re: Amazon Prime Shipping Issue

Did anyone watch the news video? Flex drivers? Random people in personal vehicles. Looked like they were just loading up on free stuff and driving off. Not to mention the pallets sitting out in the weather.

Just to be clear, you are saying the Louisiana Student Standards Scooe and Sequence that was just released is outdated and not a roadmap for instruction?
Also, I consider myself among the few teachers out there who actually think for themselves and try to find multiple sources to offer students a spectrum of perspectives to help inform their learning and decision making.
What do you think the vast majority of teachers who do not or will not put in the work are going to give their students when it comes time? I’ll answer that. The sources offered in the scope and sequence.
At any rate, my point in posting this was to hear what people thought about the summaries that are clearly slanted in favor of one religion. If students hear nothing else, they will leave this activity believing that Christians would like to suppress and/or oppress people of other religions while Muslims would simply tip their hat and say welcome brothers. This is clearly not the case.

You sound like public education is not a matter for the public.

It is the LADOE. You weren’t aware the state had an education department?

In years past there was never any confusion as the schism between west and east had already been covered. Keep in mind that these are 6th graders. They probably won't remember any of this with great detail after they leave the class. I am only concerned that they will read this article and leave with the overall impression that Christians are mean, intolerant people who force their religion on everyone while Islam is peaceful and just accepts everyone and whatever they believe. Life is not that clear cut and there are too many examples to the contrary for that to be a fair assessment.

This is not a textbook issue. There is no textbook used here. If I were to consult the classroom textbook, which I rarely do, Islam is not brought in until the African civilizations after the unit on Rome. The state has chosen to place the overview of these religions here during Rome. I know that Christianity is well placed here. I think the state was looking to simply knock all of this out in one activity.

The activity is suggested by the state in their new Scope and Sequence for social studies 6th grade. Basically, an overview of what students should know and be able to do in order to pass the LEAP 2025 test in the Spring. Any teacher may, if they clear it with their district or school, change these sources and activities up. For our purposes here in the Political Board, I was using the snow day to get ahead and check out what the state is suggesting for the next unit. Was curious if anyone else thought this was a very one sided take on these religions.

So, I am a teacher. I am about to begin teaching a unit on Ancient Rome which, according to the new state scope and sequence, also introduces Christianity and Islam to the students. Judaism is introduced in an earlier unit during River Valley civilizations.
The activity given asks students to read this article from PBS: Three Religions, One God and then complete a chart comparing the religions. I have no problem with this activity. Here is my question:
How do you feel about these specific sections of the article? Each one ends with a how this religion feels about the other religions section.
Judaism:
Christianity:
Islam:
Basically, Christians have been violent and intolerant. Jews just don't recognize the others. Islam is tolerant and accepts them both peacefully. Just doesn't add up to me.

Judaism:
quote:
Jews do not believe in the prophets after the Jewish prophets, including Jesus and Muhammad. Therefore, they do not subscribe to the idea that Jesus was the Messiah and the son of God, nor do they believe in the teachings of Islam.
Christianity:
quote:
Although Christianity developed out of Judaic texts, Christians do not follow Jewish law. Instead, they believe that the ritualistic Jewish law was abrogated in favor of a universal gospel for all of humanity and the Christian teaching, "Love thy neighbor as thyself." Relationships between Jewish and Christian communities have often been difficult, particularly in Christian Europe. There, Jewish communities were often subject to discrimination and violence at the hands of Christians. Christianity has also had a problematic relationship with Islam. Christians do not accept Muhammad as a prophet. While many Christians in the Middle East converted to Islam during and after the seventh century, the Church hierarchy in Rome and Constantinople considered Islam to be both a political and theological threat. The Crusades were an unsuccessful attempt to reverse the Islamic conquest of the eastern Mediterranean and the holy places of all three monotheistic religions.
Islam:
quote:
Islam sees Judaism and Christianity as earlier versions of Islam, revelations given within the same tradition by Allah but misunderstood over time by their followers. Muslims see Islam as the final, complete, and correct revelation in the monotheistic tradition of the three faiths. The Islamic tradition recognizes many of the Jewish and Christian prophets, including Abraham, Moses, and Jesus (although he is not considered to be the son of God). Many non-Muslims mistakenly believe that Muhammad is the equivalent of Jesus in the Islamic tradition; in fact, it is the Quran that stands in the same central position in Islam as Jesus does in Christianity. Muhammad himself is not divine, but a prophet chosen by God to deliver his message and an example of piety to emulate. Jews and Christians are specifically protected in the Quran as Peoples of the Book, reinforcing their spiritual connection to Islam by virtue of having been given revelations from God. The Islamic legal tradition has upheld the rights of Jews and Christians to maintain their beliefs and practices within their communities in Islamic lands, and this policy of tolerance has generally been upheld.
Basically, Christians have been violent and intolerant. Jews just don't recognize the others. Islam is tolerant and accepts them both peacefully. Just doesn't add up to me.
