the course of the season you're just looking for an Excuse to whine and garner attention. The team is now in rebuilding mode and everything else is ancient history

The way I see it, is the Saints have $150 mil. invested
($100 mil.) guaranteed in Carr to operate this offense.
As long as they are not doing anything illegal or immoral this is strictly business.

LB Jaylon Smith
As the new face in the building, assuming he practices, Smith will be the apple of everyone’s eye on Friday. The Saints signed him after a visit with veteran linebacker Anthony Barr did not lead to a contract. Smith's brand of linebacker play is one built upon a foundation of athleticism. While his speed and agility may have taken hits due to injuries throughout his career, he is continuously showing a propensity to play sideline-to-sideline and produce as a coverage linebacker. He has also shown that he can be active as a run defender. Smith's 7.6% regular season missed tackle rating is an impressive career mark thus far.
DT Malcolm Roach
Roach has been off to a fantastic start through training camp after making a decision to return to the team this off-season. He is one of only two remaining defensive tackles from last year‘s roster. Roach was my pick for breakout player of the season going into 2023, and so far he’s lived up to that expectation. He continuously makes plays in the run game and has proven to be disruptive as a pass rusher. Going into this weekend's preseason game against the Chiefs, he will look to impress on a broader stage. Friday's practice has the potential to set him up for that success.
OL James Hurst
Hurst certainly has not escaped attention throughout training camp as it looks like he is potentially pushing starting left guard Andrus Peat for his role. While Peat has been out of practice dealing with injury, Hurst has filled in well. Allen and the rest of the Saints coaching staff do not seem to have any hesitations around Hearst as a starter. Especially considering how much she’s already contributed to the offensive line since joining the team.
While Hearst has nothing to prove at this point, he still has a lot to gain game prep and in-game action. His performance these next few days can be a determining factor and whether or not he goes from preseason Week 1 starter to regular season Week 1 starter.
I believe these are our three most questionable areas going into the season. Zach Baun is great in run support but struggles in pass coverage despite getting a bunch of reps throughout camp. Hoping this is where Jaylon Smith comes in. Roach came on strong in the latter part of last year we desperately need improved run defense.

What the Saints are planning for Alvin Kamara's role in 2023

The future is uncertain for New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara as he anticipates a potential suspension for his arrest in Las Vegas from back in Feb. 2022. But when he does hit the football field in real-game action next, head coach Dennis Allen made clear that he will be more involved in the passing game in a way that is reminiscent of when Drew Brees was still the team’s quarterback.
“My expectation is that we’re gonna be able to utilize him in the passing game much like Drew was able to utilize him. That’s something we’ve put an emphasis on and we’ll continue to work on it.”
Improved depth at running back has lightened the workload expected of Kamara as a runner, and Allen sees the additions of guys like Jamaal Williams and Kendre Miller as something that can help Kamara, too: “We’ve probably been our best offensively when we’ve had a little bit of a running back-by-committee approach.”
How Kamara’s chemistry develops with veteran — but newcomer to the Saints — quarterback Derek Carr will be something to keep an eye on. It’s something Kamara is amped to cultivate. Conversations with Carr, Jameis Winston, offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael and passing-game coordinator Ronald Curry have him feeling upbeat and optimistic.
“DC, Jameis, and Pete, all those guys, RC, they’re all talking about it,” Kamara said. “I think I’m one of the most effective backs in the league when I get the ball in my hands. Out of the backfield, running routes, catching the ball, splitting out to receiver. Doing those things you guys have known me to do. The emphasis this year, going through camp, has been getting back in that grove and splitting out and getting more balls out of the backfield. Getting creative with my pass-catching side has been exciting.”
Kamara caught exactly 81 passes in each of his first three seasons, then set a career-high (83) in 2020, his last year with Brees. His numbers have fallen since then with 47 receptions in 2021 and 57 in 2022, but he and the Saints are optimistic that Carr’s arrival can help him get back to what he does best.

where’s this large and vocal outrage?
I haven’t heard a peep.
And you likely won't hear anything except from the squeaky media.
I read a couple of reports that Gruden spent most of his time talking to Kamara and Carr. Also spent some time with Carmichael. I think the few days Gruden spends here will prove to be time well spent.

After Further Review: Five takes from Saints practice #9

Take one: Heat
Not to be a prisoner of the moment, but Saturday had to be one of the hottest Saints practice I’ve ever covered. The temperatures were unbearable, and the Saints were in full pads. The team went outdoors for the three team periods in front of the fans, who showed up despite the blistering hot day. Not only that, they went red zone which is typically one of the most competitive situations of camp.
Take Two: Banged up black & gold
The bumps and bruises of training camp have hit the Saints. Unfortunately, they lost running back Eno Benjamin to a torn achilles on a non-contact play. With Alvin Kamara’s suspension, Benjamin had a chance to stick on the roster at running back.
The team held out DeMario Davis and Bryan Bresee with calf injuries. Dennis Allen said he doesn’t forsee those two being very serious.
Tre’Quan Smith and Rashid Shaheed both exited practice early with groin injuries.
While this is fairly normal for camp, Allen did say he has to look closely at what he’s doing to try his best to prevent some of the injuries.
Take Three: Carr starts fast
Derek Carr came out on fire in the early 7-on-7 period. He threw four touchdown passes during this stretch including two dimes to Chris Olave and Foster Moreau. When Moreau scored, he did his best Jimmy Graham impersonation and dunked the ball over the cross bar.
In Carr ‘s first team period he connected with Olave on an over route, but Olave had to go down to make the shoestring catch, During the second team session, Carr and Michael Thomas weren’t on the same page on a back shoulder. The chemistry between those two is coming along but not quite there yet.
Take Four: Haener excels in red zone
Another day, another impressive performance from rookie quarterback Jake Haener. This time he looked like a seasoned veteran in red zone. He opened with a dart to Lukas Krull on a back shoulder throw for a touchdown, Krull was held and could only get one hand on the ball to make the catch. On the next play, the pair connected again for a score on a bootleg.
Haener’s next pass got away from him, and Ugo Amadi picked him off. It was his first interception of camp. He didn’t stay down for long, when his reps came around again, he found Lynn Bowden in the end zone for a score.
Take Five: Other Observations
Heaner hit fellow rookie A.T. Perry during the first team period on a busted coverage for a big gain.
Carl Granderson lit up rookie Kendre Miller on a toss play and forced a fumble. Miller had to exit practice with a jaw injury before returning.
Trevor Penning, Cesar Ruiz and Marcus Maye all had scheduled days off.
With Penning out, Landon Young played left tackle with James Hurst at left guard.
Saturday’s work was the first time the newness of training camp and felt like it had worn off for the team. Now, they’re having to battle through this next stretch for their preseason opener.

GENERAL NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS
Blake Grupe went 6-of-7 on the day, missing his long field goal attempt. The first three were prefect, and then the second set had a couple of kicks that were close, but grazed the inside of the uprights. His last long attempt hit the left upright and was no good. Lou Hedley was the holder.
Lou Hedley handled punting duties today. Here's his unofficial times from his kicks: 4.60, 4.44, 4.72, 4.88, 4.53, 4.59, 4.34, 3.97, 4.69, 4.63, 4.66. He has some really nice kicks, especially when it came to inside the 10-yard-line. We continue to have an interesting special teams battle.
Here's what the interior punt team looked like: Ty Summers, D'Marco Jackson, Zach Wood, Adam Prentice, Zack Baun, Foster Moreau, Johnathan Abram, and Taysom Hill. Juwan Johnson also rotated in as the personal protector.
Landon Young has been working at guard, as we've previously reported, but it's only been a development from the last several days of training camp. He said that it's a little bit easier to kick inside and the team is cross-training him there for injuries. He's taken well to Jahri Evans' coaching tips as well, saying that it's a bit easier to understand things after Doug Marrone says it.
Marcus Maye feels pretty comfortable going into this season. He also said that things are coming along with Tyrann Mathieu as well. He hasn't heard from the league yet regarding a potential suspension from his DUI incident from his time with the Jets, but expects to see that handled in the next few weeks.
Clancy Barone made it a point to give Taysom Hill some love during tight end drills after a rep. We don't talk too much about Hill in this spot, but it seems like he's growing in the room.
Marques Colston was out at practice today. Yesterday, Brett Maxie and Rich and Michael Mauti were out here.

TEAM DRILLS BREAKDOWN
TEAM DRILL NO. 1: Carr's first series got started with a short hookup to Michael Thomas. Nathan Shepherd was there for the pressure, and likely would have got a sack on the play. The second play was in and out of the hands of Alvin Kamara over the middle working against D'Marco Jackson. Carr came back from that to hit Taysom Hill on a crossing route that saw Jackson have a nice pop on him after the catch. Jamaal Williams had a short run on the next play, and the series concluded with a Chris Olave completion for an intermediate gain on a crossing route. The throw was a little low, but Olave somehow got it. Marshon Lattimore was in coverage.
Winston tried Michael Thomas on his first rep on a deep slant, but Alontae Taylor had a nice pass breakup on the play. Kirk Merritt had a short run on the next play that was stopped by Nathan Shepherd. Kendre Miller got to the second level on the next handoff inside. Winston completed both of his final passes, a check down to Kirk Merritt in the flats and then a nice gain to Chris Olave on a curl working against Isaac Yiadom.
Taysom Hill came in next, running a zone read to the outside left on his first play. Isaiah Foskey was in pursuit. His lone pass was off the hands of James Washington, as they tried a deep out on the right side with Troy Pride in coverage.
Jake Haener got three reps, hitting both of his passes. Things started with a short run with Ellis Merriweather, and then he hit Lucas Krull on a curl route for a short gain working against Nick Anderson. Haener then found a wide open A.T. Perry down the right sideline, as no one accounted for him in coverage.
TEAM DRILL NO. 2: Carr's second series of work saw him check it down to Kendre Miller to start over the middle. The next play was the one where Miller got hurt after taking a flip to the right side. The hit looked like it caused a fumble, and it was unclear as to who got him. Carr tried a fade route right to Michael Thomas, but the throw was low. He came back with a pass over the middle to Kamara with D'Marco Jackson and Cam Jordan around. His work finished with a swing pass out to the right to Kamara, where Jackson had good coverage on the sideline.
Winston's series was a little rough. The first play resulted in a sack for Tanoh Kpassagnon. Winston ended up trying to throw to James Washington off the left sideline, but it was into double coverage. The next play was a run to Keke Coutee off the right side, with Khalen Saunders and Johnathan Abram in position to make a stop. The next attempt was broken up by Abram in the end zone working against Lucas Krull. Prince Emili and Niko Lalos combined for a sack on Winston to finish the series, and it's worth pointing out that Isaiah Foskey won his rep and was coming.
Taysom Hill got a play next, which was a QB power to the left. Ugo Amadi was in position to get him in the backfield.
Jake Haener started things with a floater to the right side for Jamaal Williams. Kirk Merritt got a toss on the next play that went for a nice gain. Kyle Phillips jumped prematurely before the next play could unravel, but when it did it resulted in a nice run inside with Ellis Merriweather. Haener tried a back shoulder hookup to A.T. Perry working against Anthony Johnson on the next play, but it did not connect. Merriweather closed out the series with an outside run to the left that was stopped by Niko Lalos and Smoke Monday.
TEAM DRILL NO. 3: Most of these had a tough vantage point from where we were at, but we still got these charted in red zone. Carr's first pass was to Kamara in the flats for a short gain. The next play was blown dead after Cam Jordan and Payton Turner were there for a sack. Alvin Kamara was doubled on the play and the Saints had excellent coverage. Cam Jordan provided a pressure on the next play, which was a swing route to the right to Kamara. Jamaal Williams had an inside handoff on the final play.
Jameis Winston started his series with a hookup to Chris Olave over the middle to start. Jamaal Williams tried a rush inside that was blown up by Malcolm Roach for a loss. The next play was blown dead after Tanoh Kpassagnon and Payton Turner provided the pressure to get a sack. The final play was incomplete to Lynn Bowden Jr. in the back left of the end zone.
Jake Haener's first snap resulted in the play of the day. It was a hookup to Lucas Krull on a back shoulder route to the left. Krull was working against J.T. Gray and ended up making a one-handed grab for the score. Haener came back to Krull on the next play on a rollout to the right for another score. However, it wasn't all good for Haener, as he was picked off by Ugo Amadi on the ensuing play while targeting Jimmy Graham. Kirk Merritt helped the offense respond by having a rushing touchdown inside.
Derek Carr got two more snaps, which was a run to Kamara stopped short and a shovel pass to Juwan Johnson for a short gain. Winston then got two reps, as Jamaal Williams rushed for a touchdown and then he hit Foster Moreau for a score in the left end zone after escaping the pocket and scrambling to find him with Johnathan Abram in coverage. Haener also got two reps to close out team, as Ellis Merriweather scored on a run inside to the right, and then his second was an out route to the right that was caught by Lynn Bowden Jr. for a touchdown.

Chris Olave vs. Isaac Yiadom (Carr) - Complete, inside middle slant touchdown.
Shaq Davis vs. Anthony Johnson (Carr) - Complete, inside left touchdown.
James Washington vs. Alontae Taylor (Winston) - Complete, end zone right out touchdown.
A.T. Perry vs. Adrian Frye (Winston) - Complete, slant left to right.

METAIRIE -- The action picked up a good bit on Saturday from Saints training camp, as we saw a little bit of everything. Derek Carr was on a tear in the red zone, while several plays stood out. However, it wasn't all good. Here's our notes and observations from Day 9.
ATTENDANCE
Cesar Ruiz, Andrus Peat, Calvin Throckmorton, and Bryan Bresee were among those not spotted at practice. Ruiz had a rest day. Michael Thomas, James Hurst, and Cam Jordan all returned. We saw Demario Davis for a brief period during stretches. He and Bresee were held out of practice due to calf injuries, and Dennis Allen said after practice that Davis was going to get imaging done on it. On Bresee, Allen said that it is not believed to be serious.
INJURIES PILING UP
Eno Benjamin suffered a ruptured Achilles during the indoor portion of practice, and both Tre'Quan Smith and Rashid Shaheed both left due to groin injuries. Shaheed also had to miss time in minicamp because of a groin issue, so that's not ideal. Kendre Miller got popped on a play that was well over with and had to leave the field. He did return, and Allen said after practice that it was jaw related, possibly TMJ.
TEMPERS FLARE
There were a few instances, whether it was the hit or otherwise, where we saw a few flareups during practice. Issac Yiadom and Chris Olave were doing a good bit of jawing during 1-on-1s, while later in team drills Keke Coutee and Lonnie Johnson Jr. got into it some following the play. However, cooler heads prevailed. The final instance involved Tommy Kraemer and Malcolm Roach. Roach got his helmet knocked off in a rep and took exception to it, throwing a nice open-handed swing after things were over with.
STARTING LOOKS
The offense rolled with an offensive line of Landon Young, James Hurst, Erik McCoy, Max Garcia and Storm Norton. The second grouping had Lewis Kidd, Nick Saldiveri, Alex Pihlstrom, Mark Evans II, and Koda Martin.
Defensively, New Orleans had a line of Cam Jordan, Nathan Shepherd, Khalen Saunders, and Payton Turner. D'Marco Jackson, Pete Werner, and Zack Baun were at linebacker with Marshon Lattimore and Paulson Adebo on the outside. Jordan Howden got first-team reps with Tyrann Mathieu.
DEREK CARR RESPONDS IN A BIG WAY
Derek Carr didn't have the best of days on Friday, but he was outstanding on Saturday during red zone drills. He went 6-of-6 during 7-on-7 and had four touchdowns (more on that shortly). Carr also hit some big connections in 1-on-1 drills. He was dealing most all of the day, which was a welcomed sight.
RED ZONE WORK AND QB BREAKDOWN
Here's all the details indoors from how things looked inside the red zone.

10-yard-line: Complete, short crosser over the middle to Krik Merritt with Ryan Connelly and Ty Summers in coverage.
Jake Haener (1/2)
8-yard-line: Incomplete, middle of the field intended for Lucas Krull. Credit Anthony Johnson with a pass breakup.
5-yard-line: Complete, fade route right hookup to A.T. Perry against Adrian Frye. Perry did a great job jumping up to get the pass.

Bryan Bresee misses practice with calf injury, Dennis Allen downplays severity
LINK
Injuries are starting to pile up for the New Orleans Saints, but head coach Dennis Allen isn’t panicking. The team’s rookie first-round draft pick Bryan Bresee missed practice on Saturday, Aug. 5, but Allen made a point to downplay the severity of what he’s dealing with.
“We held Bryan Bresee out with a calf injury, doesn’t seem like that’s going to anything of significance,” Allen said, continuing, “We also held out Demario Davis, he went over for some imaging on his calf. I don’t believe any of these to be serious but they are soft-tissue injuries.”
Allen added that wide receivers Rashid Shaheed and Tre’Quan Smith left practice with groin issues, while rookie running back Kendre Miller had to briefly step out of practice with a minor jaw injury. The only serious injury is what the Saints believe to be a ruptured Achilles tendon for veteran running back Eno Benjamin, likely ending his season.
Preventing and treating soft-tissue injuries like these has been a point of emphasis for the Saints since Allen was promoted to head coach; one of his first personnel moves was to change up the team’s training staff, hiring Matt Rhea away from Alabama as his new sports science director, overseeing the strength and conditioning program. That helped the Saints avoid many such injuries last season, with fewer torn tendons and more broken bones or bruised internal organs, but at the end of the day there’s only so much that can be done in a violent sport like pro football.
Hopefully Bresee can return to practice soon. He needs all the reps he can get after injuries derailed his time at Clemson. Durability was the concern when the Saints drafted him. Bresee’s college career started with a 2020 knee sprain, then a torn ACL in 2021. When he returned in 2022 he started the season with a serious case of strep throat that led to a kidney infection and hospitalization. In total, he played 912 defensive snaps in 25 games at the college level, or about 36.5 each week. The Saints are asking him to shoulder a heavy load — David Onyemata, the player Bresee is replacing, averaged 40 snaps per game last year alone.

Like last year Penning will probably start and learn on the job. I would guess that Hurst gets the starting nod and Peat would have to stay healthy and earn it back. Good luck with that.
