The rankings are not based on how the teams would do in head to head competition, but how the teams performed relative to the then existing competition. If TSN ranked offensive units, LSU would be number 1. The 2019 defense was good and peaked at the right time, but not necessarily the best.

Those are all solid. 2001 team was a real force after the Ole Miss game. The offense was hitting on all cylinders and was tough to stop.
Imagine if our forefathers had this temptation. We'd be eating baked beans for breakfast.
