I disagree - I think the the line of scrimmage, the down, is what made football into not-Rugby at least. that was the fundamental change, the idea that one team would have undisputed possession of the ball. It was certainly not modern football until the forward pass became leagl - but it was definitely not rugby starting in 1882 with the invention of the down.
I believe the biggest change since 1914 is the 2 point conversion, introduced I think to start the 1958 season. (LSU's champ year)
It would be interesting to see an exhibition game played under an older set of rules.

I got tossed in the first game of the Saban era for tossing a miniature football back and forth with another dude two rows down. (Gasp!)
