I like how somehow being mentally not there absolves you from the heinous act you committed. Not fit to go on trial and be punished, but fit enough to be a member of society and to take part in society and then commit an egregious crime.

Fixer Upper used to do the same thing. Some of the houses they flipped were in bad areas, but they strategically didn't show too much of that. Sometimes, there was no way to avoid the unsightly surrounding buildings.
